Hasanbug has a point here. "Debate" is mostly just a slightly more brainy form of talk-host shows nowadays, reading and off-record conversations with intelligent friends and rivals is where it's at.

I remember a few years ago a lot of them were passing a study around which said something about conversations being useless and not really changing peoples minds. It was really dumb because all it was really saying was that people don't change their deeply held beliefs after a single conversation regardless of how strong the opposing arguments are, but a lot of people who should know better took it to mean that nobody changes their mind no matter how many conversations they have which is obviously false. Christian apologists are in the business of changing peoples deeply held beliefs and they recognize that it's a process, that it's something which takes place over a long period of time so the study wasn't anything new to them.

Maybe the study has nothing to do with it but that's about the time I noticed the left disengaging with any sort of real conversation with people they disagree with. To them the only valid option is to silence or intimidate since conversation isn't going to change anyone mind. And of course, the violence from them has been ramping up since.
