I want an aspect of a story to reference imageboards, but I cannot decide on whether the character should be an inuit candle maker talking to wax hobbyists on their own dedicated forum or a burmese crawfish farmer shooting the breeze with other connected fishermen on an abandoned facebook page for one of their outboard motor vendors because the moderation of all the other groups included identification and potential tracking and even forfeiture of a fishermen's fickle wages by not merely the local government but increasingly a Chinese developer who sought to purge indigenous fishing from the area over the course of the next couple years for a decade-long development plan for casinos and hotels.

It's worthless writing about "online culture wars" since they change on a dime. Like the fact the subtitle of the book has Tumblr listed on it; that may have been relevant in 2017, but not 2019. Tumblr went from being one of the giga-behemoths of online culture to a ghost town during that timeframe - that's how malleable the internet is. Entrenched sites with millions upon millions of users rise, peak and all all within the span of a few years. It's something of a minor miracle (or at least oddity) that Yea Forums of all things has persisted; and even that's not quite "persistence", since the site culture changes even here too.

The incel thing is especially dumb because there are barely any of them.

Like yeah, they're awful, but the way people talk you'd think it's this massive social movement - or at least a sizeable minority. But they're such a small and pathetic subset of people that they were even ousted off of /r9k/ and re-congregated on reddit. And their subs aren't exactly booming with people.

So why are we acting like there's this massive contingency of incels lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at the pernicious sex-havers? I'm tired of boogeymen.

I think it depends on what we are talking about when we say incels.
The current time we are living is being regarded by studies as the most lonely generations. And you can literally find a lot of communities on the internet with this people that may show bitterness about it. But yeah the boogeyman of the stereotypical incel that seems like a proto terrorist that thinks its a great injustice that women arent having sex with them is tiny and absurd.
The code word has gained such a vague meaning that it can be thrown to literally anyone who laughs at a woman or claims to be lonely. Its a buzzword.

Has some pretty good insights even for oldfags and the like. The connections she makes between the '60s leftist movements, the development of critical theory on the left and the modern chan culture, and the adoption of a few key pillars of leftist thoughts from the right is all very interesting stuff that she explains quite clearly. Her motto of "the modern right is gramscian" is pretty on point.
The part where she also analyzes the unique kind of Tumblr degeneracy is also extremly interesting (of which she is extremely critical of, if you're wondering, even more so than Yea Forums desu).

I'd say it's a must for anyone that missed the critical events of the internet culture war and a very good read even for those that witnessed them.
