Samurai 8 Chapter 18 is out, and there's a tournament arc

Those two are amusing and there's obviously some development waiting for the guy with memory issues. Didn't expect a tournament arc, but I'm willing to see how it turns out. I wish they'd go a bit more for showing off the feeling of traveling new sites, as both Ann (probably) as well as Hachimaru have never been off-world. Giving the station a name, having a little speech about keeping your guard up, that sort of thing. Feels a bit convenient, that the guy sponsoring the tournament happens to be a (rumored) key-samurai, then again, I still have no clear idea whether Hachi's "gravity pull" is also supposed to influence probabilities to run into situations like this.

Not really, its supposed to be a more mature look because he's no longer going to act like a brat to everyone.

Depends on the circumstances. As long as there's a reason for the MC to change clothes(e.g. changing from country bumpkin clothing to something more practical and befitting a traveling samurai) it's fine.

I don't know if it's because of being 24 or because I have grown tired of all these Shounen tropes that keep happening over and over and over and over again but I just can't like new Shonen Jump Manga. I think Samurai 8 tries some new things here and there so it doesn't become stale like current Shonen Manga but the spark just isn't there. I was really looking forward to this but now im mostly speedreading. Anyway, at the very least I like how the main group is just the cat, Hachi, and Ann, and the plot of going looking for companions to defeat the final boss reminds me of Avatar

It could be that you're getting older for them, what was the last WSJ manga (assuming you follow other series from the mag) you liked? I'm 29 and still enjoy battle shounen in general but couldn't get into Samu8 either

Hmm, I think it was The ComiQ by Takahashi but it was a short Manga so I guess the last true long-running series I read there was Naruto. Currently, im also following DB Super and Boruto but just for nostalgia reasons so I just check some pages of every new chapter and nothing else.

If you feel a bit burned out on the genre, I'd suggest taking a break from it and seeking out other genres altogether, if you're not doing that already. For me, the spark usually comes back after a while, or at the very least, you'll have more chapters to read in one go. I find it easier to get invested in a new series when I have a few volumes to read in bulk, so I can get invested in characters and main story, without the need to wait on a weekly basis for things to take off or wait for it to prove that it can survive.

Its really popular on leddit. They compare it to Naruto all the time and say how cool a crossover will be in the future.

I'm not really eager for a crossover, but the thought of one of those planets in S8 being Naruto's world amuses me. All those ninja on Narutoworld jumping around in trees thinking they're hot shit, while planetbusters roam the rest of the galaxy in nigh immortal cyborg bodies.

Those 2 new characters are fun, and I'm glad Daruma at least got something of a personality after being the exposition cat for 17 chapters.
Tournament arc feels like a desperate attempt to gain some momentum, introduce characters and some flashy fights, maybe it'll work.
