Yup, that's a sad one.

I self-published this one book, a novella. 'Another One Please', it's about a shitty marriage between a young couple, the wife turns out to be barren even though she has lots of female relatives who've had kids, some several. She won't accept it. He's had his stuff checked out and he's in the clear, she refuses to check and is adamant that it's him. She's turned to alcoholism, rarely showers, he works hard but doesn't even sleep in the bedroom anymore and elects to take the couch. He's regularly abused by her physically and verbally, he's stayed at the pub until closing on many occasions where there's an older female bartender whom is something of a confidante and friend to him.

He contemplates divorce, but knows he'll get fucked in court. Talks to a few guys about it, including one whom is divorced and suffering through it. Eventually the protagonist contemplates suicide. Now I'm a gun nut, but the protagonist is a moron with firearms, it's kind of comedic as he tries to figure out how to work the pistol, and well, it doesn't go well for him. Or I guess in a way it does. Anyways, he doesn't die, and from a smart old man at the pub he learns of this strategy that he could use to potentially keep his money, or most of it. Ultimately, he does divorce her, and he isn't completely economically ruined. She got the house and truck, granted, but he got his money and freedom. He gets with the roughly middle-aged woman, she by some miracle manages to have a child for him, and right near the end of the story they're having a picnic on the front lawn of their house.

The ex-wife drives through the nice white fence, over the lawn, nearly them, and as I recall rams partways through a wall of the house. She gets out, drunk, and with the pistol he had tried to kill himself with. Like him, she's useless with a gun, and he realizes that she didn't have a round chambered as she tries to pull the trigger. He jumps her, and he's savage at her. Rips the pistol from her hands, pushing it towards her face, shouting his head off at how she put his family at risk. She's crying, lost the house a long time ago, had been living in the truck but I think soon to lose that too, she's desperate. She reaches for the pistol, pushes his finger either accidentally or intentionally, and there on his front lawn with neighbours witnessing he ends up shooting her in the head.

The law OBVIOUSLY gets involved, he spends a bit of time in lock-up, I recall the charges being dropped, but he's haunted by the event. So there's closure, the ex-wife is gone, permanently, but he essentially murdered someone, his new wife witnessed it, as did his child and his wife's child that she had had years ago with someone else, and so I certainly wouldn't call it a 'happy ending'. Pretty tragic, but at least he's free of her...
