To me this whole thing is weird as a whole. In Brazil we grew up with anime. And not just "yeah we watched DBZ too" but in the sense that if you were poor and didn't have cable tv all you had to watch was Soap Operas and Anime, and Sentai shows. Yu Yu Hakusho, Captain Tsubasa, InuYasha, are all classics here.
So even in highschool it wasn't weird for people to know and watch some anime. Aside from the most extremes cases, such as girls that wouldn't know anything that wasn't some shitty now trendy singer, a lot of people would actually know even some more ""underground"" shows, that you wouldn't see on TV, like Haruhi. Heck, on my first job I became friends with a guy because we started talking about Naruto Shippuden. He was the closest you can have of a blue-collar brazilian city redneck, and here he was talking about anime.
Even terms like otaku were really focused and you only knew what it was and what it meant if you called yourself one. To be bullied for anime you had to try really hard to make people want to use that.
It wasn't up until I started to visit english-speaking websites that I came across terms like "weeb" or this despise of anime. In fact, it wasn't until very recently that this started to leak into the brazilian websites and online communities.
