The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Just went through a podcast series on the Revolution that spent a couple episodes about Napoleon's Egypt excursion.
Sell me on this book and not another more comprehensive book about Napoleon and his failed consulate / empire

Hofmann or Creighton?

I really really want to read historical non fiction but every time a try I get bored and go back to fiction
Help

It's the exact opposite for me

Nice! I love reading about the French Revolution. Why read this instesd of a comprehensive book on Napoleon? Two reasons:

1. every detail of his Egypt excursion is fascinating, guaranteeing an enjoyable read.

2. other books that touch on this campaign would not be as comprehensive.

Just trust me. I read mainly nonfiction, and of all the nonfiction I've read, only two have made my favorites list (6 books total) and this is one of them.

is this the best biography? I really want to read on Joan of Arc, but with a number of options, I'm not sure where to turn.

Hartshorne's Algebraic Geometry.

dairy desu

Does it have the bit with him walking across the Nile or the bit where he's terrified of cats?

The Divine Comedy is non-fiction.

yes, the nile debacle is there, as is him walking across the red sea and almost drowning.

I don't remember cats, but it could have been and I'm just not recalling.

Hofmann

Pernoud was a historian of the century prior and ended up falling in love with the story after being forced to write an article about the nullification trial.
She covers the entire biography (which we have more than most figures because of her trials), and also includes an appendix about topics related to the story such as her sword, depictions of her standard, her name (Jehanne to Jeanne to Joan, adding the from Arc or d'arc), theatrical depictions, ect. Also included is a list of important characters and short bios of them for reference, some maps as well. She also does a good job of balancing Jeanne the Saint, and Jeanne the historical figure. I've read other nonfiction that trys too hard to rationalize and explain anything divine about her temperament, her mission, her piety, her miracles, etc.

If you want one book on best girl, it's this. It's from the mid 80s, and when I was looking for a starting point this one was pointed out to me as the gold standard for contemporary books on her.

You took me somewhere far away now mate. How did you remember that shit was dope as fuck!

t. tool

For me, it's The Golden Bough

it's a nifty book. Have you read Godel, Escher, Bach? It reminded me quite a bit of that one, think you would like it.

Still haven't found anything that comes close (not even Bataille's own works)

Fuck off fag

I just learned a lot from it that’s useful in understanding Hebrew poetry. Understanding the Near Eastern creation myth in particular is very useful.

why are you doing this?

i was made to do this. it's the only thing i know.

Just looked it up and it seems really interesting. Thank you, my friend :)
