SHALLAN EDITION >As we all know Shallan is beautiful, talented, witty, independent, highly intelligent, complicated, pure bred and a virgin. >Is Shallan the best and most qualified waifu of all time? Discuss >Whores like Soulcatcher and Lady will not be mentioned ITT
Monthly Reading for March: - The Black Company by Glen Cook
>cuckkiller chronicles has denna the whore >stormlight anime has shallan the mary sue Is it a coincidence that two series that are considered the pinnacle of modern fantasy have the worst female leads I've ever seen?
I wonder if it was a gradual process or some popular and influential book(s) that led to prose in modern fantasy and sci-fi becoming almost universally shit.
Lady is not a whore, she's pure and the best waifu in all /sffg/ Soulcatcher on the other hand is a dirtycoalburner and should be crucified, along with all the fags like
I fucking hate this. Then you have mindless faggots praising it with shit like "this isn't your grandma's fantasy story!". Like shut the fuck up. Wannabe authors going out of their way to be edgy all so they can get on their high horse and masturbate themselves claiming that they "subvert outdated fantasy tropes" is obnoxious as fuck. Hacks like Abercrombie and Lawrence are particularly guilty of this.
Brandon Richardson
>"One of the main characters of Saga of the Skolian Empire has an oedipus complex and his mommy doesnt know and she just thinks he is very clingy" >Eh, what's the point, unless they do shag and become a couple later on. His mom ends up marrying a much younger guy and they have 10 kids together. >Ywn impregnate a cute milf
Caleb Jenkins
>projecting your cuck fantasies Not healthy user.
James Bennett
No he isin't and that would also make Lady coalburner. Stop with your fanfics.
Jordan Roberts
Throne of Glass.
Luke Baker
Why would you even suggest that. Wasted potential.
Elijah Johnson
Mommies are the true patrician choice Based and spicepilled
Andrew Rodriguez
>that would also make Lady coalburner Yes user, I agree.
Ryan Hill
lazy about what, you little fucker.
Carson Ward
>that would also make Lady coalburner It's unambiguously stated by both lady and catcher (who had no reason to lie about that) that Lady didn't fuck the Dominator as it was a purely political marriage and the Dominator was too busy fucking his harem anyway.
Isaiah Foster
Why? Are all the protagonists you know idiots or what?
I will revise my question: I want a fantasy book with a "good" protagonist, who is a "hard" but good guy. If you have to see a point of reference, see The Witcher, only that its protagonist is an idiot. I do not like that stupidity of "gray" protagonists.
To the user who recommended Trysmoon last thread I remember reading it and being disappointed with the ending despite being a mommyfag. In a love triangle between a mother and daughter, you always go for the daughter or you take both. Him choosing the mom felt dumb.
Logan Anderson
Don't really remmber that, but I doubt he didn' tap her once or that Lady did nit have lovers. Anyways, she's boring to me, I wanted Soulcatcher.
Thomas Richardson
Discword, Watch serie. >tfw no Vimes daddy
Grayson Collins
>I doubt he didn' tap her once or that Lady did nit have lovers Then you didn't read the books. Because it's literally stated that she didn't.
Thomas Roberts
The daughter was busy being raped and dead though.
Andrew Murphy
Trymoon saga The stand by Stephen king And pic related It's rare to get mommy books.
Canon is absolutely clear that she's a virgin until Croaker fucks her. You want to say otherwise, you're the one with the fanfiction burden.
Xavier Russell
This is the most discussion I've seen in a while on sffg and surprise surprise it's about who is a bigger whore between Catcher and Lady.
Leo Price
I don't remmber it in the first book, later ones are like a haze to me, I just read them once. I liked build up with Soulcatcher and then the shitty romance with Lady was all I got, it felt artificial too. Not to mention half of the cast got killed off so books got even more boring. Was she really, I really don't remmber that. Oh well, Cook wanted his waifu and he got her.
Joshua Morris
This discussion happens verbatim any other thread tho.
Nathaniel Wilson
Shouldn't be an argument because anybody whose read the books knows for a fact that Lady is pure. Her marriage with Dominator was purely political and they never consummated it, and any other man was too scared to approach her. Dominator was going balls deep in Soulcatcher however.
Grayson Sanders
Sailing to Sarantium
Alexander Hill
Thanks, Watch series looks interesting, but Discword looks weird.
Dylan Flores
It's quite simple if you think about it. Where do most of the anons around here get most of their female attention from? From mommy dearest of course. So their fantasies and fetishes quite naturally skew towards milfs and incest.
Ethan Nguyen
>but Discword looks weird. you misspelled comfy af
James Johnson
And while I'm at it, should you happen to speak french, Gagner la Guerre - Jean-Philippe Jaworski
Jackson White
why did /sffg/ turn into waifu wars?
Aaron Torres
Kek Half the cast of Saga of the Skolian Empire are milfs so it has almost every mommy scenario except momcest :(
Adam Nguyen
Holy shitballs that's a lot of books. Then again I did read quite a lot of Horus Heresy and SW books myself.
Lincoln Thompson
So Dominator thought Soulcather was a better lay. Oh well, I guess then I would have liked them reunited since Croker choose the shitty one and it never went anywhere (just like the series).
Benjamin Carter
I really liked New York 2140
Grayson Richardson
>So Dominator thought Soulcather was a better lay. Compared to who? People keep trying to tell you that he never did anything with Lady. Why are you so obsessed with running with your headcanon when the literal text enthuse books prove you wrong? Also Lady's romance with Croaker does go somewhere and has an ultimate conclusion but again you'd know that if you actually bothered to read the damn books instead of talking out of your ass.
Jayden Reyes
See what you done montlyreading user? you brought back the waifufags.
Julian Perry
More like OP's fault >Whores like Soulcatcher and Lady will not be mentioned ITT What the fuck did he think was gonna happen
Levi Myers
Ahem, can you remind us who forgot about the standalone rule and put Black Company in the poll? This waifu shit was going on in the last thread too.
Ethan Sullivan
Looking into it too. The settings that the autor choose are interesting.
Sadly I don't know french.
Nicholas Ward
It's going on in all sffg threads. I mean come on, the first post is always either >sanderfag a hack or >lady a shit Putting black company in the poll was retarded, but we can hardly blame him for the waifu faggotry, not with that OP.
Connor Morgan
>compared to who Not compared to, but by the fact that he potentialy banged Soulcatcher and or their other sisters and not the Lady. I guess she was not worth it. I know that that their romance grows later one, but I'm only really interested in the first 4 or so books. I was really let down after North books too, yet another series were I don't get romance I want and most of the old company was dead not to mention they moved to notIndia... Not even Goblin and One Eye saved the series for me.
Owen Morris
>literally schizophrenic >best and most qualified waifu Yeah no.
Nathan Hall
Sanderfag IS a hack though. The fat fuck can't write characters to save his life, and don't even get me started on his "humor". The only thing he's good at is worldbuilding and even that's hit or miss.
Elijah Sanders
Lady IS shit
Owen Morales
>putting black company in the poll was retarded i thought you people RECOMMENDED black company?
Lincoln Martinez
shallan is /ourautist/
Oliver Smith
No she's a dumb bimbo.
Isaiah Jackson
>Tigana >modern
Jonathan Ortiz
remember to fucking spoiler your text if you're talking about the black company spoilers. we still have another couple weeks before discussion you're in the wrong subreddit pal
Nathan Lewis
>remember to fucking spoiler your text if you're talking about the black company spoilers. the newest book in the series is from 2000 twenty years is more than enough to not bother with spoilers
Josiah Wood
My gripe is that her "romance" felt fake in the first books. Even Soulcatcher was a hard sell in a way, Lady was even more so. I think Cook just wanted his waifu bad. I guess I can't blame him. I guess I will have to write a fanfic for Soulcatcher one day...
Luke Bell
Under ordinary circumstances yes, but since the book is the monthly reading it's a special case.
Jose Nguyen
>the newest book in the series is from 2000 Didn't a book literally just come out a few months ago?
Jacob Bell
Based
Xavier Parker
If I didn't like Wheel of Time am I going to dislike Malazan?
Hunter Brooks
Not necessarily. they're both bloated but in different ways.
Ryder Gray
They're both garbage so yes.
Benjamin Adams
I didn't get on with either but for vastly different reasons so its worth giving Malazan a try
Anthony Hernandez
They're both absolute garbage, but at least Jordan's trash is coherent in its banality and tedium, whereas Erikson never even bothers to attempt such things as characterization or decent prose, hoping instead to wow you with DBZ battles and philosophizing grunts
Jeremiah Clark
Good evening denizens of /sffg/, what sci-fi have you been enjoying recently?
What's the name of the scifi book that has like a small tribe of people walking through a desert and then one of them connects with an omnicient liquid computer thing and connects with the planet.
It IS modern retard, 18 years doesn't make a book old.
Adrian Jenkins
Black comapany a shit Lady a shit Croker a shit
Soulcatcher a waifu
Connor Sullivan
nigga it's old enough to drink, vote and fuck in all properly civilized nations
Andrew Rodriguez
What is it with chronic pain sabotaging authors I like? First Susanna Clarke and her crippling disease and now Ada Palmer seem to suffer from some unknown ailment. Hot take: Sanderson is secretly a mormon vampire sapping other creative authors of their life force to sustain his never ending flow of mediocre books.
I've seen the kids books already, lotr/HP and recently I read Wizard of Earthsea (which I found boring) can anyone recoment some fantasy with cool magic ? I wanted fun magic like in dnd and adventure time
Chase Wright
Why the fuck am I reading 'Black Company?'
Adrian Carter
>not liking waifus What's even the point then...
Aiden Scott
if you waifufags don't behave, you're not going to be invited to the Black Company discussion at the end of the month
Adam Torres
Why are there so many good books written in I surrender? The I surrenders are the masters of perversion and degeneracy. They should translate them to English.
Landon Davis
I think soulcatcher used to reference lady as a dead fish or w/e. But with practice everything can improve. Lady's wetwalls got worked out.
Isaiah Brooks
So... I guess in real life you stuck your dick regularly in crazy chicks because "they are more fun" right? Now you want the fantasy you read to reflect your real life.
Aiden James
What book are you talking about? No book was released in years. There are only 10 books. Nope. He promised a book but nothing was released. Nope. No book.
Anthony Scott
Okay I got Traveler's Gate since it was free and I figured a relaxing anime book could be fun. But then I hear that Territories are literally fragments of dead worlds and my alarm bells are ringing. Is this Sanderson multiverse shit all over again?
Nettle is the most unlikable piece of shit character I've ever seen. Jesus christ who thought such an illogical ungrateful little piece of shit should ever be a character? Literally somehow even worse than Molly, I don't know if I can even finish Fool's Assassin at this point
>haha user that's the point don't you get it her name is nettle Fuck off
Brandon Hughes
Found the fag that recommends WoT.
Adrian Hernandez
do we have a list of all the previous books we've read?
Carter Harris
>I should have a little working time today before it gets bad. Trying to use it well >posts her life on twitter Wahman, not even once.
Ian Long
>Recommending Painted/Warded Man Whoever built this list needs to be fucking shot, that series was a dumpsterfire beyond ASOIAF
Hunter Nelson
>Anglo publishers do the translations user. Ask them.

Jeremiah Wilson
Territories are like the realms where naruto summons his frogs from.
Camden Nelson
Fuck no
Wyatt Wright
>Brent Weeks Somehow that list is even worse than your chart. Kill yourself with a toothpick, you tasteless shit eater.
Alexander Reed
Use mythology he didn't use. But frankly who cares, Tolkien took inspiration too.
Robert Miller
Whoever made this chart has a wonderful sense of humor.
Levi Diaz
I assure you he made it completely unironically. Same fag that made the uber shitty Amazon self published chart. He grew up on a diet of crayons, can't help himself.
Owen Parker
That chart was made years ago when the series was good.. Same with the shadow of what was lost. The first book was great. The second book was dumpster fire fuel.
Jack Miller
even as far as halfway into the first book it was a dead series. Fucking hell, did he honestly want us to fucking RELATE to the Krasians in any way shape or form?
Carter Green
Most modern day fantasy doesn't follow Tolkien.
Jayden Cook
Was there any fantasy that actually for real fallowed Tolkien, not just on surface level.
Austin Miller
Fuck you and your shit tastes. I bet you're a conanfag.
Joseph Martinez
I didn't even know you could eat crayons... Speaking from experience, user?
Parker Taylor
Brent Weeks wrote about a girl using magic to feel intensified pleasure while her legal husband fucked his actual wife. Fuck off.
Evan Campbell
You mean you don't rape your juniors as a rite of passage? Also you aren't supposed to relate to anyone.. It's just a story. Is that the only way you can read a book? If there are relatable characters?
Julian Smith
Terry goodkind.
Justin Allen
you are generally meant to relate to the protaganists so that you are actually invested in their story.
Charles Anderson
Pol, did you just speed read the book? You know pol, even your deus vult leaders were cucks, and had to make sacrifices to further their cause.
Easton Young
No. How can I relate to a female character? I don't have a vagina. You are suppose to be invested in the story, not characters.
i dont know about you but characters are the most important factor for me personally. if i like the characters and their interactions i basically dont care about what they are actually doing. sure i might not relate to a female character like a women would but at least i can relate to decisions they made giving circumstances or understand their thinking based on their personality. for me characters make the book. the setting is secondary.
Jackson Howard
>I can't relate to a character that isn't my exact clone Is this the power of ultra-autism?
Nicholas Ortiz
no, this is the power of anime
Henry Bell
Do you guys have e-readers or do you just buy paperbacks? I want to get a e-reader but they're like $150.
William King
use your phone/computer/literally anything other than an E-reader
Zachary Kelly
>Not preferring a One-Eye futa girl who can give you a skull job after she fucks your ass raw
Wyatt Young
>relating to a series that devolves into a 600 page finale of of castration, hermaphrodite babies, and cuck porn. Nufantasy needs to stop
Working my way through some of Tolstoy's novellas right now but I just copped a stack of vintage SF paperbacks: James Blish, Tanith Lee, PKD.
Justin Price
Never go full incel, user.
Camden Harris
Terminal World
Some people might describe it as steampunk, but those people would be dumb. It's setting of the book goes up and down through technological levels as different degrees of technology either function or don't.
You hate Malazan so much that you samefag? You don't even change your reply much.
Christian Wright
I thought roasties don't use such a toxic masculinity site board like this. That or you're a faggot. Guys don't say incel.
Samuel Stewart
Never go full soi either, user.
Carter Reed
Containment is that way
Leo Richardson
See: And:
Julian Morales
No, it might have been a part of a series. I specifically remembering the character connected with the liquid computer and actually became omnicient, like he could see everything and feel everything on that planet.
Kevin Wilson
>3am >like two years since I read devices and desires >suddenly clicks for me that "devices" in the title has a double meaning lmao I'm slow
Dominic Howard
£100 on a kindle and pirating stuff has let me read more and probably for less than using libraries and buying physical books
Jaxon Barnes
I've been using the e-book viewer attached to Calibre for years now; are there any other e-book reader alternatives for PC?
Andrew Richardson
Nettle is pretty much the moment I realized Hobb is a hack. Everything about her after the skill pillar is truly awful writing
Tyler Ward
Demon Accords series by John Conroe?
Jason Miller
Yea. Ask your optician when you go in for your eye saving surgery.
Mason Lewis
what makes it for awful writing?
Easton Harris
Literally no difference from reading a book on your PC to reading shitposts on a mongolian basket weaving forum.
Hunter Taylor
>he reads 4chin from his desktop >he doesn't have a specially made tablet that reduces eye strain
Jace Foster
I don't have sissy girl eyes like you obviously.
Angel Wilson
No, it was scifi fantasy with like space travel and shit, I think. It reminded me a bit of Dune. I don't know when it was written but it definitely wasn't a modern teen novel type or anything. It felt old. I specifically remember the guy who becomes omnicient ends up forgiving and loving everybody in his omniscience, being he can read everyone's thoughts and is unable to hate them. I really thought the planetary omniscient liquid computer merging aspect would narrow it down pretty easily but I guess I underestimated the breadth of scifi works. I really want to figure out what it was now.
"I am called Ethram-Fal." "Ethram-Fal?" Zelandra's voice cracked. "I have heard of you, Stygian. A reject of the Black Ring. Why do you present yourself as a normal man rather than the twisted dwarf that you are?" "Bitch!" The invader all but choked in astonishment.
kek
Isaac Fisher
I still have some faith that I will be able to read the Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell sequel and Perhaps the Stars before everyone gets off the fucking boat in Hunter x Hunter (aka Hiatus x Hiatus) or something actually happens in Berserk.
But it is quite ironic, is it not? That Susanna Clarke has so many characters face fatigue and also experiences it herself. The real enemy was the chronic fatigue we faced along the way.
The content creator who is the worst off and whose stuff I also am following is Katsura Hoshino who has arthritis and obviously this being a degenerative disease without a cure means that her series is basically fucked.
On the brighter side, assuming that this fatigue and chronic pain shit doesn't turn out to be cancer, we'll probably get those books eventually. With Clarke, at least, she released the Ladies of Grace Adieu anthology which goes some way towards mitigating the wait. With the JSaMN sequel apparently it isn't going to follow the same set of characters anyway. And Palmer, if I recall correctly, is one of those plotter types so hopefully it isn't totally fucked.
I've only read one series which ended on a cliffhanger because Asimov died before he could finish it -- the Foundation series -- and I am still very unhappy about not being able to read the ending...
I'm about 43k words into some random fanfic that probably won't be published if I'm not pleased with the quality of the prose.
Juan Price
I was just kidding about the isekai bit sort of, that's not really a central element at all though it does technically happen
I wanna make a series of stories around it, but the primary setting is a ruined land smothered in eternal darkness that only has a moon that cycles daily
in the specific story I'm working on which is about a side character, there's a foxgirl who starts as a child and becomes enslaved by a group that follows a war god
she gets bounced around as they decide to try and find a use for her, her species is known for being good at magic so they work off that, only to find she actually can't into magic at all but instead can see movements a short time into the future
Leo Anderson
>He grew up on a diet of crayons this is so stupid its funny, i laughed outloud
Jason Davis
I'm not really worried about Perhaps the Stars, the book is almost finished. But I would have hoped that Palmer would write more once she's finished with Terra Ignota.
Justin Perry
She did write many volumes of history before so unless this is a particularly new condition I am not *too* worried unless it develops further. I wonder how the series sold, I can't imagine that phil scifi is exactly too mainstream but then again I saw the series in my local bookstore.
William Perry
>I wonder how the series sold It have probably sold good enough. The first book got great reviews, was nominated for a Hugo, won some lesser awards and got some push by Tor.
Angel Stewart
>Terra Ignota Is it the one were biological family got replaced by extended/friends and other shit like that. Also globalism. Got I hate sci fi like this.
Blake Peterson
Yeah, and then it all crash and burn.
Juan Foster
>what you expected: extended/friends and other shit like that >what you get is --
Neither. The two first books explore how such a system could fail, and how extremely fragile the specific system in the book is. Same with gender really.
Benjamin Collins
The Many-Colored Land
I barely made it through the opening chapters but now that the ball is rolling on the plot I'm really digging it
Leo Price
You get about as many answers in some matters as you get from Gene Wolfe which is none.
Bentley Bell
Retard
Nathan Gomez
Sounds a bit like this, anyone read it? I enjoyed it verily.
Opinions on The Expanse book series please I like the tv show even with the shitty acting
Noah Peterson
Cradle is trash. The people who recommended it are morons. There are many things I can say about it but the worst thing has to be the protagonist. Three books in and Lindon is still one of the worst characters in Cradle.
Noah Cook
Meh Sanderson at his best Sanderson can only write tolerable characters
Gavin Ortiz
Monthly reading has always been cringe.
Ayden Reyes
Way of Kings is a decent read. The other two books are shit so I suggest you to not bother in the first place
Josiah Gomez
Why does every chart have terrible shit mixed with good books? Are you guys trying to bait people to read trash?
Lincoln Collins
>reading the assassin books where no assassinations take place in the first place
Zachary Garcia
>Night Angel trilogy Are you twelve?
Christopher Gonzalez
I shouldn’t have gotten gardens of the moon on audible. I have no idea what’s going on.
Charles Flores
No, you definitely shouldn't have. It's not even worth pirating.
Henry Jones
Gardens of the moon is shit and while I personally think Malazan doesn't improve Malazanfags say it does. It's up to you
Robert Scott
GotM is so shit even the diehard Malazanfags don't defend it
Landon Garcia
whats so bad about it
Jacob Cook
Not that non but 2 cents on it.
Bad use of in medias res style, is mostly a set up for future books;the first book should never be the setup book, much of it doesn't make sense, the "plot" and it's generous to even call it a plot is badly structured and the prose is sub par compared to the sequels.
Oliver Scott
Yeah, I take full responsibility. I promise we will not be reading Black Company again next month. I also donated 5€ to Wikipedia as repentance.
Dominic Collins
Read it and find out
Ethan Flores
Brainlets
Eli Hernandez
>that one eternally seething malazan fan
Carson Parker
I'm sold on the title and cover alone
Oliver Perez
Can you elaborate? It was recommended to me but if it's really trash then I'll avoid it. What makes the main character insufferable?
Angel Young
>I will take one person's word for something instead of doing my research myself You know what. Don't read cradle. We don't want weak resolve faggots like you joining us. Also go read the chinkshit machine translated crap that the person who you replied to likes.
Brayden Watson
Did you read every single book there to know if they are trash or not?
Jayden White
No. I read shit that entertains me. Why don't you go read some boring dry prose dinocore book?
Nathaniel Ortiz
He'a literal retard. In the first book he gets brought back to life by some "goddess" and is told he has 30 years to get strong enough to save his home. Because of this he thinks it's his destiny to become strong and does the stupid shit all the time. I'll five you an example. In the second book he's three levels behind everyone else (he's a copper and everyone else is gold) and at one point gets captured as a mining slave. The rest of the miners are golds. He manages to get out because he recently endeared himself to someone powerful. After this he comes up with a plan to steal something from the mine and it's only him and his gold friend. They get caught and he's surprised because he assumed he was smarter than everyone else. The way his character is written is also insufferable.
Robert Watson
I don't follow charts but yes I've read most of the books on there
Levi Carter
Forget the prose everything else in the Night Angel trilogy is also garbage
Noah Adams
We don't defend it because we are busy reading. You fags that don't read always shit talk Malazan, Sanderson, and others, hoping to get a rise out of us. But we don't give 2 fucks. What I find funny is when you non reading fags try to use our silence as confirmation bias to prop up your feeble opinion. What I also like is when new non reading fags come in here and use the vocal minority's opinion as gospel truth, and utterly self destruct when the majority comes out.
Colton Powell
Most =|= every single book. Opinion disregarded.
Jaxon Russell
You again faggot? We btfo of you a few threads back and you still return? You didn't even reach quarter way in book one and you came in here swinging your opinions. I like when you speedreading / dropped out readers come in and drop your hot opinions. Then get shamed into committing sudoku when it is revealed that you didn't even read the book. Kys
Have you lost so devastatingly that you are comparing Night Angel Trilogy to Twilight? Jesus. Talk about grasping straws.
Jordan Hall
I knew we had brainlet with shit tastes in these generals. No wonder complicated works baffles them and hurts their brains, if this is the shit they like.
Elijah Nguyen
I'm not the user you're arguing against and I've never read Night Angel, I just find your argument stupid.
Wyatt Scott
I just read Tower Lord. What the fuck happened? I don't think I'll finish this.
Josiah Harris
Nearing 100k on my fantasy themed with whore of babylon and the frogs
Jaxon Gray
We told you to treat blood song as a standalone. Not our fault you don't want to listen.
Parker Ortiz
>I never read said book >let me give my hot opinions on why said book is bad >i know what i'm saying because I speak out my ass
Dylan Ortiz
All I'm asking is why?
Jordan Morgan
So.. A plague of angels?
Evan Moore
Kingkiller book 3 fucking when lads
Ethan Gray
Just asked a simple question, no need to act all edgy and sperg out.
Thanks. If a protagonist is insufferable and not on purpose, then that automatically kills my interest in a book.
Joseph Foster
It opened too many Povs, the plot went places and never recovered, followed people that should have never been followed. Queen of fire makes you want to cut yourself.
Nathan Thompson
Exactly like I said. Go read the chinkshit that enjoys. You two will make a great pair of shit tastes aficionados
Logan Gonzalez
I remember reading this and ranger's apprentice as a kid. In pic related the MC was cucked and in Ranger's Apprentice Flanagan killed off the MC's waifu at the very end. What the fuck is their problem?
>SHALLAN EDITION >>As we all know Shallan is beautiful, talented, witty, independent, highly intelligent, complicated, pure bred and a virgin. Maaaary Sueeeee
Gavin Adams
These are my posts , . I've never said anything about your little love child. However the title does admittedly sound like something a 15 year old would come up with.
Justin Ross
Editors told him multiple povs were all the rage
Henry Myers
Should have told him that evil waifus are instead.
Hudson Jones
>be me >be a Rick and Morty fan >also want to know what happens next with the Chandrians >no new Rick and Morty season ever (episodes of which, by the way, directly copy and paste plots like the Microcosmic God which you can read here 1pezeshk.com/wp-content/pics/2013/01/microcosmicgodtheodoresturgeon-111104040008-phpapp02_2.pdf) >this book isn't even a story and is instead some /tg/shit crossover >WMF is 99% elf sex Lyonesse is pretty good if you want something good.
I don’t really know what /sffg/‘s consensus is on Elric of Melnibone, but I’ve noticed that GRRM seems to have based a bunch of Valyrian lore off of Elric and the Melniboneans. I’m halfway through Fortress if the Pearl right now, and the entire beginning sequence of it is essentially the Qarth plotline of Daenerys.
Quarzhasaat. Qarth. Both are ruled by an oligarchic council and are in the middle of a barren desert. I’ve heard that the author of The Witcher gets called out for the similarities between Geralt and Elric, but I’ve never heard anyone rip on GRRM for this. Should I expect more of this as I continue through the Elric series?
>tfw still reading Fifth Head of Cerberus I'm enjoying it, but I find it just really dry so I only read a bit of it a week. Just not something I'm ITCHING to get through like I was Dying Earth or Scanner Darkly. In the middle of the second story right now.
Jose Powell
I like Fifth Head, but you can tell that Wolfe hasn't really hit his groove yet. This might explain why it's a relatively short book. Lesson in there for newer authors.
Hudson Martin
The frogs are heralds of chaos. They are neutral.
The whore of babylon is a 8 feet tall Nephilim descendant that forcibly spreads her idol worship through the world.
Daniel Flores
Some people get really butthurt about writers not being 100% original. In reality, that's not how it works at all -- anyone who's studied a single author in detail can identify their sources of inspiration and guess what, sometimes this includes deliberate homage.
Elric was pretty influential, so yes you will certainly notice that it influenced other authors.
Jayden Cox
I think Elric was really influential, but less so for fantasy novels as much as for fantasy games aka D&D. Many attribute D&D inspirations to Lord of the Rings, but in all honestly there's a WHOLE lot of Dying Earth and Elric in there.
Mason Green
>Many attribute D&D inspirations to Lord of the Rings These people are stupid.
Almost like Both are based on carthage or Qart Hadasht.
Isaac Gonzalez
The first three novels are solid, Cibola Burn is pretty weak outside of a few entertaining characters like Murtry, haven't read farther than that. I stopped reading for now because it seems like they start going all-in on the alien shit instead of the Earth/Martian/Belt storyline, and that's not what attracted me about the series.
Kayden Brown
Take your time user, you're not missing anything.
Easton Gonzalez
Elric was also somewhat influential on metal music.
As far as gaming, yeah, that was around the time of D&D's early development so of course you'll see that.
>Many attribute D&D inspirations to Lord of the Rings
They're wrong, this idea comes almost entirely from uninformed outsiders or at least people who haven't both read LOTR and played D&D. It's pretty much the same thing as a meme that used to go around that The Matrix was a "shot for shot remake" of Ghost in the Shell -- no one who'd actually seen GitS could believe that. If you want a more detailed explanation of this, search "Appendix N" on Google.
Asher Phillips
Almost a dozen chapters into this and it might be better than Karl Edward Wagner's Conan pastiche. Feels closer to a typical REH Conan story (with the same constant forward momentum). Even though I enjoyed KEW's Road of Kings it still reads like a Conan story written by KEW whereas Hocking's Emerald Lotus almost reads like a long lost REH story.
Do you think you can get away with writing a real story that still has ecchi elements? I thought about it today and I think I cringed way more during gratuitous rape/killing scenes than anything to do with plain sexualized characters. In general I feel that even when I hear from female friends, they react worse to women just randomly getting raped for no reason than to characters being sexy. I just hate it when you can smell an author's fetish off the page. Fuck you, Bakker, I know you're reading this.
Lucas Murphy
>Tfw you’ll never spray a 5 dollar whore with semen the color of pitch
>you will never let the god-emperor of a grimdark setting take you up the pooper
Julian Gray
>Fuck you, Bakker, I know you're reading this. Wouldn't that be something.
Andrew Reyes
You can write whatever the fuck you want as long as you're good.
Lincoln Turner
I'm pretty sure "ecchi" just means story has lewd elements, though. Which means precisely what you want it to mean.
Cameron Long
It's okay, I still love you, Daddy.
Logan Ramirez
Proyas had it coming. He did my boy Akka dirty.
Blake Torres
Huh? Akka was a faggot. He literally spent decades by himself and still pined after Kellhus and Esmenet. Proyas became woke as fuck by the end. He's the Curze of this story. Akka had not a single redeeming moment in the entire Aspect-Emperor.
Leo Reyes
Akka called kellhus out in front of all the kings and schools of the crusade. Proyas was sucking dunyain dick until they broke him on the wheel.
Ian Wright
The title story was great. So was "The Tower Of Babylon". "Understand" was good execution of a somewhat cliche conceit. "Seventy-Two Letters" was pretty good but Chiang didn't seem to notice that he was literally describing DNA.
The rest of them, yeah, meh. It would be totally excusable if he didn't spend about a year writing each story.
Fuck you people, fantasy and waifus are great and you just want to jizz over yourselves pretending to be reading some thought provoking literature like some snobs.
Ethan Allen
I love fantasy, but most of it is unreadable trash. There are people in this thread that genuinely think Sanderson or Rothfuss are good writers. That's a frightening thought.
Christopher Hill
And Vidya too,Legacy of Kain it's basically the Eternal Champion sequence with vampires
Jace Rogers
>think Sanderson or Rothfuss are good writers. That's a frightening thought. Well fuck them too, but they can enjoy those books if they want.
Ryder Mitchell
What is a bad or good book to /sffg/ anyway, how do you critique?
Gabriel Howard
>Legacy of Kain it's basically the Eternal Champion I've never read that, but I'm not going to have to request a real breakdown here. >inb4 it just has time travel so it's the same story I really love LoK and I've never heard anyone say it's a copy of something else. Explain yourself.
Xavier Clark
>Ignorance Which is what you're suffering from. Fantasy and sc-fi come from the same root and there was a point when writers regularly weaved between both AND horror.
Zachary Cox
>Do you think you can get away with writing a real story that still has ecchi elements? Yes,see Dune,it has orgies and milf sex slaves and people still like it
Adam Ortiz
>most of it is unreadable trash. This is true for literally everything.
Hunter Parker
>"that food you're eating has poor nutritional qualities" >"FUCK YOU I CAN ENJOY WHAT I WANT! FUCKIN' LIBS TRYING TO BAN BIG MACS!"
Brayden Fisher
>tfw the zoomer generation grows up and starts writing bbc-centered fantasy We're in for a wild ride. >This is true for literally everything. To a vastly different extent, lol. If you think most sci-fi is as bad most fantasy you are legitimately demented or too much of a biased hack to tell the difference. Of course the vast majority of ANYTHING is bad. But the bad in fantasy is FAR WORSE than any other category.
Nolan Russell
>Fantasy and sc-fi come from the same root and there was a point when writers regularly weaved between both AND horror.
Yes, and those people didn't write Joss Whedon stories taking place in a generic medieval setting with wise-cracking atheist warrior women quipping and quirking and smirking every other line. In other words, they wrote FANTASY and not what masquerades under that name today. Modern "fantasy" should really be called something else which adequately locates it with its peers fanfiction and light novels
Brandon Ward
>nutritional qualities You're not supposed to eat books faggot. None of them provide any nutrition.
Logan Young
>But the bad in fantasy is FAR WORSE than any other category. No it isn't. The worst of fantasy is no worse than the worst of sci-fi or horror or any other genre. Scalzi's sci-fi garbage alone is living proof of this.
Charles King
>Modern "fantasy" should really be called something else which adequately locates it with its peers fanfiction and light novels
yeah there's a word for that: Pulp.
James Scott
How can you say "Way of Kings" and Conan are in the same category? It's an insult.
Jeremiah Collins
Yes an insult to Conan
Andrew Rogers
>I've never read that The Eternal Champion sequence it's just the Elric,Erekose,Corum and Dorian Hawkmoon books, the erekose series being the beginning and the Hawkmoon books being the end. >it's a copy of something else.Explain yourself. Not saying is a carbon copy, but it's definitely inspired,Kain is very similar to elric, not just the looks but him wanting to change the order of things in the same way elric wanted to use chaos to destroy chaos, kain realizing that he is just a pawn of fate etc Raziel has more similarities to the overall cocept of the eternal champion but mainly to erekose, like both raziel and erekose suffer fro hundreds of years in the abyss after being betrayed and how the die in the end, raziel becomes the soul reaver so Kain can fight the elder gods and free humanity and erekose dies so he can give power to the Runestaff so that Dorian Hawkmoon can destroy the cosmic balance and free humanity. Also Eidos wanted to do an Elric videogame but at the time Universal Pictures had the rights to Elric so instead they made blood omen 2
Daniel Ross
i mean, they are a good source of insoluble dietary fiber, but that's not really a nutrient
Angel Morris
Well, then you are saying something different. I've personally read Elric and I don't think he is similar to Kain at all. You're oversimplifying it too much to get your point across.
thanks user yeah the political part is the most interesting
>"Seventy-Two Letters" was pretty good but Chiang didn't seem to notice that he was literally describing DNA. b-but that's the idea
"Exhalation" is nice
Jaxson Fisher
Just finished Prelude to Foundation. I couldn't stand it. It was stupid tacky sci-fi cliches, characters giving long winded explanations for things that could be easily implied, and really insufferable characters (Dors just easily picking up knives. Seems like bad fanficiton).
I expected something about dyson spheres and shit like that, for some reason. Does the rest of the series get better?
Josiah Parker
Should have just started with Foundation
Bentley Smith
Read foundation 1, 2 and 3 and stop there.
Joshua Robinson
12 Kings of Sharakai
Jordan Ramirez
>WHY IS DORS PICKING UP KNIVES >WHY AM I SO CONFUSED Maybe because you're a fucking retard who just picked up the seventh book in the series and has't read the original Foundation Trilogy and the Robots series first
Brayden Gomez
Just got round to reading a scanner darkly, about half way through. Great book, Philip K Dick knows how to spin a yarn.
Any other great californian writers, sci fi or otherwise?
Elijah Reyes
I saw it was a prelude so I figured it was, you know, first. I've read I Robot. Is that connected somehow? Besides Hummin reciting the laws of robotics
Will do anons
Carter Cruz
NO DEGENERATES ALLOWED
Robert Allen
I just finished it last night. It was a weird book. I`m kind of undecided whether i liked it or not.
Colton Carter
What next?
Jaxon Cook
monthly user makes a poll at the end of the month and we vote for the next one.
Jaxson Watson
I personally think Malazan is far superior to wheel.
Having said that, It has its own problems and drops off fast after the first few books.
Leo Howard
That island is on the same planet as Leaf village. You could walk there like Jirya did, just would take a long time.
