Any opinions on The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks? I'm in the middle of Shadow's Edge after getting the 10th Anniversary Edition of the trilogy. It is garbage. I usually can enjoy pretty much any novel in the genre, at least a bit, but The Night Angler is pure irrational, self-insert shit with generic worldbuilding, stupid and cliche characters and the only interesting plot point was not being developed.

I don't remember if his skills (good with weapons, tracking) were explained in later books, but in first book his is stu ish, though perhaps mentally stunted one.
Raven is actually one of the more layered characters, but his history is largely unexplored in the first book and he keeps up the tough guy act throughout. You'll have to keep reading but he's definitely not perfect.

I doubt I will ever finish it but when I look through all my notes and ideas it would be roughly 14 conflicts in the entire Continuation War. This would be around 32 books. It technologically spans an era from the late renaissance to roughly 200 years into our own future.
Its grimdark and edgy, and many things the characters did were cringey.
It was a fun ride though, not everything has to be a life changing epic or be meaningful. It was popcorn fantasy and if I was in the mood I would read something like it again.

not really, I'd even argue that mechanically Oblivion is worse because of its busted leveling system and weird design choices. Skyrim's base game was pretty well optimized on release (for a bethesda game) and works as intended for the most part, and the main story is better and more interesting even if they fucked Alduin's lore up.

I read Brent Weeks’ first black prism book and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever read. The overall story was good but the execution and prose was a disaster. It really shows that he was a bartender before he started writing
/sffg/, I think I need to put this story down and work on something else. The world and core idea have some potential and I'm a lot closer to finding a solution than I used to be, but ultimately I don't think this is something I'm capable of solving alone. Frankly it might be easier to write other stories and hope I can eventually talk a better author into Good Omens-ing it with me.

There are parts and scenes in books that really hit the right note and are so incredibly satisfying, the First Law trilogy almost never did that for me though. First time seeing the Bloody Nine emerge was about the most excited I got, and the 2nd book was an absolute snoozefest aside from the North and Dagoska.

My first Conan pastiche! Over halfway through this and it's been good up until now. Having previously read KEW's Bran Mak Morn pastiche Legion from the Shadows I would say Road of Kings has been the better written pastiche from him. Legion from the Shadows suffered from quite a bit of obvious padding (even though there was still some great stuff in there) whereas almost everything in Road of Kings so far feels important to the story and characters. Even though I haven't finished it yet I feel comfortable in recommending it for those anons who are fans of the original REH stories but haven't bothered to check out any of the pastiches yet; just so long as you keep in mind that KEW isn't REH, but he's definitely giving it his all in this book.

Rigante series was my first foray into Gemmell. And even though he spends a lot of time on family and relationship shit you do end up caring for the characters a bit more than you normally would have in a Gemmell story.

That's actually one of the things I liked most about those books. Usually I'm not one for the relationship stuff but I loved the way Gemmell handled it. Did you notice how almost every character changes drastically as the story progresses based on their life experiences? That kind of deep character development is almost unheard of in S&S/Heroic fantasy.
Pretty much liked every book I've tried that he's written except Hawk Queen. Maybe I would have liked Hawk Queen as well if I kept reading but I dropped it as soon as I realized the fem MC is the village bicycle and proud of it.
I don't think the Dominator was small time as much as he was so overpowered he never really NEEDED anything like finesse or guile which was what ultimately did him in. His magic was simply that powerful.

Because it's usually not needed or wanted; at least for S&S. S&S, at it's purist, is all about action and forward momentum (and by action I don't mean just combat and battles; I mean things happening to move the story forward). When you spend too much time on character development it can really turn the story into a slog. All that being said I still enjoyed the Rigante books even if they're not more S&S-flavored like the Drenai books. I must have read the entire series half a dozen times.

Thank you, my white friend. In fact I just finished the book and still very much recommend it for Conan fans. Even though its highs don't quite reach the same highs in KEW's other REH pastiche, Legion from the Shadows, it is by far better consistently written with very little discernible padding to stretch it out to novel length.

I'd recommend KEW's Legion from the Shadows as well even with its flaws. It has a nice grim tone of horror throughout the entire story and his prose is particularly Howardian as fuck. But you should definitely read REH's Worms of the Earth first if you haven't already since Legion from the Shadows is basically a sequel to that story.

I feel that the character interactions are very unrealistic and the sotry's pace is choppy at best. The only thing I've found interesting so far is the narrative structure and even that is losing its luster.
