The essence of the Upanishads was already in the early Vedas, exemplified by passages from it describing the supreme being in the same way that the Upanishads do such as "the Solar Self of all that is in motion or at rest' - (Rig-Veda 1.115.1). There is no evidence whatsoever that the Harappans has anything similar. The Upanishads just made more explicit what was already implicit in the Vedas.
