Nihilism is the fundamental problem, the perspective that any truly curious mind will venture into at some point. It is not a place to wallow, and most healthy people actually cannot sit in it for long. 15 minutes go by and you find yourself some new distraction and forget about your little melodramatic depressed episode. It's easy to put off "nihilism" this way, but the challenge is to conquer it, which may have as base an answer as "it's up to you to figure out how to do so."
Any attempt at a universal prescription against it very quickly runs into a circular conversation so well-worn it's become a canyon.
One answer to nihilism, then, may simply be to not be too curious. Keep your nose to the dirt, don't try to zoom out to much. You are not a zoomed-out creature. There's nothing in that perspective for you. What can nourish you is figuring out how to act under the constraints you find yourself with to maximize whatever you wish, as "insignificant" as you like.
The conversation gets too tired too quickly now. Maybe the real answer is "stop being a faggot"

One thing I don't understand is why nihilism (not depression, which may be one emotional response to it) is almost never encountered or explicitly discussed in movies, mainstream media, and generally art. One has to dig into higher art/philosophy forms to find it. It's like civilization is in constant denial and makes massive uses of psychological defenses of removal. But why can't there be a more open discussion? Why can't there be an all human meaning to life that is born from the ashes of nihilism?

All being meaningless does not equal all being hopeless. Its just a way of putting this in their correct perspective. All humans exist in a very limited space and from a cosmological perspective the whole human race stays motionless in respect to the vast distances of nothing that surround us. Its a logical conclusion that this passing phenomena we experience as "life" or in being (dasein) ultimately born out of pure chance is void of any meaning more than the meta relation of man to himself.

The true wisdom lies in the realization that life doesn't require a meaning, whether it has one or not. The part of your brain that craves purpose is an evolutionary newcomer, shaped by environmental pressure out of the necessity of forethought and long-term planning skills.
