nothing past the start of vol. 4 is adapted into anime, though they're releasing a movie to cover vol. 4-5 (Bondrewd arc). Manga is good but release is slow.

That scene would've had more weight if:

Bondrewed had a neat idea for an experiment.

You send two people in elevators down to a lower level of the abyss. Then you bring them back up. Normally this would cause both of them to get fucked up by the "curse", but the elevator is designed in such a way that only one of the two people takes on the curse - the other receives what he calls the "blessing".

What you are seeing is the girl who got the full curse, which caused her to transform into a hideous immortal pile of flesh. The other girl got the "blessing" and became Nanachi, who is a fluffy miracle.

While this may seem incredibly cruel (it is), Bondrewd is a man of science whose ultimate goal is to discover a way to defeat/control the curse so that people can fully explore the Abyss.
