Do you think you'de enjoy making decent quality video essays on anime and prostitution?

The only books to drive suicide away will be spiritual in nature. Anyone that claims material existence on earth without any possibility for transcendence is somehow good is beyond deluded. It's just one distraction after another once you really get down to the essence of all action not oriented for some transcendent value.

>I'm depressed and don't see any purpose to life without my sky daddy so I'm going to project this nihilism on atheists who are probably happy and have more of a purpose in life than I do

>I can't believe in any of that

Deuteronomy 4:29
>But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Proverbs 8:17
>I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.
Jeremiah 29:13
>You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Matthew 7:7-8
>Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Isaiah 55:6-7
>Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Lamentations 3:25
>The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
James 4:8
>Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
2 Chronicles 7:14
>If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Matthew 5:6
>Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Atheists are far more likely to commit suicide, especially when controlling for factors that may influence suicide.

not my diary desu

i'd argue that books that are medical in nature have a chance too.

OP should read Casanova's diary (3500 page autobiography)

>ignoring that sky daddy literally tortures you for eternity if you kill yourself

What’s your point? What does that had to do with the fact that atheists are more miserable than theists on average and that suicides are largely committed by atheists?

>I have no idea why atheists, who are not under the threat of hell, kill themselves more often than theists, who do

So now you’re implying that Christians don’t commit suicide because they don’t want to go to Hell. But Christians are still far less likely to be depressed, think that the world is meaningless, and think about suicide. They only need to remember their faith, and their suffering goes away. I don’t think good Christians ever get into these depressive states, anyway. When I was an atheist, I was nihilistic, depressed, thinking and fantasizing about suicide fairly often, but all that went away after I started the path to becoming a Christian. So when you see people recommending the Bible for depressed anons, know that many of these people know what it’s like to be depressed, and how Christianity saved them.

>But Christians are still far less likely to be depressed, think that the world is meaningless, and think about suicide.
And people that don't go to a hospital or see a doctor are far less likely to be seriously ill. People wearing jumpers are far less likely to be in the summer months.

I would try the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Or maybe one of the dragonlance novels. Something more light-hearted

Is this the only way you know how to argue? Very childish and annoying

What the fuck are you arguing for?

>not wanting to be punished by sky daddy
You sound like you’ve been a bad girl who neglects consequences. Kys

it's reddit snark, an entire mode of communication based around being unpleasantly sarcastic and passive aggressive for no reason, not even in response to someone being rude to them. It's just automatically how they express themselves

fourth one isn't me. pay attention to capitalization
>Very childish
is this the only way you know how to respond to atheism?
nope, just really like the phrase
>Kys
but then that will prove their point

>is this the only way you know how to respond to atheism?
Are you seriously comparing your awful posts to atheism? As if you represent the brightest of the atheists or something? It doesn’t matter what the topic is about, I’m not going to keep seriously discussing and putting forth arguments when the other person is being intolerable. If atheists didn’t typically act this way, they would be treated a lot better. You people only further the fedora stereotypes and then complain that they exist.

god, you're insufferable

The Holy Bible, get saved by Jesus Christ! Bless our Lord!

No no, he's right, and the implied context of your sentimental bible quotes is meaningless. There really are large numbers of people who are simply too smart to become sincere religionists. Most of them (us) have even had pangs of wanting to from time to time, not out of any real love for god, but only out of the human desire to belong to an in-group. But we can't exactly because we know that several of the core beliefs are falsified nonsense.

I seem to remember a passage in Brothers Karamazov, it might have been right around Grand Inquisitor, but not the Inquisitor story proper. It's either Ivan or Satan himself fantasizing about being some young, naive, perfectly happy, perfectly devout peasant girl. But they can't, exactly because they are smart. And it is better to be right than it is to belong (Dostoevsky's larger project of defending Christianity and traditionalism is itself wrong, because of course it cannot possibly rest on the real, meaningful metaphysical ground which is required. Dostoevsky himself is an example of a smarter young man who went limp in later years).

A classic

>too smart to believe in God
How do you explain the existence of Christians who smarter than you?

I mean seriously, who the fuck brags about their intelligence through ACT scores?

What is “too smart?” Am I not smart enough to be religious? Serious question. And what does it mean if people with lower scores claim to be too intelligent for religion, when people like me are religious? Perhaps intelligence isn’t the issue here, but pride.

either you're responding to the wrong comment or you misread. I never said or even implied that you're "too smart"

I’m responding towho apparently thinks religion is only for idiots.

The proof if your stupidity has already thoroughly been proven, must you continue?
As a hint: Though flawed, how is IQ measured? Obviously, regular IQ tests are calibrated to average 100. Second, though, is that IQ scores are calibrated against your peers, not everyone. You could have a 120 IQ at 19 and be demonstrably dumber than a 40 year old with an IQ of 90.

Simple question: are all atheists more intelligent than all theists? Or, are the atheists who claim to be too intelligent for God smarter than all theists?

If the only thing you want out of religion is belonging, join your local book club. It's clear that you think you are above anything that isn't rigorous and falsifiable, so I hope you aren't a fan of metaphysics or philosophy in general. Matter of fact, I would also avoid fiction because nothing of value comes from the unempirical.
If you are a sincere materialist whose only reading comes in the form of research papers and historical accounts, more power to you. If not, I would ask why you accept some forms of the metaphysical, unfalsifiable, and unempirical while openly and uncritically bashing others.

It isn’t just a want of belonging and he knows it. There are plenty of ways to find group belonging without religion in 2019.

And to continue
Did St. Augustine's and St. Thomas Aquinas' faith come from a place of ignorance, or from critical and thoughtful examination? Were they simply too stupid to deny God's existance?
I doubt you've read them well enough to answer my question. But I hope you realize that your atheism is just as blind and baseless as the faith of the peasent girl you place youself so far above.

My point is that he and other intellectuals criticize religious texts on different bases than they criticize other forms of literature. If he can't find value in the bible, be it in terms of metaphysics, phiolophy, or otherwise, that's on him. Those are the main takeaways of people that earnestly study the bible, which is just as unfalsifiable as the work of any philosopher.
