Anyone got a good list of pre-Tolkien fantasy? I bought The Worm Ouroboros and Lud in the Mist this month.

Why aren't giga chads like Conan popular anymore while cucks like Kvothe and moody little fags like Kaladin are considered top tier fantasy protagonists by modern standards?
Because your average fantasy reader can relate to being friend zoned or being a miserable little bitch all the time. The authors are not trying to write good characters, they're trying to write characters that their neck beard readers can relate to.
Colton Bennett
I don't know who can genuinely read WoT today, as an adult, and enjoy it as is. You could probably excise 60% and improve it in the process.
Jayden Cook
trends. also, conan's style of sword and sorcery fantasy didn't catch on as much comparative to later fantasy works. there's also a point to be made for relative morality and edgelords.
Juan Martinez
Are the other books beside Dune that are in the Dune series worth reading?
Gormenghast, first two books are amazing. Phantastes. A Voyage to Arcturus, which is weird as fuck.
Isaiah Reyes
Overtly masculine protagonists don't seem popular anymore. Softer protagonists with massive flaws whether physical or mental seem to be all the rage now. Conan had flaws of course but he'd usually either just sneak, fight or fuck his way out of a situation.
Personally I'd like to see a new barbarian hero in the same vein as Conan gain popularity with the current fantasy fanbase but like the user above me mentioned that trend sailed a long time ago.
What if a fantasy series but written with heavy phenomenology influence

With all the Conan posting in recent threads, I've realized I've never actually read Conan. My only exposure to the character is the 1982 movie and a comic here and there. Guess I'll give it a shot.
James Fisher
Book report time! So here we have Conan and the Emerald Lotus which I've seen touted as one of the best (if not THEE best) Conan pastiches. Since I've only read REH's Conan stories and one other Conan pastiche (KEW's Road of Kings) I can only compare it to those and I must say.... it was quite good. In fact I might even say it was better than Wagner's Conan pastiche even though I prefer the darker tone and Conan's characterization in RoK, but Emerald Lotus had a constant forward motion to it with not much padding and there was simply MORE going on in this story than in Road of Kings. Also if you prefer your Sword & Sorcery to have lots of sorcery in it then I highly recommend this book. At first I didn't care for the depiction of sorcery in this novel because it felt too much like your typical epic fantasy display of sorcery, but it makes sense given the major plot point of the story (sorcerers taking a drug that makes them more powerful). Even if you're not a big Conan fan I'd still recommend this book because it's a solid and enjoyable fantasy story anyways.
MAGICAL REALISM IS JUST GENRE FICTION THAT PEOPLE ASSIGN UNNECESSARY PROFUNDITY TO THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS ENJOYABLE TO READ, BUT YOU CAN'T PRETEND IT'S SOMEHOW ELEVATED ABOVE ANY OTHER FORM OF FANTASY
Landon Reed
That's a really interesting question. I don't know any book or series that is explicitly written with phenomenology in mind but any fantasy series without a too rigid magic system does at least touch upon it. I mentioned A Voyage to Arcturus in a previous post, the book deal heavily with how the main character perceive things and how his experience and thoughts change as he rapidly develop and lose various organs.

i have the drawn german covers. i dont like the german version though. i read it when i was a kid and my english was shit. nowadays i prefer the english version of the books.
Who the fuck would data mine Yea Forums? If I want to know the demographics of the site and for some reason don't have access to data from google analytics (ie I'm not Hiro, advertisers or anyone that could simply ask Hiro) I can just get a cheap Alexa subscription and get all the data I could possibly want.
Age of the posters is simply not a thing you'd have to go through the trouble to data mine for.
She keeps winning Hugos and loves to blame white people for everything making her popular with the current mainstream fantasy crowd.
Evan Hill
Just how would a magic system revolving around phenomenology work anyway?
Parker Butler
There's a small chance the Amazon adaptation could actually be good because of this. All the teenage kino thrills, none of the endless descriptions of dresses frills.
It'll probably be shite though.
Wyatt Wilson
I might have heard of her few times, but mostly just seen her posted here. Why is she popular with mainstream? Besides virtue signaling and shit.

Is this new Larry Correia worth a read? I read Son of the Black Sword around 2015 or 2016 and thought it was pretty alright, but I've not had great luck with sequels lately.
He’s the only redpilled fabtasy author I know of. Always wanted to try his works. How alright is he? Is he at least close to good?
Xavier Ramirez
His Monster Hunter series was pretty fun read. Not sure about his fantasy stuff though. I do know that every now and then he'll go off on his blog about all the retarded shit happening in the literature world.
Damn his paintings are really nice but holy shit are they expensive. 30k dollars for one painting seems a bit too much. Is he any famous at all?
Jason Thomas
How would it not? Mind you, I'm only a pseud so I just pretend to know what phenomenology is but many more loosely defined magic systems revolve around forcing your perception of the world on the world, and in the case of a duel overcoming the mind of another to cement your image of things as reality. The world is not objective, but based on a combined consciousness that you can influence.
Josiah Cox
Any sci fi or fantasy where human sexual dimorphism is greater than normal?
So basically The Force from Star Wars when you think about it?
Caleb Cruz
That's the direct opposite of improvement
Henry Cruz
Not really. The force, at least as seen in the movies and more grounded installations of the franchise, is limited by a set of quite strict rules. You can pull things, lift things, throw lightning and do various other stuff but you can't change reality.

These lunatics make it seem like gays are 50% of the world population with all this "muh representation garbage". They don't even want equal rights anymore since they have that in the countries where this stuff is pushed, they want to be specially treated because of who they fuck at this point. I've always been neutral on gays, who you want to fuck is entirely your business but man I"m really starting to get sick of their constant attention whoring. I know I'm generalizing here and there are those who just want to live a normal life but the outspoken ones really make it hard to sympathize with the rest of them.
Angel Peterson
I saw a post on social media where some paraplegic was like "Fuck gays, they act like they matter. Where's my disabled representation? We're more important than them." and as a faggot, I agree. There probably are more disabled people than LGBTs and therefore should have more representation.

the more I research mythology, the more I realize there is a severe dearth of mythical rodents to choose from for villain motifs
>rat kings >the pied piper >the mouse queen from the nutcracker (who is probably the squishiest spellcaster of all time) >rodents of unusual size
id say either the piper or the mouse queen is best, but the piper's too edgy and the mouse queen isn't edgy enough
its not intrinsically better — quality is relative after all — but I think the difference between fantasy and magical realism is that in magical realism, the fantastic part of it isn't the focus, its there.
arguably, straight fantasy has more potential for metaphor and commentary, but it doesn't work out that way
> That man is her lawfully arranged husband. Not cuckshit then.

The thing about Conan is that his way of being always got him out of the trouble it got himself into. Like that time he killed a judge in Argos when some knight wanted to kill one of his young friends.

Everything from paranormal, occult, demons, local legends, Halloween themed, a succubus story, unexplained and those are the done stories but I'm also going to write a few more using other genres like extraterrestrial, slasher, existential, and cosmic maybe more.
Colton Miller
>Guess I'll give it a shot This is really important, make sure to read image related, the edition recommended in the OP. All other editions (that I know of) contain unfortunate edits and rewrites by various idiots. They also contain unfinished works, essays, letters and beautiful illustrations.

The absolute best REH Conan stories:
The Phoenix on the Sword The Tower of the Elephant The Scarlet Citadel Queen of the Black Coast Rogues in the House The Hour of the Dragon Beyond the Black River Red Nails
The Phoenix on the Sword The Tower of the Elephant Iron Shadows in the Moon Rogues in the House Beyond the Black River
I'm not a fan of The Hour of the Dragon, Conan as written by REH works best in short story format. I feel that the unplanned and opportunistic structure of Conan's adventures does not work in a novel length story. It reads like a couple of short stories glued together.
Logan Hall
Just read Anansi Boys by Niel Gaiman. Really enjoyed it. I've read American Gods before. Any other recommendations from Gaiman?

Jacob Lopez
>two rivers folk are all perfectly fine with becoming a minority in their own land within the span of a year
You have to reread it and be a genius to get Wolfe so let me help you out. Switch the dreams and the reality and assume Jungian symbols like the loyal dog, the selfish cat, and the enduring horse are valid, as well as anima figures with old women like the barren mothers etc- a process of individuation, org as shadow, etc. Pay attention to eyes, brothers and mothers, difficulty breathing, three tasks and what happens when the last repetition is done, C dudes with head wounds or scars. Take it literally and symbolically.
Brody Jenkins
Smart decision, this way their descendants won't be dumb as a rock country bumpkins like them if they breed with the world wise Taren Ferry-ians..
Jace Torres
I would drop the book hard. But then this is from WoT and I dropped that even quicker.

I like how natives became a minority living in their own lands. America fuck yeah. amirite? It's only okay when America does it. *clapping Intensifies*
Ayden Barnes
I don't see Taren Ferry-ians inventing the fabled Two Rivers Longbow.
Colton Bell
>I like how natives became a minority living in their own lands I don't. >America fuck yeah. amirite? Don't care, not a burger.
America wasn't "their" land. Land doesn't inherently belong to anyone. Whoever is strong enough to take and keep hold of a piece of land owns it until someone does the same to them. No human being has rights to any land.
Jason Long
>America wasn't "their" land. Land doesn't inherently belong to anyone IT SURE DOES NATURAL LAW BITCH NIGGER
Evan Hughes
Yes a "law" made up by and perpetuated by humans.
Tyler Walker
The whole point is that it's inherent, a part of our DNA. If I meet someone on the street carrying an apple I'd assume the apple was theirs. Same if I meet someone living on a piece of land.
Joshua Gray
Why is there no good mommy fantasy? Am I going to have to write my own? I'm sure there's a market for it.

>If I meet someone on the street carrying an apple I'd assume the apple was theirs But it isn't theirs. The apple doesn't naturally belong to them, that's just your projecting your human made law. And if it if was theirs, is there a natural law that says you can't kill them and take the apple so it becomes yours?
The natives were too weak to fend off colonists and so lost the land they settled on. THAT is natural order.

I have read conan books by other authors. They were ok, but I never liked the type of women conan courted, it's some sort of mix of damsels and warrior women. I would prefer some books were dude shacks up with "evil" (or not so evil) sorceress/noblewoman or something.

I don't need to get it, I just don't like it. Never was a huge want anyway.
Wyatt Price
The only thing that's problematic about them is that they're shitty stories.
Justin Walker
>want fan Not sure why I wrote that....
Ryan Wood
>In general I don't like that he get's a new love interest ever so often That's just a part of his character though. He's always wandering from one adventure to the next and only settles down when he becomes King. And even then in Conan of the Isles after his Queen passes away he gives the throne to his son and fucks off on another adventure because he's so bored. But that wasn't written by Howard so I don't really pay attention to it, though Howard himself did say that Conan continued to travel after he became a King.
In short if you're looking for romance then Conan isn't really the place to get it.
Then please enlighten the rest of us with your undoubtedly top tier taste in literature. What do you read?

To be fair it's probably a good bet that most fantasy fans haven't actually read much Conan these days and most likely know OF him through reputation. That style of "sword and sorcery" fantasy is long past its heyday compared to more usual fantasy or modern YA trash.

Right after that Super Hero harem craze, and the monster-girl apocalypse madness.
Wait... Did people copy Arand for the Western Wuxia and monster girl apocalypse? I read a few Western Wuxia books before reading cultivating chaos.
Robert Nelson
he kinda became THE guy when it comes to self-publishing. its not hard to imagine why people would copy him. also according to himself hes becoming a genre blob with how many genres hes trying to write. so its not really hard to see why people would follow his lead. that being said in my opinion theres only like 4 guys that actually write novels about harems well, william is one of them focusing more on the story and characters, daniel shinhofen is another one more focusing on interpersonal relationship and drama between character. then there is archibald bradford and lastly there is cebelius for his template series. not only these the only authors in that whole kindle thing that actually write full sized novels, they are actually well written and have an editorial process behind them. i pretty much disregard other authors in the same space. though i recently read the books from stephen l. hadley and enjoyed them.
Charles Morris
By mommy fantasy do you mean a book where one of the main characters is a mommy or where the hero gets a (maybe literal) mommy gf?
Matthew Morris
>daniel shinhofen I guess you are one of those fags that like the Shakespeare plays and patting fluff on her head in those books.
I didn't know Stacyia was so thicc. But seriously, when he used that shakespeare filler in the book I dropped the series. I heard it got worse in the following books. Glad my BS meter is up to snuff and I know when is the right time to dip
Nathan Gutierrez
>I heard it got worse in the following books. yeah honestly it got worse story wise. i really wanna know how it continues. the whole psycholigical suffering thing comes into effect really hard later on and some tough choices have to be made in regards to a lot of things. daniel had to do a 180 because people wanted more apocalypse gates instead of the other books so hes prioritizing that series now but alpha world 8 is gonna be the last one. i personally am actually more interesting in binding words. but apocalypse gates was alright. i really just wanna know how alpha world and and if there is going to be a delta world like it keeps being teased

Elijah Ortiz
i'd say give it a try. its much better than alpha world in my opinion. you can see he has improved leaps and bounds since the first alpha world in writing in general. the concept of the book is really simple. oaths are literal and hold power over people. its a very simple concept but pretty well executed. the first books starts slow though its mostly world building and establishing the big powers of the world.
Elijah Miller
This, I was in pain from laughing when Mat was explaining the situation to Elayne and Nynaeve.

Are there are plays or other bullshit used to pad the word count? I'm trusting you here user, and you still continuing Alpha World doesn't give you much credibility. Unless you are on of those completionist fags. I used to be one until I over came my autism and learnt to drop books. (I still complete the book but I don't complete the series.

Noah Morales
it literally has been a viable option since 2015
Dylan Adams
How is S.M. Stirling? I was recommended pic related.
self-publishing became a thing that let you earn enough to life on it. kindle unlimited happened in 2014. but in 2015 it took off and more and more people could earn a living through it.
Daniel Jenkins
Does anyone know who the fuck would be publish a late Victorian era fantasy set around naval commerce raiding in a completely fictional (not alternate history) world with limited but narratively important use of magic? I recently found a manuscript among my late father’s papers and was stunned by the quality of it, it’s not a 10/10 but certainly better than a lot of mainstream fantasy. It’s not steampunk, my dad had an engineering background so the technology is very precisely realized and realistic as is the magic ‘system.’
Gavin Collins
The only books of his worth that are worth reading are the Island in the Sea of Time trilogy, pretty unique time-travel and alternate history fusion about a sudden storm blanketing an entire island. When the weather clears, the island's inhabitants find that they are no longer in the late twentieth century but have been transported instead to the Bronze Age. The characters are pretty generic but the story is very imaginative and not at all boring.

I like the conan stories, but they cant match Malazan, which admittedly probably wouldnt exist as it is without Howard, who was just as influential on modern fantasy as Tolkien. Still, saying Conan is better than Malazan is like saying Morrowind is better than Skyrim, its fun to say, but it's patently untrue
John Gray
>If you're here Will calm the fuck down with the Dryads in Wild Wastes. There's too many. There can never be enough Dryads and dragons in your harem.
Grayson Mitchell
Conan is superior to Malazan in literally every category. Originality, prose, efficiency, actual stories and not endless world-building.
Nolan Gonzalez
Why did Disney red-con all the good books they bought the rights to? They would have made bank doing adaptations of the X-Wing Series as well as for Thrawn.
Not an argument, user. Just because Malazan is a bloated dumpster fire doesn't make it better. Quality > quantity.
Kayden Carter
>but what about THIS THING
Jeremiah Brown
how does anyone find motivation to write when the odds of anyone reading it are so low
Wyatt Bennett
Not trying to cobtinue this pointless argument, just genuinely curious, how many Malazan books have you read?

I must have had a lot of confidence or determination when I wrote my first novel. I don't have that anymore. All I can do is fixate on how nothing I do is ever good enough. I don't think I'm going to write another any time soon
shit dude, you can create plotlines? You've got me beat by a mile
Worm unironically has the best kaiju fights I've ever seen, but it's a superhero web novel
Eli Fisher
I've read the main series. There's some good stuff in there (mainly the fighting/battles which Erikson is excellent at), but it's beyond bloated and focused too much on pointless world-building. Even Erikson himself admitted as much.
Bentley Evans
>Even Erikson himself admitted as much I'd like a citiation if you have time. Im only on MoI, but im loving it so far. My hat is off to you if youve read the whole main series, but i find it hard to believe that you could have gotten through all ten novels and still prefer hack and slash conan stories over Malazan. But again, im not even halfway through the series.
Noah Rogers
>conanfags are triggered because no one wants to take time and make memes for their books
>I must have had a lot of confidence or determination when I wrote my first novel maybe i just need to convince myself im better than you and the 500 other novelists publishing this year i mean, i am, but i have to convince myself that it's going to mean anything when it comes to views
Ryan Bell
I think my all time favourite scifi trope; is looking back at a civilisation in the long past before an apocalyptic event, exploring it
Like the small bits and pieces of information about Lews Therin's world before it broke, in Wheel of Time, don't even think there are flashbacks? But the simple implications, when someone asks: Are there still laser-guns around? Love it I guess most post-apocalyptic settings does that, to some extent
Jeremiah Clark
how many views feels cozy
Bentley Harris
Will i enjoy Malazan if i didn't like WoT,Sanderson,GRRM etc? i'm a dinofag but im willing to give Malazan a chance.
Camden Green
Okay, I'm burning through villain ideas. Rat king is reserved for later, undead pied piper with a city-sized pipe organ is too edgy/op, Rat wizard is too silly, Deadmau5 parody is straight out.
How's this: a rattaur. As in, a horse-sized emaciated rat with six legs and two torsos who is also a transmuter/necromancer to boot. His classic tactic is hitting people with a blast of crippling starvation that forces spellcasters to burn mana just to alleviate the hunger pangs.
This same effect also sends zombies into a frenzy
I love that in fantasy, when the ancient tech is just golem-like enough to fit in with the setting
not him, but enough that a well-known media site acknowledges me
Joseph Murphy
Are there any good fantasy books that on the surface seem fairly standard adventure/swords and sorcery in a magical land but constant hint towards something way more fucked up constantly looming in the back that doesn't really go into full swing until much later in the book?
>but i find it hard to believe that you could have gotten through all ten novels and still prefer hack and slash conan stories over Malazan. I've already explained why I'd prefer Conan over Malazan. After reading Malazan and other bloated, dull epic fantasy series' I've became a much, MUCH bigger fan of more efficient storytelling with smaller plots (heroes having to save their world is beyond boring to me now). And now I'm curious as to what Conan YOU'VE read because no one who has actually read the original Conan stories would simply refer to them as "hack and slash."
Nathaniel Mitchell
>Will i enjoy Malazan if i didn't like WoT,Sanderson,GRRM etc? No.
Jordan Watson
You might enjoy it if you skim through a lot of it.
Most people have shit taste. That book has been trashed here plenty of times, something you newly arrived leddit fags might not be aware of. It's a bog standard coming of age YA fantasy with a magic school and sensei Elodin to boot that takes a hard turn into grim derp territory halfway through for no fucking reason other than to be edgy. The GR crowd jerks off over it because the author does something that nobody else has done before and tells us war is bad and brutal. Revolutionary. She's a chink and uses Nanking as inspiration so that ticks the diversity quota as well. And of course there's a love triangle and the female protagonist eye fucking her crush in the middle of said war because why not, what YA book doesn't need those?
Brayden Green
> Most people have shit taste > newly arrived leddit fags > grim derp > GR crowd > She's a chink Are you 12?
Jason Bell
What are some books that will inspire me and help me to optimize my gloriousness levels?
I'm reading Mistborn, great world and magic. But the plot, and characters don't compare. I'm looking for something that has characters, and story that are great, with a decent pace. is Malazan good at plot, and characterization, maybe growth too?
Its got some good characters imo, but idk about growth
Landon Powell
Alright, suggest something with character growth.
Noah Williams
Malazan really sucks at pacing.
Xavier Watson
Are there any really good sci-fi books that do the space/horror thing like Event Horizon? Preferably not 40k, I know they have a whole "our spaceships use hell for FTL" thing, which is neat and shit, but I'm looking for something a little less fantasy.
In my eyes, it is does the exact minimum required to be enjoyable so it's three stars. I drop all books that I deem to be 2 stars and below and 4 stars are super rare and 5 stars are ultra ultra rare.
Angel Howard
That book is based on the movie. You're posting the novelisation of the film, not an original work of literature.
You don't have to read epic series of 15 books you know.
Aaron Thompson
>now a major motion picture >based upon the motion picture
what
Samuel Jackson
Top level marketing. Publication date and the author's provenance kind of suggests the book came second, though.
Asher Rodriguez
I bet you're a gay mouser fag too.
Ayden Robinson
Map fags really need to an hero. You think our land formation is logical? You fags read a book with people levitating vaginas with their cummies, flying with nothing but their will, farting and tearing up so much soil that mountains are formed, but then your suspension of belief is broken because the map doesn't look logical? You all need to kys. I wonder what you fags do when a world was bombarded with meteors and the ore was mined away. Leaving huge craters that eventually full up with water.
I am fed up of you ultra autistic fags coming in here and crying about a fucking map drawing of a fantasy story.
Matthew Smith
Synthoil or implants?
Alexander Anderson
I don't even care about that maps unless they are retarded or very boring, I just posted a video to see what reaction there will be from WoT readers.
Hunter Flores
The blessing of mother EVROPA.
Joshua Garcia
That is modern a day s&s. It's great. Don't read the author's age of [insert thing here] books though. They are utter trash.
What do you like in your books other than character growth? Self published books might be for you.
Setting a whole book in second person sounds like an interesting gimmick but boy is it annoying to read
Robert Cooper
>Identity Evropa is an American neo-Nazi and white supremacist organization established in March 2016. The group is identified as a white supremacist organization by the Anti-Defamation League and is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. Wikipedia So all those carrying of bedsheets at kkk meetings weighed him down enough to cause his muscles to bulge. Okay.
Jonathan Phillips
Golden One (that guy) is hilarious
He's an incredibly obviously closeted 40k nerd but because he can't embrace it he's become the most bizarre sort of skyrim nazi
James Stewart
What does that have do with him, I think he's a swede or something.
James Bell
Hard to say. I like fantasy, I like the "journey" feel for 12 Kingdoms, the humbled royal protagonist who got thrown in Illusion, the broken, mentally, protagonist in Deerskin. I like The One Who Eats Monsters too because people don't know the deep waters they're getting into when they face her, and don't realize they're fighting someone whose power is a deity's.
Joshua Ramirez
>I'm literally twelve and need shit explained to me Okay fag. This cunt said the blessings of a nazi organisations is why he is so swole.
Brayden Howard
Replace U with V or using EVROPA doesn't mean that he was talking about that organization.
The problem is not that you are stupid, but that you are so aggressive and mean whilst being unaware of your stupidity.
David Lee
I see a lot of people making comparisons to Unsouled, and anime. I hate anime, and their stupid characterizations, and convoluted nonsense plot. What do you think of these comparisons of Unsouled to anime?
Luis Cox
>What do you think of these comparisons of Unsouled to anime its western wuxia. basically its dragnonball. with all the powerlevels and bullshit that comes with it.

Jeremiah Campbell
I’ve watched plenty of anime and it doesn’t come off that way. Cradle series is really fun. Finished Underlord last night.
Carter King
Its shallow and saccharine. It feels like a Hallmark movie wherein the protagonist wins because he's the nice guy and everyone's morality is determined solely on whether or not they are aligned with him.
Michael Williams
>The group is identified as a white supremacist organization by the Anti-Defamation League and is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. Wikipedia LOL
