in his life?

It happened to a lot of Trotskyists. He isn't a unique case.

i think alot of it had to do with 9/11.. He felt that many of his leftist comrades were making excuses or justifying radical jihad.

If there's one thing that Hitchens hated was religious fundamentalism, and he felt that people were "handwaving away" radical islam

He was a contrarian. He couldn't stay with one position too long.

If you are not a communist at 20 then you have no heart. If you are still a communist at 40, then you have no brains.

Islam and the Iraq War

Said by people who don't know what communism is.

he didn't. he changed his views on the war, but his political views as a whole were fairly consistently left-wing.

t. boomer he sends everyone he knows chain e-mails with pithy quotes and corny political jokes

said by an actual pathetic communist.

I went the opposite way Hitchens did after 9/11, though I was never a communist at any age, I just didn't like Dubya or the neocohens, then when I started trying to define what I believed in, I decided I was a Buchanan conservative.

But the one thing both of these positions have in common is they are Jewish.

9/11 and some weird obsession with debating with priest

this, he loathed Hussein immensely and for many good reasons he has no problems sharing

But, you could say he was "proven wrong" in hindsight, due to the lackluster changes made in Iraq. His intentions were good, it's too bad he's not still around - we need a lot more people like him.

Yeah, I think this is spot on. Politically he aligned with the neocons on Iraq out of a hatred for religion and with Christianity no longer ascendant/hegemonic and Islam throwing its weight around and then being apologized for by his political circle he rebelled.

Has anyone read mortality? That taught me how to die.

le epic platitude

along with "there are no atheists in foxholes", these have got to be the most trite expressions

he was a brainlet and a pseud

he got older

I remember he unironically shilled for reparations for blacks. How tf was he even remotely right wing?

It predates that. He became aware of the horror of Islamic fascism and theocracy in 1989 when the fatwa against Salman Rushdie was issued.

Indeed. He held a consistent position on Saddam and Iraq for fifteenish years. It's a shame that corporate interests completely undermined the actual regime-change project of Iraq.

how can you call something pathetic if you don't know what it is? what are you afraid of?

A part of me wants to think he jumped on the American imperialist bandwagon because he was born too late to have experienced his native country at it's imperial zenith..

thanks dad

That would be false. He had a very keen insight into the "sense" and "zenith" of British imperialism and might. He wrote a book about the UK's relationship with America in 1990 (good book, I recommend it). His "right wing" views were purely based on secular, anti-theocratic views, in favour of free speech, democracy, and sovereignty. He fought for all of those things on a consistent basis and the 2003 Iraq war was just the most prominent example.

The old categories of left and right became irrelevant, and he saw an interconnected liberal world order as the best way of achieving Marxist outcomes. These sprawling, economic Goliaths have only grown more economically interdependent, shedding the traditions, faiths, and particularities of the sovereign nation-state, their identities subsumed under globalist capitalism. Global capitalism, having grown to capture these states wholly, will either reform or force the worker's revolution, by necessity of its own contradictions. He spoke in no uncertain terms about being a Marxist until the day he died.

Why wouldn't a modern Socialist support the collapse of a fiercely sovereign rogue state attempting to situate itself outside the vast globalist bulwark? Christopher, like other so-called "neocons" who made the journey from Trotskyism, recognised this global capitalist order as the best vehicle for a new socialism.

>. It's a shame that corporate interests completely undermined the actual regime-change project of Iraq.

"The neoconservatives’ intention in Iraq was never to truly build democracy there. Their intention was to flatten it, to remove Iraq as a regional threat to Israel.” Chas Freeman.

A lot of people are missing a huge debacle that occurred near the end of his life, but prior to his cancer.

He targets some still active “comedians” who were enraged about his logical and reasonable argument. Other comments he makes give him a more traditional opinion on gender roles (that anyone adhering to a sliver of biological fact would agree with). His shift would undoubtedly be more dramatic as times changed, he would voice opposition to trannies and to both sides of the political spectrum during the 2016 election.

Indeed. Hitchens was never motivated by this. He was in favour of regime change because of his sympathy for the Kurds and his defense of free speech in the face of Islamic theocracy. Nothing to do with Zionism, though he inevitably became allied with them.
