Daniel Dannett is the greatest philosopher of the 20th and 21st centuries.
>gets ten billion upvotes

>Kierkegaard isn’t a philosopher

fuck that guy his arguments on consciousness sound like a 5 year old trying to sound deep

fucking incoherent rambling

So I was reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy the other day and it got me to thinking...

In which reddit discusses slavery

because it used to be a default subreddit

Nietzsche is definitely my favorite philosopher. I haven't read too much of him first hand, but I watched a cuck philosophy video on him that I really liked. Controversial opinion, but in 2019 it's no longer really necessary to engage with some of these musty old primary sources directly. There are so many valuable resources online, from video essays to discussion forums like this one, that I think you can get a pretty good education on a philosopher without having to trudge through their (often longwinded and boring) books. Obviously this is less acceptable for academic work, but for me it does just fine :)

lmao the absolute state of Yea Forums to think they can look down on any other online community.

Your impression of a redditor is uncanny...almost suspiciously so

This

I've been a computer geek my whole life and I never thought something as subjective as philosophy could appeal to me, but I took a class last year in "the philosophy of game of thrones" and it BLEW MY MIND! Now I want to start exploring more: who are some real life philosophers that are as wise as Tyrion?

Based. I’m very close to quitting Yea Forums, I’m realizing now that most of you are autistic incels

I see a lot of reddit screenshots on /pol/, what can I say

please do

Hi all, new here, I'm not a professional philosopher, but I've always considered myself a deep thinker, and I was wondering if this has ever been posted before? I was thinking about "morality" and I realized we have no idea what that even means. Churches and politicians tell you how things SHOULD be, but nobody ever talks about how the world actually IS. Its like we're talking about two different things, what we do, and what we ought to do. Seems like we should stop focusing on the moralizing and focus more on what we can know empirically. Anyway, this is my rant, just wanted to know what fellow redditors think?

> Equality of opportunity means "everyone gets to take the test.", equality of outcome means "everyone passes".
> -4 points
what did they mean by this? seems like an accurate simplification

Ahoy matey, welcome aboard! You sound really deep, if you hadn't said you weren't a professional philosopher I would totally have assumed you were (I'm a published analytic philosopher and you sound *way* smarter than me)

But I think it's important to remember that while morality can be Bad, because it makes people feel bad for masturbating ten times a day to "sickening" "depraved" "illegal" pornography, it can also be Good because it stops people from owning slaves and using hurtful language.

So I think it's important to get your morals from the Correct Authorities. Church and politics BAD, scientists and journalists GOOD.

Fresh off the boat, from reddit, kid? heh I remember when I was just like you. Braindead. Lemme give you a tip so you can make it in this cyber sanctuary: never make jokes like that. You got no reputation here, you got no name, you got jackshit here. It's survival of the fittest and you ain't gonna survive long on Yea Forums by saying stupid jokes that your little hugbox cuntsucking reddit friends would upboat. None of that here. You don't upboat. You don't downboat. This ain't reddit, kid. This is Yea Forums. We have REAL intellectual discussion, something I don't think you're all that familiar with. You don't like it, you can hit the bricks on over to imgur, you daily show watching son of a bitch. I hope you don't tho. I hope you stay here and learn our ways. Things are different here, unlike any other place that the light of internet pop culture reaches. You can be anything here. Me ? heh, I'm a judge.. this place.... this place has a lot to offer... heh you'll see, kid . . . that is if you can handle it...

>if you hadn't said you weren't a professional philosopher I would totally have assumed you were (I'm a published analytic philosopher and you sound *way* smarter than me)
fucking lol
are you guys copypasting these?

Way better than r/philosophy

I find empiricism problematic. I believe morality must come before empiricism as long as morality is set on scientific knowledge and not religious superstition from the time we killed those who were left-handed. It's very important that knowledge should come after the the analysis of the social implications of such knowledge, as to do not favour structures of power in detriment of desinfranchised minorities (which have always had their voices censored in academia and the press).

I'm sorry if I'm being too abstract. But take the 'men have more physical strength than women' stance which has been copied and pasted on every children's textbook from an early age. It is a scientific truth that men have more physical strength than women, yet we must not make that statement and spread that knowledge because it does a massive desservice to women worldwide who are struggling every day to be seen as equals to men. Abiding to scientific truth in this case is equal to spreading sexism and oppression.

tl;dr: Science is cool, but it should not be a weapon to maintain hierarchies.

Well, the actual book series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire" (there's a fair bit to chew on philosophically in the title alone!). I recommend you start there. GRRM's writing is a good deal more thought provoking than the show, he basically out-Machiavelli's Machiavelli, he out-Nietzsche's the Neetsch, if you catch my drift *wink* *wink*? You don't? No worries, I'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have about the series, I've read it six times over! I'm also a Phd in philosophy of mind, by the way.

Hi! I agree completely, theres no reason to use something as great as science to enforce the same backwards morality as bronze age goat herders, we can (and should!) do much better.

They're not even discussing slavery. They're nutting out the irrelevant hypocrisies of a dead guy. It's not philosophy, it's history of philosophy.

Fucking brainlets.

Um sweetie, all the major philosophical questions have been settled by science and academia. All we can do now is cite our sources. Arguing about philosophy is pointless. Just read some physics textbooks and academic journals.

this is pasta right?

holy shit you faggots have proved, with this thread, that not only are you idiots but you're complacent idiots too
bad in a different way

>Fuck off TURF scum

So I read this one article on why saying yes is NOT consent and it really got me thinking..... I think I agree. There needs to be more. There are so many dynamics of power all gripped by the man in a patriarchal society that a woman is ALMOST always forced. We still have long ways to go ladies. #resist

Red pandas! Haha! Pandas that are red! No, none of us have a philosophy degree, why do you ask?

is this a real reddit post

>just downloaded a picture of this book cover, what I am in for?
only accurate one

I only come here when other people are looking over my shoulder in the hopes that seeing all the book covers and philosopher photographs in the catalogue will impress them

Not making this up by the way.
reddit.com/r/philosophy/comments/ajdo32/against_yes_means_yes_a_new_model_of_sexual/

I don't think anyone is going to be impressed by images of cartoon frogs and instathots

that's what i found so recently i switched to /tg/ or Yea Forums
sorry for bad typing, i'm wiping my ares

It helps no one to be reductive.

>just downloaded a picture of this book cover, what I am in for?
i do that
