I hate it with a passion.

It's fun for a little bit at the beginning when he's just talking about the guys living in the dorm. Murakami himself said that if the book was straight up biographical it would have been 15 pages. It shows. As soon as he tries to set up these complicated love interests it just becomes ridiculous and trite.

I thought the narrator mentioned she was somewhere between 40-50?

I feel like it drags on completely after Toru leaves the wellness place. Other than that it was alright.

I found the part where he discribes the journey to the institute so jarring. Everything before that is rather brisk qua pace, but for some reason Murikami found it necessary to go into minute detail about a bus ride.
For the rest of the book all plot-points become so transparent and I couldn't shake the image of Murikami as some clumsy puppeteer trying to make me interested in these hollow characters with contrived melodrama.
So much death and sex used to give characters the illusion of depth. Really boring and unimpressive desu.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I picked it up after coming back from a year off college.

Norwegian here, should I read the translated version? It is in my bookshelf, but I've never bothered since I assume it would be better in english.

I cant remember the names, but that one part where the student seduces the music teacher was pretty hot desu

I actually enjoyed that part, his description of the city giving way to small towns and then sparsely populated hills and mountains was really cozy

In isolation the chapter is fine, my grievance is with the odd shift in pacing.

I must admit I read it on a hellish 13hour flight while being sick and unable to sleep- so the general comfiness (which seems to be one of the few redeeming qualities) was most likely lost on me.

I really enjoyed it when I read it and I'm planning on rereading it later this year. I quite like coming-of-age stories and nontraditional love stories though so this sort of novel would always have personally appealed to me.

Have you read Wind-Up Bird Chronicles? Much better desu

I have and I do generally enjoy his more "dream-like" stuff more but I cannot for the life of me remember any specifics from it. I'll have to reread that as well

I truly just wanna be the autistic guy described by Watanabe. I don't remember his name, but he had all these rituals and routines, and was obessed by cleanliness.

Haruki Maruki's best book in that it showcases all of his worst qualities as a writer and reveals that all of his fucking protags are the same apathetic and aimless jazz enthusiasts and literature buffs that tenderly ponder the shape of women's breasts.

This book felt like the equivalent of a one night stand for me. Got very absorbed in the atmosphere and consumed it super fast, then forgot about it as soon as I was done with it. But it was a really comfy read

Eye-roll moments in Norwegian Wood:

>Midori being this obnoxious manic-pixie ditz, who apparently has a heart of gold for caring for her sick father (who gets killed off almost as soon as he's introduced anyway).
