i think the whole series has that appeal that so many others lack today. characters had a little more motivation to be more than a cardboard cutout. the VAs did the best with what they had to work with. Slayers Novel Confirmed to Return with Its Third Arc
It was officially announced in the latest July 2019 issue of KADOKAWA'S Dragon Magazine released today on May 17 that the long-awaited third arc of Hajime Kanzaka's internationally popular fantasy light novel series Slayers is set to launch in near future.

In our discussion last week, we came to the conclusion that it's upscaled to 1080i, which is fine because the original aspect ratio was 1.33:1 in the first place. It has a proper bitrate (MPEG-4 AVC 34.57 Mbps) so it should still maintain proper standard definition detail without stretching or compression, and since the official DVDs used a fan's custom filter for their official release, the BDs should have much better color, contrast, grain, and texture.
The problem is that we don't have any screenshots from the BDs, so we can't tell if it's good or not.

You can find them in the light novels, which is a separate continuity from the anime, and what is considered "core" because it's written by Hajime himself.
If you don't have access to the specific light novel repository that requires an interview, you can find light novels here. You'll need a reader, though, but that's a free download. I recommend only Volumes 1-9 with this, because Vol.10+ is horribly fan-translated. Vol.1-8 are official translations, and Vol.9 is a solid fan translation.
After that, I recommend using:

Well there's that but to be perfectly frank I think a Slayers adventure really works best short form. I like Lina but she's kind of hard to put up with if you really sit down and watch a lot of episode. Naga's are usually quick done in one OVAs or a short movie. They bicker, have some bants there's magic explosions, the end. Fun times.

Ruin Explorers has always been one of my favorites. Fun tid bit. In the dub the actress who plays Rasha (The blond lady who's not a cat) also plays Naga. On the commentary track she mentioned that when she was cast as Naga to basically just play Rasha but MORE.
Anyways it's a fun 4 episode OVA that I always like to rewatch for a quick fantasy fix.

Yes. Lodoss was pretty much my, and many others, gate way fantasy anime. And is still one of my favorites. Hell Im even one of the weirdos who would recommend the TV series too.
The first book was actually translated a year or two back and it was an interesting read. Doesn't look like 7seas is inters in doing the others though which is a sham. Highly recommend the anime. In fact it's basically required viewing.

You can tell it's hand-drawn, not with a tablet, and with everyone on-model and over 200 pages worth of content over three years, done back at the turn of the millennium before crowdfunding was done, it's a monumental undertaking in one's free-time. I believe the canon intelligence ratings are Gourry -> Lina -> Amelia -> Zel, but with Gourry being an idiot-savant who can't remember names, faces, or places, but can easily perceive things in the middle of combat, be aware of his surroundings within a 30-yard radius at all times, and immediately knew that Xellos was a Mazoku while it took everyone else numerous conversations to pick up on it.

This is correct. Gourry was introduced in the novels as a means of giving Lina a way to explain the world's lore, but she could follow-up her statements with internal dialogue. Since a monologue like that wouldn't work within the medium, Gourry devolved into the character he is now within the anime. However, you can see that the writers who worked on it started taking extra care later on to not let him be stuck permanently as that caricature.
