Did eating mushrooms to get magic powers in battle actually happen in real history?
Vinland Saga
No, they usually got the magic powers by human sacrifice.
Yeah nordic people did ingest psychedelic mushrooms before battle to increase their spirit etc. Not the one on the picture tho, it is called amanita muscaria and it was used mostly for rituals/religious purposes. It has much different effects than regular magic mushrooms. Read up on it it's pretty interesting.
Even from a non-spiritual perspective, getting high as shit has use if you just wanna fling a bunch of violent and crazy motherfuckers who get a boner from pain at your enemy.
Have you never cracked an ancient European history book? This was a common enough phenomena for pop history to have made hours of specials about.
it still happens user

>The notion that Vikings used A. muscaria to produce their berserker rages was first suggested by the Swedish professor Samuel Ödmann in 1784.[92] Ödmann based his theories on reports about the use of fly agaric among Siberian shamans. The notion has become widespread since the 19th century, but no contemporary sources mention this use or anything similar in their description of berserkers. Muscimol is generally a mild relaxant, but it can create a range of different reactions within a group of people.[93] It is possible that it could make a person angry, or cause them to be "very jolly or sad, jump about, dance, sing or give way to great fright".[93]
Based.
