Because he is unable to. By now you should have realized that Ikuhara's scope of interests in extremely limited. Kinda unfortunate that he's about as knowledgable about the topic he addresses a community college dropout, but there's not much we can do about that.

He has an overarching thematic goal as an artist. That's how most great creators are. No one claims that Dostoyevsky is a hack because all of his books deal with existential angst. It doesn't make him limited, it's a strength for an artist to be focused.

When Kazuki's mom got pregnant with him, she was really young and her husband (Kazuki's dad) was killed in an accident, so she wasn't confident in her ability to be a parent and gave up Kazuki; Kazuki was adopted by his aunt and uncle (Haruka's parents). The uncle is the brother of either Kazuki's mother or father.

kazuki backstory definetly is the weakest part of the anime, really doesn´t help that he acts like idiot all the time

All of his shows are pretty nuanced though, ESPECIALLY Utena. Half of Utena's gender commentary is how shit girls are and the circumstances which lead them to have the particularly feminine kind of crazy that they have.

It's not weak, it's natural for someone who was adopted question his origins, he decided to not go further and was going to see his mother one last time. What he feels is guilty about is because he decided to see her just once more, and because of that he believes Haruka is now a cripple. Wait until next episode.

This show is the opposite of pretentious. It's so straightforward it gets boring. And the guy likes gay shit, why would he change that? It's not like he hasn't done heterosexual/bi characters either.

I actually like how Kazuki's adoption story is handled. He spends a certain amount of time feeling insecure about what his "real" family is, like a kid likely would--especially after his grandfather laid the news on him the way he did--but Kazuki comes to the conclusion after meeting his mom that the family he's always known is the one that's precious to him. Blaming himself for Haruka's injury shakes his resolve, but he's going to get it back.

The adoption stuff was pretty acceptable, but truck-kun sure got tiring in anime. I cringed a little on the scene, as much as I wish I didn't.

How a wedge of guilt was driven into Kazuki and Haruka's connection doesn't matter so much as showing how it affects both boys and how they overcome it. Relationships get fucked up in real life to the same effect--where one person can't cope with a feeling despite the other person's attempt to help--all the time, and it doesn't bother me that Ikuhara is painting that picture with a cliche (but probable) series of events. It wouldn't improve the quality of the story for me if instead Kazuki left Haruka behind, Haruka got lost until dark, then ended up falling into a riverbank or something to sustain the same crippling injuries.

How is Sarazanmai compared to past Ikuhara stuff? Everything I've read so far makes it sound pretty boring and not fun like his older works.

I've found the show entertaining so far. It's easily better than YKA which was a decent show at worst.

Disagree, penguindrum got worse in the second half and felt almost aimless, same with Utena to a certain degree. Ikuni shows always lose focus in the second half and that's partly because he's given too many episodes to work with. Hopefully with 11 episodes he can't go too off plot.
