is it just me or does the part of 1984 where he reads a book inside the book totally suck dick? it's boring, way too long and at a time where you're invested in what's gonna happen with the actual characters next. but the worst part is that the overall society they describe in that part makes no sense, while oceania itself seems pretty well thought out and interesting

is that the alternative das kapital part? i liked it, but it is super long
I mean that book that winston gets where it describes the state of the world
That's the most important part imo, that and the torture scene where O'Brian proves to Winston that any human can be broken by fear to betray those that they love. It may be a little klunky, but I think that understanding that part of the book is what separates the people who really read 1984 from the people who bought it after Kellyanne Conway's "alternative facts" line. I mean, it is a book about dystopian government that lies to people, but that is covered in the first third. That final section really shows how easily a person's humanity can be destroyed. It's also devastating how O'Brian gives Winston the book to read and understand, knowing that he can still force him to love Big Brother no matter how much knowledge he gains. Kind of a foil to the comforting notion that knowledge is power. I don't mean to try and explain the book to you, that's just what it meant to me.
The best part of the book is when he gets to nut in that chick... Just saying, imagine being forced not to have sex and then bang, you bang her not only in that society, but you bang her in a public place! Badass!
Goldstein's book was necessary for world building. But when you really think about it, a society like 1984's is literally unsustainable, even from a logistics point of view. War is costly and no state on Earth can continue warring forever, the Party would eventually run out of manpower and resources to keep the war going, especially since no land or resources are ever gained from the enemy, which would give a decisive advantage to the victor and would ensure that one of the states wins.
Look at the middle east now.
That was my favorite part. Before that it set up this world that was interesting, but you knew nothing about. An in depth explanation of the world was just what I wanted.
The US plans to pull out as soon as the oil runs out, not to mention that a lot of the fighting is done by terrorists and midwestern governments. The War Economy concept from MGS fits better
It did drag on but it was quite interesting to learn about how War is peace and how Freedom is slavery.
it's just that the whole concept of these three countries that stay at war over this certain part of the world seems a bit illogical, I'm nit denying that it's an overall necessary part, I was particularly looking forward to the part where he describes what life is like in the other two states
I think part of what makes the book interesting is how much you don't find out... are Eurasia and Eastasia actually enemies of Oceania? Is Big Brother a person? Etc.
>It was a false memory.
do you have false memories Yea Forums?
no my memory is really good
mine is shit :(
Literally the best part of the book. Supreme brainlet post OP
This.
The book is essentially about consciousness and the exploration of a conscious being. The most telling lines are "God is Power", "for every person there is something that cannot be faced", "there is no shame in turning away from it", when O Brien proves Winston is a hypocrite and then "closed his eyes as if the display meant nothing to him", etc.
The whole point is that the book itself could be a grand lie and also it doesn't matter if it is "logical" or not, it's a theme.
Coming up for air is better.
The wrst part about 1984 is that it is a novel. Should have just been an essay, as the novel itself is quite bad.
This is pretty off topic but the US might never leave the Middle East. Lithium and gold are integral resources to modern tech and
