I confess I read Blood Meridian first and no other McCarthy book came close to quenching the bloodlust I expected from him after that

the book is a good read, it's a fun little western romp and really gets you in the mood to imagine the much harsher violence of Blood Meridian

Honestly better than Blood Meridian. So much more honest. McCarthy can't make anything that isn't completely contrived unless he's writing like a journalist with a TBI, and even then his subject matter is usually suspect
