Essentially, notice the entire books language--"i was hungry so I ate... maman died today...I shot him because the sun was bright...etc I felt like it...". The entire tone of the book is pointing to Camus' absurdist philosophy-- that there is no ultimate meaning behind anything we do. Mersault is what happens when you realize just how cold and unfeeling the meaningless universe is. You only act-- you are unable to find meaning in doing anything. It's all just sense and inclination-- never meaning.
