I'd add that magecraft as an academic discipline has a more plausible coexistence with our world than supernatural abilities in other franchises. For me it's the relationship between Shirou and Saber, and Shirou and Archer (5th). It's a fascinating story with some time travel nonsense and romance. I like the idea of him meeting Arturia again only after living a long noble life.

How? She's perfect and I got to play the novel because it was brought by a shady vendor in my nigga country. I initially liked Saber with Sakura in second spot, but after playing Heaven's Feel found just how good of a character she was and loved how she was moved from the clichéd action heroine stop towards becoming the antagonist that Shirou wanted to save.

I loved to watch Shirou breaking himself more and more as he tried to keep Sakura alive and happy. Normal End is still one of my favorite endings in the whole franchise and probably gave me my current despair fetish.

After that I moved to other works like Madoka and Psycho Pass but Heaven's Feel Normal End has always been one of my favorite works ever.

I also love the new white dress they gave her as part of the movie. It really accentuates her features and makes a nice contrast between the purity she seeks and the corruption that stains her body and soul (and gotta add, Shirou's new jacket makes him more stylish and badass too, a definite improvement).

I’ve always been facinated by the idea of origins in the fate universe and how most everyday people are unconsciously guided by them. And once awakened to their origin it’s near impossible to deviate from its influence. Sakurafag here Kirei is probably on the safer side because you're meant to watch Zero first for the anime adaptations, but I sure hope we get his flashback during the woods and his long talk before he and Shirou battle to the death. Kirei's important scenes happen in day 15 and 14 so I don't think what's skipped of him was all too important, hopefully they deliver on that in the next movie since they have 2 hours for 3 days.

Shirou and Illya should get some scenes together, but given what's left, unless they add some anime only scene with them together on the night after she's rescued it's unlikely. At least I hope they can establish how clear Illya is for Shirou, but it's a shame it won't feel as natural due to the lack of screentime they got together, though I think Sudou did a good job at making her feel more present than she actually was in the second movie. Zouken might get his death scene since it also serves as Illya's arrival, and the audience will probably be expected to fill in the gaps, but I don't think it's as crucial to make him justice.

Given the short runtime these movies got, I'm glad they focused on Sakura, since I prefer that over focus on pretty much the rest of the cast, but it's a shame Illya lost so much screentime due to that.

Besides the various references to mythological and historical figures, I enjoy the artwork; the confrontation with Gilgamesh at the end of the original show; Heaven's Feel Part 1 (I am waiting on the English dub for part 2); and the amusing fact that it started with a porno game.

I'm kinda interested in some of the Arthurian lore fate is using, specifically revolving around Kay for a few reasons.
First is mythology wise, lot of stories about Kay ended up being striped away as more where added to Arthurian legends such that things like his magical powers, his wife and kids, even his own death ended up being in a way not canon by the time Chrétien de Troyes came along. Iirc it was stated once before that Le Morte d'Arthur is the version of Arthurian legend fate is mainly based of off, however it is hinted through some tidbits that he has some of of his bullshit powers that are only present in welsh telling.
Second is Kay is starting to have a habit of showing up the oddest places, the first was in a special drama CD that came with UBW where he had a quick conversation with shirou and the second was in case files (kinda) in the from of Add. iirc nasu still has a heavy hand in writing when it comes to any of the knights of the round table, and combined that with some speculation that he's not gonna show up in the Camelot LB, makes me wonder if nasu is planning something (for once).

So from my understanding, the grail collects the souls of the servants in order to work its magic but is corrupt hence black goop, and the rest. Curses seem fair game when you've just introduced a geas, and you have a powerful spirit being sent to the grail in a fit of rage as he curses his master and those responsible for his death.

Worlds where humanity stagnates or fails are thrown out and Human Order makes sure we're always moving forward. Waver and the entire concept of Modern Magecraft is presented as a credible alternative to the other traditionalist Clock Tower departments.

On the other hand, everything else about the setting screams that everything is regressing and getting less awesome with time. A strong theme that runs through the entire Nasuverse is that older things are stronger and more mysterious (Gilgamesh slices through Caliburn like butter with Gram), Further, modern humanity has only a fraction of the power and value of old humanity. That's part of why Gilgamesh wanted to exterminate most of humanity with Angry Manjew, the FGO protagonist can't even survive in ancient Uruk without Leonardo's magical scarf and a single slave of Uruk has more value than 99% of freeborn modern humans. Medea can pull off feats close to True Magic and cast spells on the scale of grand rituals simply by speaking a single word. There used to be virtually no Heroic Spirits dating from past about 1800, and even now that they've lifted the restriction for gachabucks those are still extremely rare. In Notes and in Extra and in Miyu's world, the planet and humanity are basically fucked.

Just the basic themes of heroism study; what values were products of their times and which ones are inarguably essential? Some roguish, individualistic "villains" of myth and history might appear more appealing by today's standards than heroes who fought for the stability of society/the glory of their "lords" or to get ahead in the social hierarchy of their civilisations.

Case in point, while they don't look like much by themselves, I really like the franchise's designs for Arjuna and Karna when you put them side by side because to a layman, it's nigh-impossible to ascertain which of the two is the "bad guy" by sight alone. (Karna's clad in black and covered in spikes, but he has beautiful blue eyes and a fluffy mantle; Arjuna looks superficially less threatening, but he looks like such a grouch and the blank minimalism of his outfit is chillingly eerie)

Fully agree with you about Karna and Arjuna part. Their designs (especially the color scheme) are extremely amazing. If Pakozerker in LB4 is other version of Arjuna (Krishna?) then i hope we will get Karna Archer/Alter/whatever it is called too (the one with red hair)

I see more as a transition period rather than decaying. Yes things were magical and cool in times past but the world specifically created all the measures it did to ensure we wouldn't outlive it because we had the potential to. In Notes what fucks over "humanity" more than anything is that they haven't gotten out of dodge to avoid the TYPES. Even then some like AE were able to fight against some of the most powerful beings in the setting. So while things were cool back in the day the people still relied on the world and its magic to do shit, while modern humanity can set a course to leave our bitch of a planet. Though its just a possibility since those works you brought up don't paint a super hopeful world.

Power in modern humanity is just mode diluted. Sure, ancient Babylonians were basically ubermensch compared to modern man, but they accomplished everything via the insane amounts of mana that was everywhere. Modern humans accomplish similar feats via technology and group effort as ancient humans accomplished via singular heroics and magic.

Kinda supports my theory that the climax between Sakura and Rin in HF is such a mess mostly because of lack of time. The true end epilogue is also pretty bland.

magecraft system and mage's association, especially atlas institute. their mantra, inventions, members, superweapon,...are all interesting and play a big role in lots of typemoon works. atlas's uniform design is nice too (in both fgo, extraverse and melty blood)

Nasuverse is pretty heavily influenced by Buddhist ideas. Along with those comes the cyclic nature of existence. Destruction and creation. A consequence of that, in Nasuverse, is that things degrade over time. The older things get, closer they are to their pure forms as it came out of Akasha, the Root. Hence, older things are stronger.

But while everything degrades, there's no path but to go forward. It would be pointless to stay in the original form forever. Pointless and impossible. Those forms are already lost, for a reason. What comes afterwards, instead of wasting time trying to go back to the pure but ultimately a form that won't last, it's encouraged to keep moving forward. While things may not be as mythical strong as in past, they can still get technologically greater. So instead of dwelling on a good past, work to better your current self, so there is a better future.
