Nothing that I would recommend. While there was quite a few attempts at trying to place vampires in the future, most of those fell short either by offering some mundane explanation for their existence (a genetic quirk, as in 's Blindopraxia, a viral infection or even more exotic explanations) or making them some sort of supped up zombies. In both cases the end result is taking away from their mystique, making them far less interesting.
You could try Children of the Night by Dan Simmons. It has the problems I outlined above but it's well written.

The gems are few, that's why they are priceless. Most current sci-fi is shit: shitty romances and completely ordinary affairs but in the future, or in a spaceship, or with AI, or with dna engineering. Few books have something novel to contribute.

I think one of the defining traits of a typical web novel seems to focus on dialogue, regardless of how poorly written, above all else and sometimes to the exclusion of all else. Basically like comics/manga without the images or like a text message novel.
One would hope they'd improve after writing millions of words, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Web novels are the modern pulp in terms of quality, if not worse. Maybe penny dreadful or dime novel would be more accurate.
Don't take the ratings too seriously, because it ought to all be avoided.
I have severe doubts that anything on RoyalRoad would be worthwhile.
I had rated about half of them and then realized it was pointless because after a certain point they became indistinguisbaly bad.

I did read it, I thought it was actually pretty good, the litRPG shit was integrated in a way that didn't feel forced (no shit they'd quantify magical power especially when it's used as currency), the story doesn't spiral into godhood, the main characters feel relatable and lower-class without going full "woe is me", and the ending doesn't feel like it's just handed to the protagonist.
This, the Elders are clearly better at running this shit.

How the fuck are you supposed to follow Malazan? So many fucking names to remember. It never spends more than a sentence or two introducing new characters so you're never sure if it's a new character and very few characters have a distinctive personality or way of speaking to help with the memory.
I just about got to grips with most of the cast in Book 1, then Book 2 introduces a larger cast with only tiny number from book 1 re-occuring. I've heard it doesn't get much better as the series goes on, thinking of dropping it.

I just read the first one since everyone was talking about it. Feels surreal, like an unholy hybrid of chinkshit and YA. On the one hand I feel soiled, on the other I can't help but admit they fit together pretty well. I'm already sick of the "doh ho ho, I wonder how he'll get out of the next wacky adventure?" scifi interludes. That whole part just came across as forced. Suriel and the rest are less mysterious and more shallow and uninteresting. Hopefully it'll get better, as I imagine eventually it'll become more relevant, at least it doesn't take up too much space.

I just read pic related and the book two, I hardly ever read fantasy but this was highly recommended. The problem is the books were great but I feel that fantasy genre is for brainlets(or makes intelligent people into brainlets), I am a stem student and while I enjoyed this it didnt really introduce me to any new concepts and didnt make me think and imagine new things and possibilities, it was just swords, battles, some magic, it was good entertainment but after reading it I realize my mind has starved and withered (a little) by not being exposed to science for several days.

I miss being able to assume that there was a quality barrier in place for books. Self-published books - saturated with 5 star reviews despite the author having horrid prose - fill the Amazon and B&N websites. For a while, the brick and mortar stores (at least around me) were still free of them, but recently there has been a big influx of them into my local store. I don't know where to look for actually well-written books anymore. I know I'm autistic, but having well-polished prose is something I value highly, regardless of genre, and self-published stories usually have the bare minimum of effort put into them in that regard. I simply don't know where to look anymore.

Finally finished this. You can tell Gibson spent a lot of time rewriting the first half of the book, but the ending really shits itself with that Coda chapter. Thought the overall plot was actually ok (but hard to follow) but...

Personally. I could have done without this chapter. Maybe just a vague chapter of case in the hotel, but felt really lazy to wrap up the story so quick. That being said, still a good example of cyberpunk. Hard to believe it was written so long ago, really appreciated the world that was painted.

I'm ADHD as fuck and can pretty much only consume books as audio while I'm doing something else. That said, probably because my mind is always all over the place, I've never had a problem retaining audiobooks and in fact retain them better than text because as long as I'm occupied with something else my mind rarely wanders. Also I'm an electrical engineer, so I'm inclined to believe my IQ plays some part in not only my sporadic attention span, but the ability to process so much information efficiently.
I understand that this isn't the case for everyone.
That was more or less my experience as well. The beginning made a lot of sense and the novel peaked during the heist at the research center and dragged from there. Then they ended up spending about 60% of the book on that rastafarian space station and it lost me in places. The prose was a little esoteric by modern standards and it probably wasn't helped that I read it all in one sitting.

As a 25 year old zoomer now though, I really was fascinated by the perception of technology represented in this book. I've posted about it before, but I think that's why I enjoy older science fiction. It's a TRUE look on how society felt about the changes in technology. I just don't think you can capture that w/ nonfiction, because good science fiction is a product of the culture and times. I see a few reviews claim that it seems dated, but I definitely disagree. It's the nuances of AI that really bring it to life for me. Fascinating book, really. Just found out that maybe he was setting up more books in this Sprawl universe, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with this one. I found it interesting that surveillance wasn't a central theme of the book, on the topic of historical relevance. I don't know of any current works of SF, but if I had to write something like that, I'm sure that'd be a major topic. I'm too brainlet to imagine the future of technology however
I prefer reading to listening, but I've never had retention issues with audiobooks. Then again whenever I was a subject in a memory or processing related study back in university—quite often bc you got nice rewards for it—I was some sort of freakish outlier. So I'm not sure my experience w/ audiobooks really aligns with the average listener's. The only stuff I'd absolutely avoid in audio form regardless of narrator is nonfiction where one would normally refer back to previous pages or make meaningful use of diagrams.

Is it a bad idea to write a 300,000 word science fiction epic that will probably require sequels as my first major project after only short stories and articles?
The answer is most likely yes, but don't let anyone tell you want to do. Because at the end of the day, if you aren't enjoying what you are writing, it will almost always turn out shit.
Just understand it's a totally different beast. Longest thing I've written was around 250,000 and it takes quite a bit of determination to stay on track. Any break from writing longer than maybe three days will completely obliterate your character consistency unless you take religious notes, and since epics are constantly jumping between characters and scenes, you're pretty much always fumbling to remember how you wrote a particular thing when you return to it like 100k words later. My biggest piece of advice is simply stay focused.

Finished the third one, yep it's a repeating pattern. I have no hope of a reversal, and it's getting pretty bland and predictable. We've now settled firmly into bland, but palatable, mediocrity. It's a smooth and easy read, not hard to consume or digest, like a baloney sandwich. I figure I'll read the rest just out of momentum and then forget about it.
Took me a little over six months. My writing pace is pretty relaxed and I average between 1,000 - 1,500 words a day since I'm unfortunately employed and only have so much spare time.
