Only by people who haven’t read The Devils

it's not, no one has ever said that. wtf op?
The Devils (I guess you mean Demons/the Possessed) is excellent

The Adulescent is his worst novel

there are large stretches in which it feels as if dostoy is filling pages because he was broke at the time of writing and was being paid by the page, the whole section with the debtors feels so tedious
but to it's credit, ippolit is one of the best characters in literatures

I don't see why anyone would consider it his worst unless they're an atheist or something and don't have the background to understand what Dostoevsky is doing with it. Dostoevsky takes a character who is the ideal Christian and places him into modern society and in the process exposes our worlds unwillingness to "be perfect." We're not ready for Jesus to walk among us. We're so unready that if Jesus did appear we would probably destroy him.

>We're so unready that if Jesus did appear we would probably destroy him.
Isn't that we did the first time?

It isn't. The adolescent is.

It is. It's too easy to look at the people who crucified Jesus and think we would do any better.

That would be Crime and Punishment. Dislike it intensely. Ghastly rigmarole

Because nobody could bring themselves to finish Notes from Underground.

>We're so unready that if Jesus did appear we would probably destroy him
well it's basically the entire premise of the Grand Inquisitor

It’s his best and most beautiful book. The last chapters have such a dark and haunting atmosphere. Top Dostoyevsky for me along with the Dmitri chapters in TBK

this

It is Poor Folk (or people) for me. It was his first book bw

Better. It's too easy to look at the people who crucified Jesus and think we would do any better.

Only an idiot would think that.

it isn't
/thread

But which one is the best one tho

It was a bit idiotic.

For me, it's The Double. The best Dosto novel.

Where to start with Dostomeme?

The gambler is easily his worst novel, since it was written before he went insane in prison.

There's no chronological order since his books are all standalone

This

no it wasn't

The gambler (1867) was written after crime and punishment (1866). Maybe you are thinking about poor folk (1846) or the double (1846). He was in prison from 1849-1854.
