IIRC there is no real criteria as to who gets chosen. In the ending, most characters are either dead or have suicided. Shiina and the other girl end the world while making out or something after getting pregnant

As what i read, it ended much like Evangelion in the sense that everyone except the main girl dies and after that she makes her child and a kid who looked like her boyfriend rebuild the world.

Gundam 0079, Zeta, ZZ, and CCA have a lot of strengths but their age shows. I think all of them could use a reboot in a more episodic nature. It would also give an excuse for bandai to sell surplus gunpla from the older shows.
