I am honestly so sick of tragic protagonists. My story was built on one but I'm thinking of either making him indifferent as shit to all his garbage, or changing it as a whole.
What do you think?
I am honestly so sick of tragic protagonists...
So Mersault?
Who?
Read The Stranger by Camus.
I agree. they're fucking obnoxious and exhausting. yes, it's so sad. mope some more you stupid asshole. it's always the same shit.
a tragic backstory is fine, but make the protagonist have an actual personality.
So, have you ever found one that had personality and a tragic thing going on? I have yet to find one, but I'm also uncultured as hell.
no. that's the problem. they're always so completely boring, because the entire character's only personality trait is "I'm sad and I refuse to try and change that". I guess the closest thing would be batman, or something. the only way a tragic character can work is if he's got another motivation besides... what, wallowing or revenge.
Trying to get better, or it's not central to the story. I don't know.
the best tragic character I can think of off the top of my head is Envy from FMA:B- because in his moment of weakness you just fucking pity him. You still hate him because he's a stupid piece of shit, but you get like, this little insight into why. I've never dealt with that before- seeing a character be so abruptly pathetic that I ache for him, but I still hate his fuckass. That is expert writing. Actually, Yeah. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is fucking amazing. Now that I think about it, most of the characters can be considered tragic. Kids fuck with god, god fucks them back, people traumatized by genocide and war, from both sides, sad shit in general... you see a lot of characters trying to deal with what has happened to them, and what they've done to other people It is, unironically, a fantastic story, expertly told, regardless of medium.
You got to agree that Ed was sometimes super melodramatic about it though. Everyone else was fine, he just got a little too monolougy, but that could just be my preference.
Greed's change was a little bullshit but I was still okay with it.
Envy's shit was pretty based.
The best characters are the two buff dudes and the teacher lady. They all dealt with their shit in pretty realistic fashions.
It's been awhile, I'm not remembering some names, but I agree.
>batman
>fullmetal alchemist
Get in line or go away. Read real tragic heroes; literally start with the Greeks
Yeah, that's true, but you gotta admit, that's just Ed's personality, which is valid. It's not that he's TRAGIC, it's that he's just a dramatic bitch, which is established in detail. Just look at the shit he likes and creates. Skulls 'n shit everywhere. And the entrance exam? Also, he's, what, fifteen? So I don't dock points for that.
Look at this sad fuck that's never watched FM:B
Not him but already did.
>Achilles gets mad
>Odysseus just tanks it
>Achian is a splice of the above two
>Madea gets batshit crazy
All neat responses, but Achilles was a bit of a bitch baby at certian points.
I forgot he was a teen, you're right about that. Only reason everyone else was level was because Al is too young to be edge and everyone is too old to be edge.
Fuck Kurapika from HxH 2011 though, if it wasn't for the presentation being on point I would have gotten annoyed as balls.
Yeah. I appreciate HxH's steep decline into batshit crazy, but Kurapika always felt too out of nowhere. He's the calm, soft spoken one, and then suddenly he's a psycho crazy mercenary. Liked everyone else tho, their arcs were well done.
Speaking of HxH, Kurama was so fucking annoying in the beginning, too. My... dear mother... is dying, so... I'm going to commit suicide to save her. Yeah, OKAY, Kurama, calm the fuck down.
Characterization wise
>Leorio -> Killua -> Gon -> Meurem -> hell even the butterfly faggot ---------> Kurapika
Leorio is one based motherfucker for getting his backstory out in 20 words or less.
Never saw the old one so I don't know who Kurama is but he sounds terrible.
Kurama is from YYH, by the same guy. I love YYH, but Kurama was a little hard to swallow.
Leorio is an absolute lad. And I was a little surprised that his arc was so straightforward.
>Wants to become a doctor > Leorio starts studying to be a doctor > Leorio opens his free clinic
I was worried he'd pull some Brock kind of shit and "postpone" his dream to follow Gon and Killua around.
Leo knocking Gin the fuck out.
I think it was nice that it was straightforward. Him punching Gin was a nice touch.
yikes; skipped the Greeks did we?
Yea Forums in a nutshell
Too bad they scrapped his character in the later episodes
is this a bait thread? what the fuck happened in here??
Yeah, it was nice turn of events.
Toguro (YYH) was another great tragic figure, but I could never figure out if he was cliche or not. Still, they played it off really well.
Have you seen Samurai X? That fucking destroyed me when I was 13.
chill
>the best tragic character I can think of off the top of my head is Envy from FMA:B
OH NONONONO
did you see his death scene?
Nah I haven't seen either of the ones you just mentioned.
If you ignore it, it'll go away.
how come this monkey looks like a handsome guy on old byzantine icons? wtf
Ah, pity. YYH is a quality tourney anime with a lot of emphasis on what it means to be good and evil and why. It was formative for me.
Samurai X is a movie to another anime from my formative years, Rurouni Kenshin, which is about an assassin from the meiji revolution trying to atone for everyone he's ever killed. It's a classic.
The movie is a movie about him before he stopped being an assassin- he kills a woman's fiance, who then swears revenge on him and gets close to him with the intent to eventually kill him. They hide out in the mountains together and awkwardly start a life together on a farm. slowly, the autistic killing machine and her fall in love. The last act is our main character torn between hating her for betraying him, and desperately trying to save her. In the end it's all futile anyway.
It's not a very original story, but it's good. It's a lot more serial experiments lain than the original show. It's a lot darker. And it's really shocking if you know the original show first. Ah, it's just really fucking good.
only trust and betrayal, the four part OVA series of rurouni kenshin is worth watching, its a masterpiece from beginning to end, the rest you can ignore, another masterpiece is flanders no inu, however it is based on a book but the anime movie is perfection, stuff like fma and yyh is neat but its kinda cringe it would be "formative" for you, we are after all on a lit board, for manga kokou no hito and vagabond are essentials.
Ah what do i know, i think naruto is underrated.
Nobody gives a shit what you're sick of
Merit is greater than novelty
Read a fucking book for once jesus
they're formative for me because I watched it in my formative, preteen years, and they were on toonami. Mostly they gave me my love for historical fiction, and a healthy appreciation for the "asshole with a heart of gold" archetype. Trust & betrayal is just... so good. But nothing beats out Ghost in the Shell 95.
>you can't possibly like both literature and visual mediums!
ok, dipshit, calm your tits. I read plenty.
still cringe bro, no offense but you were probably bullied too hard on a or something and thought you could say that shit here with no problems, its all fun and shit, like in gundam wing when heero was gonna sacrifice himself but zechs stepped in and did it himself was great and stuff, but thats like i said, just fun stuff, books like confessions of a mask and some others were a million times more important to me, again, you are on Yea Forums so dont get too mad when people shit on you for the stuff you say, especially the use of spoilers was a 10/10 touch, gonna make me smile trough the weekend
bruh dere was a tournament arc and shiet! evil and good bro! kek
that's mean. I was enjoying our chat. why'd you have to be like that?
honestly if you didnt put spoilers i wouldnt have minded, just added that extra layer of cringe that i couldnt contain myself, ultimately, they all had the same effect, yes, brotherhood was better written by a bit, but when frieza was defeated and begging it was basically the same as envy etc, same with certain sacrifices, the only real part i really enjoyed was greeds character purely because i did not expect it would go that way with him, you should probably rewatch it, because i rewatched it in my twenties and it was kinda boring and you realize most characters are not well written at all, very one dimensional and they dont get developed at all really in most if not all cases, its gets kinda cringe even, everyone has some sort of gay ass trauma that get used as an excuse to show the character as a subsitute for actual character development, oh and that reminds me, i have not wacthed an anime in years but vinland saga got an adaptation, should watch that
again, fun stuff, but compared to the brothers karamazov fma is a -5/10 to dostos 10/10, are you trying to get what i mean? most people here are not 10 years old anymore, you cant advise someone who read tons of great works in his twenties to watch something as fma or yu yu hakusho, its fun, sure, but its just not "there" anymore, know what i mean? you should keep that for other places, sorry
They're not the same thing, though. Brothers Karamazov and FMA have two completely different metrics by which they're measured by. One's lit, the other visual. In a good animation, there are nuances that can't be put into words. Long stretches of silence in a Hayao Miyazaki film have an emotional weight that can't be replicated in words. What about that scene in GitS 95 where the major wordlessly contemplates her existence in the water? Imagine that scene in words. It would be ruined. Or the way that you watch Ed grow up episode by episode so gradually that you don't notice until it's already happened? Why can't someone appreciate the qualities of both mediums? Why do you have to put one down? I take all artistic mediums seriously. Why should I have to stop liking one, huh? I thought we were having a nice conversation, and then you just say this shit. You didn't have to. You could have just said nothing instead of making me feel like a complete fucking dumbass.
Ay uh, none of those were me. The last post I made was But yeah, regarding the anime you mentioned earlier, I'll give them a shot whenever I can. Added them to the list.
I haven't watched anime since Akame ga Kill, because I thought the ending was retarded and was a mad hoe.
im not that guy lel, like i said, in fma everyone has some death in his past that caused a trauma that get used all show long with no character development wich makes it really boring from a Yea Forums standpoint, ed cries about being short (good blackpill for the incels desu) and not drinking milk and crying about his body for 40 episodes lol, above all the manga of both that and yu yu hakusho is better, i think there is around 10-15 anime actually worth consuming where the rest is fun filter stuff
the main difference here is that i personally do not consider literature an artistic medium, as a kid i enjoyed anime for what it is but i cannot anymore as im too degraded (its a compliment for you), hey man, enjoy it, you do you but leave the cringy spoilers behind, nobody gives a shit what a character in yu yu hakusho does here
OP here can you tell me the anime you consider worth it? Curious to see how many I already know about or have on the watch list I've accumulated over the years.
Have him evolve, you can keep the story similar at first then change or keep it similar entirely and just have it be a piece on some subject
Oh, uh. Sorry, thanks? Those are good, but the movies are the best of them. There are a lot of anime with shitty endings. Absolutely nothing is worse than the ending to Dead Zone the series. The last season is the worst fuckin' thing I've ever seen. I've never seen Akame ga Kill, so I can't really weigh in.
Ok, I guess. It is true that the forced slapstick is annoying, but sometimes you have to take the bad with the good. Using the above example, Dead Zone had a lot of problems (so, so many problems), but it was worth it because the relationship between the characters was so fucking good. Until it was abruptly canceled after season five and there definitely wasn't ever a season six. I don't really know what to say now.
Why don't you think lit is an artistic medium?
i have to leave for work now and i havent dealth with anime in years, i mentioned the 4 part ova trust and betrayal of kenshin, flanders no inu (movie) but im a bit biased as im from flanders, those 2 i would reccomend to everyone, from a non Yea Forums point you could add bebop, evangelion, flcl, nhk, sword of the stranger, hell even gundam wing was hilarious in its own way, but it has really been years and i dont have the time to dig my past, i think there are other good ones but unfortunately i lost my passion for it around my 16th age, i do not know in the meantime if stuff like kokou no hito or vagabond got anime adaptations but i enjoyed that alot as a manga, there are some stuff that are unique in their own way, in a "artistic" way you could say, like shirokuma cafe etc, i could also remeber some in rose tinted glasses and might not be as good to watch now, for example ouran highschool host club was also "fun", most anime is just "fun" thats about it desu
above all stuff that try to do their own thing and not go over the top on like, extreme trauma in all characters (fma), the power of friendship (naruto) can be a fun time waster
>Why don't you think lit is an artistic medium?
i dont know, i just dont think it is, most of the shit i read just makes me more numb as i go on living, is that what art is? i could think about it more but i have to wageslave for mister shekelstein now
>just makes me more numb as i go on living, is that what art is?
it's pretty much the exact opposite of what art is, actually. What kind of books do you read? What are things that make you feel good?
jesus christ bro, this is cringe... please read a book for once in your life and learn the proper meaning of a 'tragic' character.
i'm glad i followed the memes and read the greeks. skipping the greeks makes you truly mentally retarded i swear
who said I skipped the greeks?
