Yeah, I think this is spot on. Politically he aligned with the neocons on Iraq out of a hatred for religion and with Christianity no longer ascendant/hegemonic and Islam throwing its weight around and then being apologized for by his political circle he rebelled.

That would be false. He had a very keen insight into the "sense" and "zenith" of British imperialism and might. He wrote a book about the UK's relationship with America in 1990 (good book, I recommend it). His "right wing" views were purely based on secular, anti-theocratic views, in favour of free speech, democracy, and sovereignty. He fought for all of those things on a consistent basis and the 2003 Iraq war was just the most prominent example.

The old categories of left and right became irrelevant, and he saw an interconnected liberal world order as the best way of achieving Marxist outcomes. These sprawling, economic Goliaths have only grown more economically interdependent, shedding the traditions, faiths, and particularities of the sovereign nation-state, their identities subsumed under globalist capitalism.
