Tranny is a slur, and pretty offensive to transgender people. I would suggest at least reading some into how it is to be transgender if you want to write a transgender character. Maybe even talk to someone who is trans, so you have an idea what they go through. Yea Forums is not a good source for this, actually read an article or two about it.
Names you can call them are transgender people, trans people, trans woman (for someone who is male to female), trans man (for someone who is female to male).

Like I said before, this site is not a good representation for transgender people. People who are trans and go to Yea Forums have probably always been on Yea Forums, and are used to words like faggot, nigger, tranny etc. It still is a derogatory term, and even though some people wanted to reclaim it (try to use it so much that it gets a positive meaning), the majority of trans people do not want to be called a tranny.
Go to the wiki page on the word tranny, that might give you a little bit of information about the use of the word.
Another problem with the word tranny is that it is an umbrella term for transgender, transvestite and cross-dresser, which are all different categories.
Transgender is someone who is not the gender they are born with.
Transvestite is someone who pretends they are from the other gender because it is sexually stimulating for them. It is a kink/fetish for them. They are not transgender, and have no feelings like they are another gender.
Cross dresser is someone who like wearing clothes of the other gender, just because they like the aesthetic of it, without feeling like they are the other gender.
