It's more than translation/edition. The 1929 English edition is based on 2nd German edition, which is more literally adult but already less wild than the 1920 and 1924 ed(with total print of about 100 books), then the typical German edition came in I thin 1932 or 1935, and then another one in 1960's. The man who changed the book is Junger himself. Source - penguin edition's introduction.

There were 2 German edition in 1920's, the original in 1920, about 100 books or so and the 2nd in 1924, the 1929 translation is based on 1924 edition and then the typical German version is the 1930's one.

That's not true at all. Northern Africans and Ethiopians were even more civilised than Europeans in antiquity. Africans were given full citizenship in Rome, hardly something that would happen if they thought they weren't human, and I know of no record of race conflicts. At one point Rome even had an African emperor. King Solomon and Moses are said to have slept with Ethiopian women, even though Israelite law outlawed bestiality. The idea that Africans are non-human is one that arose from colonialism.
