Why are Japanese writers so weak when it comes to worldbuilding?

No they're not.

>watch advertisements for some cheap fiction
>read stories for children
I wonder why most of the stuff you consume is so shallow. I wonder if it's because it's all from Japan.

*is in a well-built world*

Attached: estelle smug.png (217x250, 82K)

apparently two nukes aren't enough to learn some good world building

> Japan Literally creates the greatest world in the history fiction
Kill yourself uncultured faggot

>Why are Japanese writers [generalization]
Get a higher powerlevel. This is the answer ot every one one of these questions.

Yes, exceptions exist
>Made in Abyss
>Ghost in the Shell
>Attack on Titan
>Blame!
>Psycho Pass
But on average I'd say they cannot compete with the kind of stuff you see in western literature.

Pokemon alone is better then any other western piece of media combined in terms of worldbuilding

Well if you're talking about on average do you know how many fucking trashy western fantasy stories exist as well?

Did you just compare cartoons with actual literature?

OK OP, you're a fag.

Attached: Aruruu.jpg (1280x800, 261K)

Lol, no it fucking is not. Pokemon makes zero logical sense when examined just slightly. Even when you were a child you could've probably noticed a lot of the inconsistencies, unexplained stuff, and general stupidness. If Pokemon has such great world building, then why are there only 2 houses in the first town? Why is Pokemon research so lacking? Why are there real-life events and places referenced in this fictional world? And the list goes on to a million other things. I don't care if you find the world of Pokemon fun or interesting, but it doesn't have good worldbuilding, you fucking lunatic.

Yes it does, there literally isn't a single world more iconic then Pokemon. The world building was so good that it created a 100 billion dollar juggernaut. The concept of being a Pokemon trainer alone ended up leading to Pokemon Go taking over the entire world

Based and redpilled, also maybe an education because OP is clearly stupid.

The world is not iconic, it's the creatures and merchandise that are photogenic and marketable.

user, Pokemon sells isn't because of the world building

Because they're fucking teenagers. Publishers like Kadokawa recruit young writers with no families to support, so they can get away with taking a bigger cut.

>Yes it does, there literally isn't a single world more iconic then Pokemon
The fuck does that even mean?

>The world building was so good that it created a 100 billion dollar juggernaut
It becoming a "100 billion dollar juggernaut" had nothing to do with the quality of the worldbuilding. The world that was created was interesting for sure but well thought out it was not.

>The concept of being a Pokemon trainer alone ended up leading to Pokemon Go taking over the entire world
You do realize that ONE concept alone does not make for a well-built world, right? For something with countless games, merch and anime series, you actually don't know shit about the actual world that Pokemon takes place in other than "there are Pokemon and Pokemon-related facilities" in it.

Japanese writers are terrible. I know this because I watch bottom-of-the-barrel anime which is the only fiction Japan produces.

Pseudo-intellectuals begone

Take those childhood goggles off.

That's like asking, "why do bad movies get made?"

Think of it this way, how many really bad formulaic television shows are there? A lot right? I'd even go as far as saying that most television prime time dramas suck total ass.

The writing is predictable & boring, the subject matter is always too safe & cliche'd, you know no one important is going to die so there is no tension, etc. If you were foreign & the only thing you ever consumed from America were those shows, you'd probably assume that we couldn't write either. BUT... since you've grown up consuming lots of different media, it's easy to write off the bad stuff (no pun intended) as just being bad, because you've seen the good stuff and know it exist.

What makes you think it isn't exactly the same for people in Japan?

Attached: 1482674820166.png (726x660, 295K)

Most western works also have awful world building. And you don't even need to look at Yea Forums shit where it's so bad they have to crash and restart their entire world ever few years. Any average fantasy YA novel will show you how low the standard is.

>The world is not iconic
Lavender town called

Japs suffer from tropes-paralysis, more so than Western writers. They love beating a trope into the ground until it becomes stale. Innovation only happens accidently.

Because they're there to tell you a story, not present to you their autistic complete fictional universe for you to yiff-insert into.

the entirety of the Nasuverse blocks your path and sends you to another timeline where we don't have to deal with your massive faggotry

Attached: cp.jpg (1200x675, 238K)

>user consumes pop culture from a foreing country aimed at the lowest common denominator
>hey guise why are writers from this country so shit
Its like if I only read western young adult novels and concluded that all western writers are shit

pls be ironic.

Why are you retards replying to this obvious bait?

how is stating fact baiting?

>average anime can't compete with War and Peace
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

Except Blame's dyson sphere was on a whole fucking other level that this picture.

Honestly, the girls were the main draw. The world is a lot less interesting when you're not self inserting as Trainer Chad pounding pokegirl puss in the wilderness.

I read a lot of books and there are plenty of mango and anime with better worldbuilding and just as many books with better worldbuilding than mango and anime.

Attached: 1531783249751.png (1206x1080, 1.4M)

Because the example you're looking at (anime) is usually 12-24 episodes long as opposed to games. (I'm assuming you're example is game as Half Life 3's supposed dyson sphere leak is the only thing I can think of with a fucking dyson sphere)

There's just not enough of exploring on the depth that warrants hardcore worldbuilding for such a small span of episodes. You need to walk around a whole game world and interact with just about every npc and place you cross. Long shit is usually shonen, most of which is being published for kids. You can't get into the specifics of what would really be happening in a world full of pirates like One Piece. Sure you can name every fucking location and make a whole slew of spin off novels that characterize every named nigger random character that shows up in the main series.

But there's just no point. There's no table top game you need to sell expansions for. There's not 300,000,000 acres of gameworld you have to build and load with shit from people to explore. There's no expanded universe that has to be able to account and accommodate for several different runs by 24 authors working within the same canon at once. 24 episode anime doesn't need fucking 4 dungeons and dragons handbooks worth of shit to get through a simple coming of age story about a kid with a magic sword or some shit

It's an obnoxious amount of needless information that's only going to be read by wiki divers

Attached: last exile grand stream.png (840x2017, 3.64M)

>Half Life 3's supposed dyson sphere leak is the only thing I can think of with a fucking dyson sphere
Is this nigga serious?

if you take lit targeted to the same audience (that is children and teens) the amount of shit books and novels is comparable and its quite high, most of the western teen books are revolving around a love triangle with a heroine and 2 guys, there is always some shitty romance and copy paste world
same in manga and anime, harem, op character, game mechanics
there are ofc exceptions like many people already said here and its fine

Why is there a light source outside the dyson sphere? That picture is fucking trash.

Watch more anime

What this was fucking bad

Attached: 1472528555243.jpg (5253x2205, 1.88M)

Yeah, but the worldbuilding is still shit.

One Piece was the best world building of any piece of fiction, period.

The Nasuverse pretends to have consistent rules, but doesn't. It's too dependant on OP hax servant/vampire/magician powers that either explicitly break the rules or are 'perfect weapons' or 'perfect defenses'

>western literature
Please, stop with this meme. Most of Western fiction is people copying the exact same settings over and over.
Western authors add things because they are in or cool and don't bother the slighest if it actually fits with the world.

>then why are there only 2 houses in the first town?
Are you serious? You can't be this retarded. Games are an interactive medium, they need to limit with what you can interact. The two houses are a representation of a small town.

They only work in the Japanese video game industry

There are tons of anime/manga with great worldbuilding.

Shitfest isekai flood just lowers the average so much it seems shit.

Attached: 1432529953885.png (792x540, 398K)

>Western authors add things because they are in or cool and don't bother the slighest if it actually fits with the world.
How does this not describe all but like 6 chinese cartoons? People cite Fate and One Peice as examples of decent Japanese worldbuilding, but both of those are literally 'cool shit thrown in becaue it's cool'.

>Pokemon
Has much bigger issues than that. Like letting 10-year-old run around on their own. Or the Economy. Or unaddressed mind control. Or the physical gods in tbe hands of ten year olds. And so forth.

It's like some weird autistic westfag that somehow has an inferiority complex with anime that lives rent free in his smooth brain.

Stop watching hot isekai fantasy garbage and watch some mystery, thriller, sci-fi anime

all you say when your series is called trash is "but m-muh world buildin!"
the npc meme is fucking stupid but you juan piss fags truly are npcs

>if you say the truth you're an NPC
Bad news for you, you're the NPC in here

>Nasuverse

Attached: vomit.jpg (680x680, 85K)

>Blame!
While I do like Blame! for what it is, most of it is ripped off.

Please go die in a fire, Moontard.

Why are barely out of middle school teenagers on Yea Forums making stupid fucking posts while making the assumption that they have enough depth of knowledge on any subject to make an informed opinion?

The answer is because you don't have that knowledge and the Dunning-Kruger effect is more prevalent in the adolescence of your shitty generation than any other in history. You're not in any position to make any claim, just like Japanese writers are not weak in worldbuilding like you claim.

Watch some anime and read some manga instead of playing some fucking JRPG and coming over from Yea Forums to post about it like you know anything.

The only consistent rule in the Nasuverse is that there are always exceptions to a rule. Or two. Or three. Sometimes you'll have more than a handful of exceptions with not a single conforming example in sight.

I don't care, if there being more sane berserkers than insane ones gives me my Mama, then all is right in the world.

look out, the juan piss fag is triggered!
immediately regurgitating the same insult used against them!

Go grab some book from YA section and see if you can still make the same claim.

Anime on average have better worlkdbuilding than western cartoons

Is worldbuilding the ultimate pleb filter?

I much prefer solid characters and plot than muh world like Aria, it sets up an interesting world but doesn't dwell on it instead focusing on the characters. I don't need 8 episodes or 20 chapters explaining why and how there a Venice replica on Mars, how they spent 400 years terraforming the planet or the mechanics of flying bikes work.

You know that's not a compliment. Just because you're not as bad as the guy who ate ten babies doesn't mean you're a good person.

where is that image from?

Honestly, characters matter far more than the worldbuilding.

Why do I watch/read Raildex, a literal Highschool AU? Because I care about Last Order and Accelerator.

Why do I watch/read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, a literal book written like an 18th century period book? I care about the Gentleman with Thistledown hair and Stephen.

Hyperion Cantos? Frederico de Soya. Darker than Black? Hei and Yin. Thrawn books? Thrawn and Pellaeon. Houseki no Kuni? Phos. Lord of Light? Sam. Elantris? Hrathen. Pandora Hearts? Rufus Barma. The Foundation series? Daneel and Hari Seldon. Beastars? Legosi and Ibuki. Evangelion? Kaworu. Terra Ignota? Mycroft Canner and Bridger. Fate Zero? Kerry. Coldfire Trilogy? Gerald Tarrant. Made in Abyss? Bondrewd. Revelation Space? Sky Haussman, Dr Tritnigant, Clavain and Remontoire. Kuroshitsuji? Sebastian. The Fifth Head of Cerebrus? Number Five. D Gray Man? Mana. The Picture of Dorian Gray? Dorian. Vanitas no Carte? Vanitas. The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch? Eldritch and Barney Mayerson. Gallifrey? Narvin, Braxiatel and Romana. Bungou Stray Dogs? Dazai. The Traitor Baru Comorant? Baru. Gundam? Char Aznable.

And these are a few of so many series that I enjoy. Sure, there are some series I love significantly more than any other series and very few that I would rate 5*, but you can't make me care about anyone without a functioning plot at least somewhere and a character to love. Some books and anime can sell themselves based on worldbuilding alone but it is very rare. Also length has no relation to quality whatsoever but of course I would love more of it if I enjoy it.

Worldbuilding is one of the criteria for a story but not the only criteria and one of the minor ones. In books, I pick based on character, plot, world, prose, in animu/mango I pick based on character, plot, world, art.

>The world building was so good
It's Japan, with state sanctioned cockfighting.

>I prefer well handled characters to badly executed worldbuilding
wew

>Nasuverse
>Worldbuilding
Toppest keks user. Seriously though, only KnK, Tsuki, FSN and HA alone ranged from decent world building to sublime (KnK to FSN). However everything after those main works crashed the setting without survivors, even Zero was complete garbage

Attached: 43-F10-01-51.jpg (796x596, 131K)

Not an argument. Thanks for the concession seeing you can't respond to being proven wrong, but you knew you were just some low IQ shitposter anyway so you should have expected this.

Anime used all its world building in 2004 and hasnt recovered since.

Attached: Gankutsuou.full.1476867.jpg (4000x2100, 1.48M)

It is, since together they make up the whole output of the medium.

You can't say X music artist is bad, if you also agree that every other artists ever to have lived was objectively worse than he is.
At that point, you have an issue with the medium, not the work of a specific artist (or a group of artists).

In the west, we had Tolkien who was a master of worldbuilding and then everyone tried to copy him to varying degrees of success. Japanese literature excels in other areas.

This thread is the result of confirmation bias and sturgeon's law. On the whole I actually think Japanese writers are better at worldbuilding than westerners; though their exposition skills can often be lacking and they have difficulties in other areas compared to American and European writers (such as satisfying endings and romance).
