Lmao, he was a Christian, you retard. If you're gonna count Tolstoy as an atheist because he went through an atheist phase early on in life, then Nietzsche can be counted as a Christian since he went through a Christian phase early on in life.

not a single one of those other than MAYBE schopenhauer was an atheist

Wittgenstein specifically said that he could never respect a being such as God and that religious language didn’t aim at telling truths about the world but only at expressing one’s attitude towards life.

Why do these threads even get attention? It's not hard to cherry pick in this way. Just wish there was a less retarded place than Yea Forums I could browse for actual discussions.

>famous atheists
>list half full of people who loathed atheism and rued the death of christianity

>cherry pick
Are these not notable Christians and atheists? Can you find a Christian or atheist more notable than the ones on the list?

Adding to OP's list of notable Christians:

>Saint Augustine of Hippo
>Saint Thomas Aquinas
>Charles Dickens
>Oscar Wilde
>T. S. Eliot
>Flannery O'Connor

Martin Heidegger, Rudolf Carnap, A.J. Ayer, Gilbert Ryle, W.V.O. Quine, David K. Lewis, John Anderson, J.L. Mackie, basically every Australian philosopher except James Franklin, basically every living theoretical physicist, the list goes on.

Not at all. Who thinks of Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky when they think of notable Christians in history? Usually that honour would fall upon figures like Augustine and Luther and Calvin etc.
It's funny how dostoy is included when he would be seen as an unsaved heretic by most Christians. Also the new atheist movement isn't representative of atheism, which is just simply the statement that you are not convinced of the existence of god. One could easily cite much greater historical figures who happened to be atheists. Hume, Marx, Einstein, etc.

>the new atheist movement isn’t representative of atheism
Real atheism has never been tried!

Not sure if this was supposed to apply to "atheism" or "new atheism":
>you are not convinced of the existence of God
That's agnosticism. An atheist by definition would be fully convinced of the nonexistence of God.

Try again!

Its debatable whether Nietzsche was a total atheist or was just rebelling against a particular type of 19th century bourgeoisie Lutheranism. He also didnt seem to be biblically literate at all. Im not saying he wasnt an atheist, just that its debatable.

Then by that definition nobody would be an atheist. Even cringe meme atheists like Dawkins say that they’re not completely sure God doesn’t exist. The point is that atheists think the overall evidence supports the thesis that there is no God, theists think the opposite and agnostics simply suspend judgment. Ever wondered that maybe you couldn’t find famous atheists because your concept of atheist has an empty extension? Read Gray’s Seven Types Atheism.

>he wasn’t a pop scientist new atheist so he certainly doesn’t qualify as atheist!

Nietzsche saw the world as "we're all one" "we're all God" in his own way. He clearly did not believe in the Abrahamic God though.

Whitehead? You sure about that bro?

newton was luciferian as shit retard

Thats fine. Rejecting the Abrahamic God is not the same as being an atheist.

the atheist's "gods" (aka not really gods but their conception of the universe) are the "gods" of whitehead and spinoza.

>>James Baldwin
Lmao. Also, Kafka is the only person on your list who can be compared to the people OP listed.

Wrong

This better be bait; Plato and most other B.C. philosophers were theists

You do realize appeal to authority is a logical fallacy, right?

Guenon would punch you in the face for saying that.

Not OP and not a theist, but that’s a silly point in this context. He’s advancing no arguments so he can’t be guilty of committing any fallacy. Btw, appeal to authority is an informal fallacy when the people you reference as authoritative are not so, but it’s perfectly admissible if you reference actual experts on the subject (e.g. a respected biologist for evolutionary theory)

>Nietzsche
>He also didnt seem to be biblically literate at all
Are you some kind of a moron? Nietzsche was a pastor's son. His schoolmates nicknamed him "Little Pastor", because he fucking memorized by heart whole chapters from Bible.

>Shakespeare was a real christian

What's the point of calling a non-conscious goalless nihilistically chaotic process a god? Nietzsche downright stated that the concept "god" is basically a linguistical creation.

This is like saying Shakespeare supported the monarchy. They each "supported" their patrons to the extent that was necessary but it had almost no effect on their work. The comedy is "about" hell but if you read it it doesn't feel like he was deeply involved with Catholicism.

You're kidding right? Purgatory is almost an exclusively Catholic thing.

And all of them are cucks.

That list is lacking Borges, Beckett, Joyce, Kafka, Keats, Lovecraft, Nabokov ,Pessoa, Stendhal and Turgenev ;)

>yes they were really atheists
No. Beckett, Kafka, and Lovecraft were agnostics.

What a bunch of shitters

Kafka was agnostic, retard.

Cringe

>They each "supported" their patrons to the extent that was necessary but it had almost no effect on their work. The comedy is "about" hell but if you read it it doesn't feel like he was deeply involved with Catholicism.
Jesus Christ... no joke intended.

Rimbaud reverted to Islam.

>A Westerner converting to Islam
That's peak cuckoldry.

Lovecraft was an atheist/agnostic. He was raised in a Christian household but rejected Christianity when he was a child (he began openly questioning the existence of God when he was 5) and became a Roman-style pagan. Then around the age of 12 or 13, he realized paganism is a hoax and became an atheist, and remained an atheist for the rest of his life. He did admit that some sort of God may exist, but he believed it was highly unlikely. Here, I'll let him do the talking;

>"All I say is that I think it is damned unlikely that anything like a central cosmic will, a spirit world, or an eternal survival of personality exist. They are the most preposterous and unjustified of all the guesses which can be made about the universe, and I am not enough of a hairsplitter to pretend that I don't regard them as arrant and negligible moonshine. In theory, I am an agnostic, but pending the appearance of radical evidence I must be classed, practically and provisionally, as an atheist." - H. P. Lovecraft, 1932

>I am an agnostic, but pending the appearance of radical evidence I must be classed, practically and provisionally, as an atheist
Sounds like an agnostic.
> and became a Roman-style pagan.
what a fucking weird guy? wtf was his problem? lmao

Fuck off Mindy and delete your instagram page. You did nothing but ruin this board by bringing normies here and also reading pomo doesn't make you smarter. You should've stopped at Kierkegaard.

The only good comment here

>An atheist by definition would be fully convinced of the nonexistence of God.
A(without) theist(belief in a theistic god). Atheist: someone who does not believe in a theistic god.
No reasonable man believes in the nonexistence of something unless it can be shown to be contradictory. An atheist is someone who holds that there isn't sufficient evidence for the existence of a theistic god, and therefore he does not believe that one exists just as he does not believe that undetectable unicorns exist.
Not believing in the existence of something is not the same as believing in the nonexistence of something.

Artaud, Bataille, Kafka, Rimbaud and Derrida all had a complex relationship with religion, I couldn't call any of them full atheists.
most of the rest were either edgelords or fedoras with a simplistic view of religion

Are you fucking stupid?

Wittgenstein literally believed in the resurrection. Like the dude may have tried to kill metaphysics but he was more orthodox than half of the actual Christians on the original list.

Not at all trolling. The Laws says there is no necessity or God as the multitude understands him, but only contingency, and God is identical to his creation etc. which is either blatantly incoherent or the concealment of an atheistic philosophy. Read some Strauss and Farabi too.

I might be in love.

His father died wheb he was quite young, and so he probably didnt absorb anything from him. And read any of his works. He had at best a superficial understanding of the Bible. It comes through in his analysis. Someone as gifted philosophically as him wouldn't have made the arguments about Christianity he did if he was aware of the language in the Bible.

NOBODY GIVES A FUCK YOU ABSOLUTE RETARD. But also daily reminder: the Catholic Church is literally a safehaven for pedophiles, pederasts, homosexuals, rapists, etc.
