that's just based on average word length and sentence length. it's only a rough indicator for difficulty and couldn't account for things such as the benji chapter in the sound and the fury because its difficulty doesn't stem from big words and long sentences.

Could it be that it's the dialogue what's dragging all the novels down? Because I tried it with a random English essay I wrote in tenth grade (I'm ESL) and it tells me it's almost twice as hard as Ulysses

It’s interesting that there is a lot tighter grouping among the Plato translations than among the Homer ones.
Also it makes sense that the Bloom Plato is apart from the other two because it intentionally tried to be hyper literal, at the expense of good style, while the other two both tried a more balanced approach.
