Thoughts on Ernest Hemingway? I have to read a bunch of his short stories for a modern lit class I'm taking...

For Hemingway you need to know three things.

1. It's prose poetry.
2. Turgenev was his hero.
3. He was raised as a girl until he was five.

I tried to read The Old Man and the Sea, but I stopped because the prose was banal and lacking of any artistic/interesting qualities. I value style over substance, though, so you may have a different experience and enjoy his work.

It's modern American literature. We're reading Frost, Hemingway, Faulkner and then a bunch of women and niggers. In another lit class we read East of Eden in its entirety.

I've read 2 of his short stories before. This will be the first time I ever read a good amount of his stuff.

He is great. The book of his that's relevant to Hemingway is A Sportsman's Notebook.

"Francis Macomber" is one of the best short stories I've ever read, shows woman's true nature like no other piece of written literature.

Anyway, whites in America didn't need a racial movement, since they weren't boxed in in ghettos nor had their skin colour be seen as the forefront part of their identity. They were always the ruling class. I can see why Irish or Italian pride is acceptable since "Irish" and "Italian" is a narrow identity, but "white" is too broad of a category to be ossified into an identity. "Black" would be too were it not for their unique history of marginalisation in America, which caused them to develop accents and an entirely separate culture to the broader American society.

A recently freed, uneducated, and largely illiterate population, most of whom did not speak African languages, were supposed to just start cutting down trees and building ships to go back to lands they didn't know? Secondly, white hegemony has always existed in America; especially in the 1920s, white people were the majority of land owners and employers and teachers, having access to the best education and necessary things for development, whereas blacks had nothing. It's not hard for us to see, then, how this sort of system would lead and did lead to negative outcomes for the blacks in America.
