Not enough women or people of colour. I'm disappointed in you, Booker.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

It's a good start but the fact it's in english is a bit ignorant, as english is the language of the colonizer.

I would like to see some non-literate non-able bodied afro-supremacist literature in the the future

This kind of makes Salman a token there. Although, I've heard Quichotte is far from his best

Anyone here read that new Chigozie joint?

Is he good? Does he write to educate the world on the Nigerian struggle?

bernadine evaristo looks like sideshow bob

separated at birth

Attached: sideshow-bob.jpg (350x350, 19K)

I don't know. I hadn't heard of him until just now, but I like his name.

I mean, my first impulse is to shit on this list, for the obvious reasons. But who should have made a proper list? Truly asking, not very informed on recently released literature

>Does he write to educate the world on the Nigerian struggle?
He's barely even Nigerian, he's from a wealthy family and has spent a vast majority of his life in America.

No idea, but what are the chances that a legitimate list of the best current novels would consist entirely of books written by women and non-whites, i.e. historically the worst novelists? Of course it's possible, but only in the way that "anything's possible".

The booker and many other prize remind me more and more of the Soviet literary establishment. The Stalin prize for literature was awarded every year beginning in the early 1940s and it too had a near obsessive focus on diversity and the breadth of the socialist world. Every year official writers from Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Georgia and any other soviet or socialist republic were included or awarded the prize, most of whom wrote simiplistic, easily forgettable prose that ticked all the right boxes for the legitimacy of the regime. The real difference was between official and unofficial writers, who were very often published abroad or as samizdat.

The jews who ran the Soviet Union are the same jews who are running the west's institutions now, so this similarity should come as no surprise. Jews view white men as their primary threat so they insulate their power by promoting the Other.

no way this is a woman

This

Ducks, Newburyport sounds fun.

Everyone in this thread is just assuming, without any evidence, that all of these works were included to fulfil some diversity quota. It's quite funny, actually, since when feminists talk about women being underrepresented in literature you say "That's because women can't write," whereas when men are underrepresented you say, "Ugh it's just the Jewish agenda". This way you've concocted yourself a nice catch-22 which guarantees white men are always dominating literature, since any diversion from the phallocentric order is dismissed as being "artificial affirmative action agenda".

Why don't you give an actual substantive reason for why you think these books are unworthy of winning a prize and recommend some better books you think should have won it? Oh yeah, you can't, because you haven't read them.

>implying burgers can be assed to learn languages that aren't spanish or german
lmao

the novel is a feminine genre
(real) men write poetry

Books? Real men post selfies on Instagram

>Oh yeah, you can't, because you haven't read them.
Nobody.

Even the Goncourt isn't quite as laughable.

>niggers
>feminist
>muslims

Yeah, don't care

elif shafak is hot
also she wrote a book about the armenian genocide, so she's ok with me

Attached: 800px-ElifShafak_Ask_EbruBilun_Wiki.jpg (800x1205, 145K)

1. Margaret Atwood (Canada), "The Testaments"
2. Lucy Ellmann (USA/UK), "Ducks, Newburyport"
3. Bernardine Evaristo (UK), "Girl, Woman, Other"
4. Chigozie Obioma (Nigeria), "An Orchestra of Minorities"
5. Salman Rushdie (UK/India), "Quichotte"
6. Elif Shafak (UK/Turkey), "10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World"

Looks like a reasonable field. I haven't read most of these, but I've read several of the authors. I assume you're upset because an international prize shortlist isn't just made up of white guys from England or New England?

Attached: tea ads_.jpg (1152x1440, 296K)

The fact that post-Verses Rushdie might be the best thing of that bunch terrifies me.

it seems she really pisses off the turkish establishment. i like her already

Attached: 2019-09-03_1429.png (726x888, 348K)

The "literary scene" has been run by sycophants and mediocrities since the 1700s. Don't pay it any attention. If you give a shit about the booker prize or any prize at all you yourself are the problem

That said, my lord it's literally beyond parody

Now do the holodomor.

It's hard to say when books are placed on the list literally pre-publication. Some eligible but ignored books haven't even been reviewed yet.

Non whites from India have a respectable enough track record

>I assume you're upset because an international prize shortlist isn't just made up of white guys from England or New England?
Clearly some kind of phobia.

I don't know whether to read her or not. Being anti-Erdogan suggests good taste; her TED talk is sort of sanctimonious. Her novel's premise sounds interesting; it's marketing suggests that it's tame holiday reading.

Anyone here actually touched her stuff?

shafak wrote about the armenian genocide because she's of turkish origin and it is part of her cultural background. perhaps you could get a russian or ukrainian writer to write about the holodomor. there is plenty of stuff about it already, including pic related which was released this year.

at least the soviet cultural establishment was rational in that it was designed to promote cultural and moral cohesion. While the western establishment seems designed to foster atomised and narcissistic consumer values and a perpetual victim mentality. contrast the bombastic sloganeering of a Pravda with the shrill whiny tone of the Guardian, makes Kruschev's Russia look like the epitome of health! The neoliberal western system is even more effective at supressing dissidence and genuine artistic expression than the soviet system ever was.

>Her novel, which runs to a whopping 998 pages, is a stream-of-consciousness monologue that is largely made up of one continuous sentence.

This is always such bullshit. Take a passage of writing, replace full stops with commas or semicolons, remove paragraph breaks, declare yourself a modernist.

Attached: duck.jpg (190x265, 7K)

I was thinking of maybe checking that book out but this ain't it chief. This is some post-ironic internet humor shit right here.

Perec did a pretty good job with it in The Art And Craft of Approaching Your Head of Department to Submit A Request for a Raise

>Chigozie Obioma

Based, the poor are scum

also she's a cultist (aka Gulenist movement)

Plus her novels are trash.

I say don't bother.

Go read Disconnected by O. Atay. Much better and more influential work. (Recently translated to English)

That's where you're mistaken. She _was_ with the establishment, actually she was the mouthpiece for the Gulenist approach to Islam marketed towards the white-collars in Turkey.

She fell from grace after the coup attempt.

I'm 100% anti-erdoğan yet I find her work bland. And opinionwise she's irrelevant.

yet she's a QT.

Literally no idea what this post was meant to mean

this dude understands what it takes nowdays

>Margaret Atwood
Lol. She writes one alright dystopian novel that happens to also be a sexual fantasy for most women and now she’s considered a great writer?

>implying burgers can be assed to learn German or even Spanish

i hate the kind of people described in that image

Atwood was getting critical attention for novels 50 years ago, her first GG finalist was 40 years ago, and her first Booker finalist was 34 years ago (she didn't win until 2000). She's had a huge career as a novelist and poet, user, whether you like her work or not, and she's the biggest name on that short list, including Rushdie.

Attached: Atwood.jpg (1200x765, 274K)

That's not what /pol/ told me.
Which means you are lying.

Lucy Ellmann is the daughter of Richard Ellmann, who wrote the classic biography of Joyce.

"Ducks, Newburyport" is getting comparisons to "Ulysses."

You got me. She's actually a 17 year-old trans girl from Johannesburg who only writes about interracial cuckolding and incest.

It’s emotional smut directed at women, in the ethnostate no one will remember her anyway so don’t waste your time

>rushdie and atwood are the only recognizable names
>continue to write shit books decades after their mediocre manum opera
weak timeline

"In the ethnostate"? Sure, good luck with that, you silly maggot.

Are any of her books actually good? The Blind Assassin was pretty boring but that's all I've read by her.

Attached: 71uFI2+j+GL.jpg (777x1198, 223K)

old hag

Surfacing is good, if Yea Forums is to be trusted

Interested in Ducks, Newburyport.

I hope it's a proper modernist novel, and not just standard writing with fullstops replaced by commas.

> (OP)
>Not enough women or people of colour. I'm disappointed in you, Booker.

not enough bangladeshis or cambodians. we are not happy!

>You have to keep reading an endless pile of award winning crap to be allowed to say it's crap

I sampled a dozen or so recent Hugo nominated novels and with the exception of The Three Body Problem every single one was crap. Total steaming smelly awful crap, written either by somebody who checked some diversity checkbox or John Scalzi who screams like a lunatic about leftism on Twitter all day. Am I required to keep reading these things forever to be allowed to say the process is broken and the award is given almost exclusively to crap? Because when I read older books that were nominated for the same award there is some crap, but it's not 11/12 of them.

>emotional smut
>ethnostate
Ironically, if you make the second one true you'll literally prove true everything she's ever said.

>if you win you prove ME right and proving ME right is more significant than winning
you sound like a battered housewife, margaret

I have to admit, it wasn't written by a woman and I wasn't so utterly suspicious of the desire of the literary board to promote women because of their gender instead of their merit, I would look deeper into this, but since that isn't the case, I won't.

i'll never be able to share my gratitude with the guy who made this image, what a great image.

i'll never understand why a moment in history like ours, characterized by such bizarre and hypertrophied social relations, doesn't have more sociologically inclined people like this giving "thick" descriptions of dynamics like this, which are actually very pervasive and subtly systemic. this guy should be writing a book on the repressed männerbund dynamics of male hobbyism under late capitalism and how women act as vectors of schumpeter's creative destruction, colonizing areas of built-up negativity and potential lignes de fuite, and reintegrating them back into the machine by using their vaginal capital as a universal solvent of alterity. instead he just has flashes of insight, maybe 1/10000 of which he crystallizes in something concrete like this, and maybe 1/10000 of those actually enter into circulation in objective spirit, and he's maybe one of 1/10000 potentially creative men like him who are fortunate enough to actually channel his insight into a concrete act of instantiation once in a while.

instead sociologists and anthropologists churn out literally thousands upon thousands of phd theses a year form squarely within the bourgeois mentality, just reinscribing the same already-assimilated shit about fags and minorities like an endless game of telephone, and constructing layers and layers and layers of institutional and meta-institutional verification and vetting to sort out which player of the game of telephone gets $21,000 of grant money this year and which gets only $17,000 and which gets to become a vetter of the next generation of equally vacuous theses. even the people who specifically set out to study something like Yea Forums somehow spend 8 years writing a phd on it and they end up with a surface-level analysis of ten year old memes gleaned from skimming wikipedia. you'd think with 8 years, even a mediocrity would produce SOME insight, even if only by accident?

how is it possible that not even some of the insightful people manage to trickle through and become a georg simmel, a werner sombart, a james burnham, a theodor adorno? the will seems to be there, Yea Forums alone is filled with young men angsty enough to dedicate themselves to serious study if only to spite normies for fun. so why do they never make it? why do we only get faggoty reddit/twitter tryhard shit at best, shit that smells like reddit from a mile away? i want the modern simmel to emerge from internet misogyny, where are the simmel caliber thought leaders?

is this literary shitposting?

>waah i can be a writer too, look!!
>literally just writes down her internal monologue

and gets praised for it

>why a moment in history like ours ... doesn't have more sociologically inclined people like this giving "thick" descriptions of dynamics like this

there's plenty of written matrial, user. You just don't hear about it because it gets discredited as being the ramblings of a pathetic incel or some angry undesirable pathetic losers. It gets systematically shamed so that nobody would ever want to associate with it.

This is why women should be property

Video games and pornography are a terrifying damper on the heights of male productivity.

fuck the booker prize

Lmao
Some of those titles read like parodies of SJWism.

Not one white male.

The very system of Managerial gynocracy is inimical to genuine thought or art or even individuality. 'Identities' exist purely as administrative categories and marketing demographics, hollow shells to be filled with hegemonic consumer values, any literature is merely a paper by product of the system

woke

underated post

>TL;DR No Girls Allowed at my sikret klub
lmao

Its like these popular authors are good at coming up with trendy titles, and that's all that's to it. "The Testaments." This is brilliant, regardless of the book's content.

First impressions are big factors. Its not like you'd want to read a book called "The Wizard and Dragon" at first glance now would you?

The CHAD effortpost

The ROASTIE phonepost

Not bigger than Rushdie. Rushdie is fucking massive, insane global impact, one of the only writers who gets into actual history books, also way more critical appeal. He's shit now, but he's colossal.

I think Handmaid's is fine. Cat's Eye too. The sci-fi is just okay.

>grab 'em by the smartphone

What? Grumpy boomer tier moaning here. Probably wishes she could have reputable intellectual heavyweight Ronald Reagan back at the helm, or at least Dubya

kek

Has anyone read the Duck book?

I'm interestesd but I think "the fact that" beign repeated so often is going to bore the shit out of me.

Now realize that sociology and anthropology and every other academic discipline have gone through a version of that image except with talentless wannabe academics as the newcomers and it will all come together.

>3 wimminz
>3 mystery meats
>even the titles make it clear they're out to score pussy points or brown points and have absolutely nothing else to say
wow, clearly unbiased, no agenda, completely merit based decisions here. call me and wake me up when publishing is no longer pozzed, please. this is why i pirate everything.

if you buyfag you fund this retardation. daily reminder that buyfags are cancer and deserve literal cancer.

The Don Quixote rehash?

She's decent but doesn't hold a candle to Pamuk.

I agree, actually. I meant to write "not including Rushdie." Still, they're not that far off in some ways. For instance, the internet claims she's worth 20 mil, and he's only worth 15.

Attached: yan-hidayat-83417111-589f2ae5bce173.jpg (1280x980, 184K)

Not much. The one-sentence thing has been done on smaller scales, so it just seems like show.
Others don't sound too promising. Not a big Rushdie fan.
I'm trying to catch up on dead authors. There are too many.

David Luiz hasn't slept since giving away that penalty against Liverpool.

Has anyone actually read any of the books?

No one has, including the committee.

>Oh yeah, you can't, because you haven't read them.
Of course, why would you have these things on your shelf next to classics?

nah, the booker prize has been a joke for decades now

lmao

A FUCKING FISH

Yet Pamuk is thoroughly provincial and 2nd rate. God damn the Nobel is bad.

Last year was quite good. Didn't like the winner at all, but Powers, Robertson, Kushner all wrote good books. 2016 was really good and a great winner. It's literally just a question of who they appoint as judges on a year by year basis.

I don't read contemporary literature, so honestly I don't know.

is that a man or a woman?

possibly

that guy is jewish, he was talking about Israel

What's your Turkish lit rec then?
