Or you can stop pretending that the subs are for a Japanese-speaking audience and localize them. If "oniichan" is being used as a pet name, pet names aren't uncommon in English. If it's being used casually between siblings, casual conversation between siblings in English just use the person's first name.

What's funny is that you never see people complaining about characters using keigo not being reflected in the subs. When that's about 10 times more important in terms of language-based context, because people in Japan will absolutely flip their shit internally if you fuck up social norms.

There are people who think honorifics should always be preserved, people who think they should only be preserved in works set in Japan, people who think they should be removed unless they're of importance to the relationship, and people who think they should always be removed. And probably another dozen smaller factions of people who think one usage is okay, but another is unacceptable, like people who think -san should become Mr. in appropriate situations, people who want to preserve sensei and senpai but don't care about other honorifics, it's all a fucking jumble of conflicting opinions, and yet YOU, and your other true Scotsmen, well, you're all slap bang in the middle ground of perfection.
