Well, you are right about the "explained" part.
In Evangelion, you literally get told to your face: This character is sad because of reasons x,y, and z.
In Madoka, you have simultaneously existing ambivalent narratives that are only ever implied by subtext and metaphors.
It is only natural that low IQ plebs won't get it and will, therefore, prefer lesser anime - like Evangelion - over it.
