Cringe

1. He goes against the fashionable contemporary political current running through academia 2. He explicitly said that people should just go into STEM because the intellectual well of the humanities in the west has dried up, also stating that the academia of today are just a bunch of clowns because of that 3. Because of reason 2 a lot of academics like Weber just excommunicated him altogether. He's taboo. Verboten.

This.
And he is a proponent of cyclical history theory which is ignored today in favor of a progress theory. Liberals don’t like the idea that their ideology is one of decline.

IDK man i though he was good on breaking bad

Influenced Heidegger, Adorno and Wittgenstein. Not much more to be said.

If you have a fifth grade reading level and read 3+ History books you would ignore him too. Autistic "systems of civilization" based on vast generalizations that falls apart with basic knowledge is midwit crack. Only read him for fun like you would read genre fiction

Did he ever intend on engaging academia as opposed to just the population at large?

Was he an academic historian himself ?

Wow a onions wojak!

That's a lot of words to say a whole lot of nothing.

He worked in university, then quit after receiving an inheritance from his mother

I really just wasted 20 minutes of my life reading that worthless article

I agree, good description of Spengler

>That's a lot of words
This is your brain on Yea Forums

Your inane criticism didn't say anything of substance. You only claimed that his theory of civilization life cycles was wrong without providing any examples.

this man is completely ignored by academia because he was wrong about everything.

Read Kissinger's dissertation

>taking words out of context
indeed, idiots do browse Yea Forums

Look at this shit LMAO where do you even start. I'm honestly overwhelmed at the prospect

Attached: downloadfile-22.jpg (860x3333, 536K)

He literally just quoted 90% of your post and you're talking about "out of context" no faggot you're just a retard who posted a retarded comment, even "in context"

I don't get it, are you admitting to being a brainlet?

Spengler took historical data like Goethe treated data on botany. morphology that contradict with "scientific" data.
Yeah. I don't see why he is ignored. Everybody including Toynbee to Edward Carr says empirical history positivism is false narrative and we should abandon it.
Look at Spangler, he is the greatest opponent of that.

*an onions
retard

>your post
i wasn't the guy he originally replied to, dingus
i also have no idea where you pulled the 90% number from but i guess we're just making shit up as we go along now

No I just don't care that much, just wanted to drop in and tell you that you're a retard. Don't say it's Spengler, I encourage you to take that chart to a teacher you know even somewhat specializing in any of those periods and ask them how you feel it is portrayed. You don't even have discuss the interpretations and philosophy of history and culture Spengler has (which hinges on the "facts" he gives examples of), just the very basic topics. I really don't think you understand how complex and random historical study can get when you dive deep into a chosen domain. When you come out the grand narrative charts of civilizations type works that was fun to read before now seem hilarious with it's sweeping gospels. You begin to see it not as a history book, but a historical book. It's like reading Machiavelli's the Florentine Chronicles. If Spengler is of interest you're already on the path to learn this on your own. Pick one of those civilizations or cultures listed check out a few books on the topic and see how you feel afterwards. Can you put your own life on the chart as rigid as that? Why would it be the same for something so much bigger and complex?

Anyone knows if this edition is any good? It's abridged sadly but still 480 pages

I don't know about every country but I have seen plenty of academic papers and even vulgrarisation press articles mentioning Spengler. He's not ignored, he is known and discussed, just heavily criticised by historians and more appreciated for his philosophical outlook. It's a bit of the same with Toynbee.

Find an unabridged edition.

Because western academics are afraid

He inspired my interest in the other cultures he talks about enough to validate his claims about the cyclical model. I've read about Egypt and China much more than Mexico or Arabia but even that check out at a glance. His basic claims like the transition from a spiritual rural Culture period to a materialistic "industrial" Civilization period do appear to be valid, and it's not a coincidence that they all end in a Universal State. Even the specifics are accurate i.e. the nobility losing their power as the State becomes absolutist, then dissolution of both the traditional nobility and the absolutist state in favor of bourgeois politics. Also his predictions about the West in the last 100 years have been mostly accurate.

>wahhhhhhh mom he said that we’re gonna expand past our carrying capacity make the bad man thoughts not be real

By carrying capacity I also mean our ability to not unravel before technology.

because grand narratives are fucking retarded tomber bullshit that people used to argue about alongside phrenology. nowadays it is acknowledged that categorizing history like this, as some cohesive story with an arc, is stupid and dunning-kruger pilled, you cannot possibly know such a thing and it's hubris to make such wide statements. better to specialize, we have the tools now.

Thanks for the advice dad I’ll go back to building you a new machine to kill iranian women with in a couple minutes

alright thanks, make sure it sucks my dick too though

So you want the aegis to always say that the planes an F14 now? Are you sure it won’t shoot down our own planes?

>And he is a proponent of cyclical history theory which is ignored today in favor of a progress theory.
I'm a proponent of the double helix theory.

This is pretty epic.

You can compare various other lives lived, such as individual humans or amphibians, and still agree that they all do have a lifespan and developmental phases - despite this being a major, major simplification. Not at all a good ground to shape your life after as a whole, but a good amount of knowledge to utilize.

with all due respect Sepngler does sometimes dirft off into the esoteric, but he does anticipate exactly your criticism in the Decline of the West. If I remember correctly his reasoning is that history is part of the "becoming" and thus a priori not completely comprehensible via the "systematic". The latter is his term for exact and empirical sciences and, I think, your proposed understanding of historical sciences falls under that category

>20 minutes
Brainlet dyslexic detected

>cyclical
>progressive
both none of them are right. why would there be a pattern in historical trends? seems like ideological glasses to me.

>mfw people on Yea Forums still anticipate the coming Caesarism
>mfw just read Prussianism and Socialism, and Spengler said that Faustian Caesarism will either take the form of Prussianism (i.e. Fascism) or English global liberal-capitalism; and that this would be fought out in a huge battle (i.e. he predicted WW2)
>mfw Caesarism is already here and it's the latter Pretty depressed now lads

>Pretty depressed now lads
didn't mean to greentext this part but you get the point

I'm trying but they are hard to find, for a reasonable price at least

cuz he did have a loisionce for dat

Nah it's still too early for Caesarism
Prussianism was written at a time in Spengler's life when he was pretty depressed because Germany lost WW1 and he hated the Weimar republic

he rejects grand narratives you mong

>Forgotten, Spengler takes his revenge by threatening to, be right. His oblivion in the midst of confirmation endows the ominous idea of blind fatality which emerges from his conception with an objective moment. When, at the time, seven German academicians joined forces in the periodical Logos to finish off the outside, their philistine zeal provoked derision. Today their zeal seems less harmless; it testifies to an intellectual impotence comparable to the political impotence of the Weimar Republic faced with Hitler. Spengler found hardly an adversary who was his equal; his oblivion is the product of evasion.

Attached: Adorno.jpg (200x245, 8K)

Except we got the Liberal-Capitalism

>completion of the mosque (hagia sophia)
ok, this is blatantly retarded.

It makes sense if you consider that Spengler saw Byzantium and Islam as two parts of the same cultural cycle, as opposed to the West. Which is still retarded, imho, but not as retarded as it first seems

>My name is Isaac Schrader

>he predicted WW2
so did Nostradamus

Because nobody would take a fucking DEA agents word on anything other than drugs or beaners

At least you concede, most academics spend their paragraph denying it entirely.

>no caps
>hates grand narratives
>"but like... how could you KNOW"

>predicting future events is impossible
Stop telling on yourself.

Kek

What are Spengler's views on the occult?

Ask his alter ego.

Second Religiousness, empty and hollow posturing

I have never seen a more serious looking motherfucker than this guy.

he thought it was utter faggotry

Poll: How many people on here have read the unabridged Decline of the West and Man and Technics? reply if you have

But what about First Religiousness?

Attached: think about it.jpg (1280x720, 91K)

i have not.

i'll done in a week

*be done

I only read the first part where he really outlines his major ideas and the overall life-cycle of a civilization

this thread makes more sense now. make sure you read man and technics right after. more important than decline.

thanks

I really like the typography they used for the German title.

I read both volumes, man&technics, Prussianism and Socialism, and The hour of decision
So basically most of everything he wrote

I'm currently reading a marxist historian and he mentions Spengler occasionally

I spent 10 of those minutes laughing

>grand narratives are fucking retarded

but stupid ideas and concepts like rights, constitutions and other forms of global domination are not?

Social egalitarianism is the final and inevitable truth. This Progress is obviously above critique, as well all know many esteemed, scientific, and objective academics would agree that the arc of history bends towards justice

History is fiction
