Why doesn't Ikuhara try something truly challenging for his next masterwork:

Something that isn't super gay or pretentious as fuck?

Terrible bait. I don't know why I'm responding to it other than to satiate my craving for an Ikuhara thread.

Because he is unable to. By now you should have realized that Ikuhara's scope of interests in extremely limited. Kinda unfortunate that he's about as knowledgable about the topic he addresses a community college dropout, but there's not much we can do about that.

He has an overarching thematic goal as an artist. That's how most great creators are. No one claims that Dostoyevsky is a hack because all of his books deal with existential angst. It doesn't make him limited, it's a strength for an artist to be focused.

What?
Sarazanmai is literally his most straightforward show

Have a cute Ikuhara

On a scale from Utena to Yuri Kuma Arashi, how openly gay Sarazanmai is?

You mean his next work needs to be gayer, with no shotas but just jocks and twinks and bara guys and some metaphorical weird shit.

Gayer than Utena the tv show, as gay as Utena movie and Gay Kuma.

It can be a strength when the artist has a strong grasp on the issues the topic deals with, something Ikuhara doesn't. Everysingle one of his works is nothing but college dropout twitter shit. There's nothing worthwhile to be gathered, no valuable commentary to be found. It's on the level of a menstruation documentary.
