yes, but not because of the picture in the OP. that looks kind of comfy to me.

both are just different sides of the same hellish coin

>comfy
How sheltered can you be?

Absolutely this. The past few centuries have been paving the way for human cattle. Complete urbanization, bugs and plant based meals, even higher populations, generally dumber populace, and even higher amounts of consumerism. Might as well kill me, because I'll do it myself soon

It's real but the camera angle was chosen to accentuate the contrast.

The Technological Society by Jacques Ellul

>How sheltered can you be?
i am not sure if it counts as sheltered, but i have never lived in a large, densely populated city.

the way i keep myself going in this corporate driven hell is just knowing that the more i consume the sooner we the planet is kick us fleas off it

Not sheltered, just inexperienced

Pay no heed to the retarded undertitle added by the publisher.

Yeah, maybe. But I don't have the willpower to overcome my inherent hate of these circumstances and actually make enough to consume. Basically, I get to experience the end without getting any of the "benefits." All will be right in the end... I hope

What are some examples of stuff going on in China? It's hard to tell just from second hand stories

Read alll the way to Marx and then read some bataille then read #Accelerate than go for it man
You have to remember Land studied philosophy long enough to be a professor and was most likely heavily studying all the continental philosophers before going on his own route. His thesis on Heidegger was written in 1987 which was when he was 25. So basically if you really really want to understand it you can prob get away with just getting to Marx with good understanding of Kant and then go from there. I'm not a big advocate of "start with x before you get to y" because its not always fairly accurate, just go read #accelerate and pick and choose where you wanna go from there

>Never lived in a large, densely populated city.
You aren't missing out on much besides people refusing to look at you and dirty sidewalks

Macau has only been a part of the PRC for literally 20 years. All that buildup was from Portuguese capitalism

It's real

Why do redditors and homosexuals say this? My guess is they're such bugmen that they cannot discern between baser and higher forms of pleasure. Non-sexual pleasure and sense of aesthetic confuses them.

the strip mall's main issues are awful architecture, disposable construction, a need for parking out front because they're made mostly in car-centric american cities, and a general lack of engagement with the city (usually because the city is ill-equipped to engage with it). They're a symptom of the same cold-war building philosophies that gave us cookie-cutter suburbs, gaudy mcmansions, insular white-tile shopping malls, and subdivisions that put in curvy roads and cul-de-sacs just so it feels less "urban": a romanticism for an 'american dream' that was only ever a marketing move for real estate companies, and a self-fulfilling prophecy wherein urban planners assumed everyone would prefer to drive everywhere. the asian pop-up megalopolises have plenty of issues, but they'll prove less intractable than the cancer american cities have felt metastasizing for the last half century.

Nice little summary.
Car culture is fucking retarded. It is a shifty lifestyle based around watching tv

reminder that everyone who came up in the cold war has never known a society that was designed around anything more interactive than listening to mass media on network television and driving to the nearest mcdonalds in between 9-5 work shifts. television coincided with white-flight suburbanism to emasculate the american citizen and prevent them from having any interface with their own society except their jobs, wherein their influence over their own workplace was steadily eroded by deregulation, and these people didn't even protest that. Then they tell you that a smartphone prevents you from interacting with your society, when the internet is less antisocial than any aspect of society they've ever experienced.

those are actually extremely predatory loanshark hellholes where they troll poor people with barely enough money to pay rent into paying them 50% of their income for the next 10 years. they are constantly legislated against but somehow still legal in the US in le current year.

>Clean water comes from the faucet for fractions of a penny.
Actually, a lot of water service lines in the US are still made of lead, which is leaching into the water supply due to poor infrastructure maintenance and gov'ts passing the buck when it comes to who is supposed to replace them.

Sales pitch:
>This was, hands down, one of the three most vile books I've ever read in my life. It's not science fiction or Chinoiserie, as it pretends to be; it's torture-porn of the very nastiest sort. Apart from that, it's quite poorly written, and as science fiction it's grade "Z" at best.
>An absolutely disgusting book. I feel as if the author tried to molest me. I've never burned or destroyed a book in my life, and I can't bring myself to start now, but I will not continue reading it and I will never open its pages again.
>I wish I could give negative stars, because this book deserves thousands of them. Only Jack Chalker and one of the authors of the "Wild Cards" series have ever equalled the utter vileness of Chung Kuo.
>If you like seeing "heroes" discover bizarre new ways to torture and rape innocent characters, then Chung Kuo is the book for you. If so, I hope you'll seek therapy and stay away from children. The only positive thing I can say about the book is that the writing and characters are all so flat and lifeless that the details of the book didn't linger in my memory for too long. Except that even one SECOND was too long to have some of that crap in my head!

What if I fetishize America like you do Japan? I always found the suburbs quaint and you are always within close proximity to friends and stores. Growing up in a rural area I was always jealous of subburbfags

Attached: 1488830646-gettyimages-154903704.jpg (2000x1000, 295K)

>close proximity to friends and stores
A square mile of suburbs like these house as many people as one decent urban apartment complex. Nothing is in close proximity except shitty boomer neighbors.

>communal and lively
>not decrepit, structurally unsound, filthy, loud, foul-smelling dangerous and expensive in terms of upkeep
scenery aside, you just sound ungrateful
you think any poor chinese city dweller wouldn't want their own house and yard? what's more do you think any of them would care about shit 'all looking the same?'

>oh no! access to material goods
hello 14 year old

if you lived in one of those crowded cities you'd be bitching about your thousands of shifty and gross neighbors and the smell of hustle and bustle every day

Ellul does not get enough love on this board

>OMG I thought I was the only one who shits on suburbia and idealizes urban life!!

So you can either drive from your spacious suburban home in a nice safe neighborhood (but o gawd it’s so ugly from an airplane) to a clean well-lit air-conditioned store, or you can schlep your overpriced groceries down to the subway to wait in the foil and stagnating air for a rickety train to come screeching into the station, shove your way in among 1000 perspiring brown people, and then trudge to your overpriced sardine tin of an apartment, stepping over the urine soaked crackhead along the way, to finally collapse on your shitty ikea couch and comfort yourself with thoughts about how “authentic” your urban lifestyle is.

kys faggot

Why on earth would you WANT to be in close proximity with thousands and thousands of strangers. The whole “city as collection of villages” thing is romanticized bulllshit. Cities have always been alienating anonymous hellscapes

For me, it’s Shenzhen.

What is not empty?

This is sad. So damn sad. Look at this houses going on and on, one after the other. No communal centre in sight, no little shops, no sidewalk life, no point of interest. The front lawns are useless and there just as an example of "AN NATURE", even little kids can't play there. There is nothing to do in such a place but remain inside the room and watch Netflix. This is hell. The Japanese picture, even with its crazy wires and stuff, at least hints at Life. There are people living, working and traversing that urban space.

This is what peak Americana looks like. I can smell the burger-filled stench emanating from the depths of your guts into the common breathable air. The amount of mediocrity it takes to write such a paragraph practically means you'll be able to succeed in your white collar job and have erectile dysfunction in your late 40s, which is why your lovely wife will be calling the plumber 10 times a week.

Yeah
Considering Ted gets mentioned here quite a lot I would've assumed people would've picked up on his frequent referencing of Ellul and read his works, he has some great stuff

Struggle and successful personal liberation

obviously knows nothing about raising kids or living in the city; does not even warrant a well thought out response
stupid ad hominem shit and baseless projection

wow, I'm really convinced by anti-suburb fags, and to think this whole time I thought I liked not walking over pis-soaked homeless people and avoiding prying gazes of likely muggers in high crime areas, good thing now I know about the soullessness of netflix and how having a front and backyard is actually super uncool. thanks children!

You think that's hell? That's just a dangerous playground

Well, I live in a city a fraction of the size but have visited ones like that pic. I am trying my best to escape

You elitist pig. The entire third world would kill all their offspring just for the chance to leave their vibrant urban hovels and live in that house you’re shitting on. In fact, most of the third world is trying to do just that.

What’s wrong with having a nice spacious house and a bit of green space all your own?

As far as the whole Netflix thing goes, your average urbanite scum goes home every night to watch Netflix too, they just do it in a 200 sq ft overpriced shithole they’re renting. The suburbanite probably owns their home. So guess what, in 20 years their mortgage is going to exactly the same. What’s your rent going to be by then?

oh god the 'noble savage' outlook in this is too rich
you sincerely should thank your mommy and daddy for working hard and being able to afford the nice house you bitch about where you probably have your own fucking room you insipid shitstain

fun fact when I was a student studying I got jumped on by 4 dudes exploring the lower cities pictured here, I tried negotiating them to just take my wallet but they were speaking some completely incomprehensible slang, something equivalent to niggerspeak. Anyways they took my shoes, belt, wallet and for some reason pulled my pants down which made me think they were gonna rape me. Never visited again

>go to China

>get gangraped by literal gangmembers

haha wow

I agree with you regarding the stultifying, dehumanizing aspects of modernity, but it seems like you’re minimizing the drudgery, filth, disease, and discomfort of the past in order to romanticize some perceived “authenticity” that existed before our time. The truth is, all ages are shitty in their own unique way— but at least ours has toilets and air conditioning.

I hope this incel tier shit is actually a shitpost. You people are so dramatic while having no scope of history.

Yes, not wanting to live like a cow in a slaughterhouse is incel tier

Kowloon Walled City is a cool phenomenon though. A block in limbo between Chinese and British rule in Hong Kong. Neither wanting responsibility for the place, ruled by the triads.

Probably not a good place to live but man the photo's from the place are cool.

Since there were only a couple of blocks and no room for expansion as the outside was defended by the Chinese or British forces it ended up as the single most densely populated place on earth. With over 50,000 people living there.
