I reminds me of a tinder date.
I was spending a few days in Paris. First day, first tinder date, we fell in love immediately and it was the beginning of a nice 6-months story. Third day, third tinder date, we didn't exactly fall in love but it was still pretty cool and we ended up dating each other for 4 or 5 years.
Second day, second date. We were about to meet in half an hour and I absolutely needed to take a shit. I remember wandering around Notre-Dame, searching for a decent place, but the public toilets were overcrowded with tourists. Huge queue outside, much longer than Les Misérables. I did feel miserable actually, because my date would be completely ruined unless I could find a place to poo. Oddly enough, I can't remember if I could actually find it or not - but date sucked so bad it didn't make a difference. Overpretentious girl full of tattoos, great body and butterface. For some reason she immediately hated me, which made me feel bad, but at the same time I was still thinking about the girl from the other day, so that was alright. Was I relieved when she left since I could finally take my shit? Hell, that would make sense. But it's probably a cheap excuse. More likely, I wasn't enough of a stupid confident tattooed pseud for her to care. So, yeah, Notre-Dame, I will always remember you, for this day, right between two unforgettable dates, the only thing worth remembering was me wandering around you looking for public toilets.

Before they died, the fat bald man decided in his head that Jean-Claude had somehow managed to influence the destruction of the building so that the spire fell right on top of his bald head. Then he died gruesomely and his body and the body of his wife's were unidentifiable so they didn't get sent back to America.

So, Notre Dame is on fire - a treasured relic from the golden days of Western Civilization. It points to the realization that with any threat to the survival of our world, our newer structures of edifice may not be the most significant losses. Not only are we squandering our current resources in society as a whole (human or otherwise), but our current state of society is an insult to the vision of the past. It is almost insulting of us to claim their achievements as our heritage when we ourselves have been brought so low on our knees, and don't seem to be making any indications that we are willing to change it. Not only this, but we have abandoned that vision entirely... and what has taken its place? What are the visions that we now entertain? What are the modern "cathedrals" of our values?

Monday happened as usual, I woke up and got out of bed, turned on my laptop to start with my 5 am shift. Even as an omen, and even with Easter only days away, I imagine most find the imagery of an European capital on fire worse than a cathedral on fire.

There's definite truth to the idea that these images are burning in what I'd describe as a kind of 'fabric conscience' of society. Some hyperspace where collective perceptions are built. I wouldn't say there's any rhyme or reason to these things, but they definitely fit into a greater cosmological order, beyond our understanding. It's just another by-product of our psychic war with Nature and Reality. We can try and order the world, but eventually everything will get burned down.

This is devastating. But it can be good for Europe. I can promise you, the people of France will want to rebuild it. The political right wing will certainly want that. This will be something they will hopefully completely agree on. I can't think of a single faction in France that would not want to rebuild it. I'm pretty sure the political left wing would want that too. It will be such a popular sentiment in France that anybody running in opposition to it would be completely destroyed. And then we get restarted having to think and apply our modern techniques into creating something beautiful and worthy of a decent civilization, who knows? Maybe we get a taste for it again, and maybe we see new ones even more magnificent.

People on the twitter feed I've been refreshing over the past couple hours keep talking about how "800 years of history is being lost," but history is being lost all the time and we only notice it when it happens in such an obvious way. The fact that just as many people are talking about Disney's Quasimodo (not even the original character) is one sign of this.
Were always in the process of collectively forgetting and losing things in the most general sense possible. The symbolic value of the Notre Dame that burnt down today is so different from that of the building that was completed in the 13th century that you might as well consider them separate buildings. In the last couple decades Notre Dame has attracted more tourists than worshipers. The destruction of the cathedral was inevitable, and while it is a tragedy, I can't help but be glad it was burnt down before they could turn it into a shopping mall.
I'm sure there will be a deluge of opinion pieces and "takes" circulating the internet by this time tomorrow, and I hope something productive will come out of them. I'm not getting my hopes up, though. A medieval cathedral, particularly one as famous as Notre Dame, is irreplaceable. I don't think there are many people today capable of replacing it or even reacting to its loss in a meaningful way.
