Even when Shana was airing, it was average. It had some interesting gimmicks but the development was normal for light novels of the time.
I have no idea what watching it in 2019 would be like. Light novel standards have fallen precipitously, and Shana is clearly better than most isekai shit, but at the same time it's filled with overdone stereotypes and is fairly vanilla.

I think more people recognize Asuka's design due to sheer exposure, but I wouldn't be surprised if more people recognize Louise as a tsundere. Having never watched NGE I was aware of Asuka's existence long before I knew that she was a tsundere - and I know plenty of people in the same boat - whereas it's essentially impossible to be exposed to Louise without being made aware of her tsundere status.

Naru's important, but Love Hina isn't as relevant as it used to be. She's kind of a missing link between Rumiko Takahashi-style "nice enough tomboy with a short fuse" and Tohsaka-style "huge bitch with a squishy secret heart".

I'm a bit biased since Shana has been my waifu for close to a decade, but it's pretty decent. Especially when compared to today's anime climate, the idea of a protagonist actually growing a pair of balls over time feels refreshing. The side chatacters are also fairly fleshed out and have their own motives and mini arcs instead of being only designated comic relief. The OPs and EDs are catchy too. Overall it's not gonna top anyone's all time favorite list, but it's a very solid show.
