Is it even worth learning another language? The time seems better spent just reading more in English, when considering both learning the language and maintenance. I'm obviously american btw

Learning languages is one of the greatest things you can do with your time. Plus it's really fun and not that hard (after all, most people outside of anglo countries manage to do it, so why not you?)

ask yourself

can you give me some french ver of pic

This. One other thing that amazes me: when you learn a new language the next one becomes easier. Currently learning my fourth one, russian, and dreaming about reading russian classics without translation

Is there a German version of that pic?

Japanese is great. Even an average pornographic game's language is full of subtleties that translation would never be able to adequately transcribe, not to speak of proper literature.

>maintenance
huh?

most people outside of anglo countries HAVE to do it. its like saying most tribes in africa hunt lions, so why not you

If niggers manage to hunt lions then you must be able to do it if you want, that's the reasoning there.

but that reasoning forgets that necessity is the thing that makes niggers able to hunt lions

Yes, but necessity only enhances motivation, not capability. The point is that as long as you find motivation (the post goes that learning language is useful and fun), it should also be easy.

duolingo is just trash, you learn words at 5 times the rate with anki than you do with duolingo. Look for the fluent forever anki deck in your language and don't waste your time with the other apps.

translate these sentences into your target language once a day for about a month, takes no time at all and you're learning basic grammar

Berlitz books are a really good old fashioned series that you don't need to scour ebay for, paperbacks are easily found on amazon, and if you read another in a different linguage the story and presentation will be the same.

if you're watching a movie try mimicing a simple phrase that is uttered, rewinding and repeating for 5 to 10 minutes. increase difficulty as you feel comfortable.

motivation is the most important thing. if people in european countries only thought oh i'd like to learn english so i can read mark twain rather than translations how many do you think would know english?

Yes, that's why learning Japanese is actually easier than learning some boring European language that barely ever has porn in it.

i feel like it's easier to get laid than to learn a new language

Nah. Learning a new language is a technical task, as long as you spend a certain amount of effort in a not completely retarded way you are bound to learn it. Getting laid, however, is transcendental. You can never tell what's on the other side or how to get there until you actually get laid, and lucky are those who get laid before beginning to think about how to do it. If you have to think about it you've already lost, and nothing short of a miracle will save you. Miracles still happen, mind you, but with all the efforts in the world you aren't by any means guaranteed to get laid. Learning a language is a walk in the park compared to that.

Not to mention that Japanese pornography is way more aesthetic and sensual than an average girl.

>Getting laid, however, is transcendental.
95% of getting laid is being attractive andor confident

>Japanese pornography is way more aesthetic and sensual than an average girl
Yeah those sexy pixels make my dick go diamonds

yes it is, because you just need to get lucky to get laid. learning a language actually takes effort and requires a good work ethic over the course of a few years to become actually fluent for most people.

everyone is bound to get laid.
& everything is a miracle. it's a miracle you don't dissolve in your bath like a lump of sugar. we're accustomed to miracles and have accepted them as part of daily life.

>Not to mention that Japanese pornography is way more aesthetic and sensual than an average girl.
it's not my cup of tea

yeah, napoleon once said i'd rather have lucky generals than good ones.

>You can never tell what's on the other side or how to get there until you actually get laid, and lucky are those who get laid before beginning to think about how to do it. If you have to think about it you've already lost, and nothing short of a miracle will save you.

jesus christ dude. from one ex-virgin to a still-virgin, sex is about as beautiful and majestic and mysterious as taking a shit. it's not a life-changing and magical experience unless you're literally a troglodyte that can only appreciate superficiality rather than spiritual connection. i would give up a thousand fuck sessions over an exciting and stimulating conversation.

it's probably because you've built sex up to be this magical experience compared to the rest of life that you see it as such an insurmountable and unachievable goal, and because you believe it to be so, the prospect of sex and relationships become these things which have immense weight to you, things that carry immense stake, despite the fact that all of these stakes are self-inflicted.

i might just be projecting out of my ass since i was in the same boat, but this mindset is not productive or enriching for you, it's just draining and soul-sucking. i didn't get laid until i convinced myself that sex and relationships are pointless in chasing, and i would rather dedicate myself solely to fitness, literature, and work, with no prospects of relationships whatsoever.

when there's no expectation and little to nothing at stake, paradoxically you become much more adept at handling these subjects than if you panicked at contemplating the great weight of your actions.

it's the same mindset when you're creating a work of art, that it is not about what you produce or your status, when instead it is all about what others receive. when you consider this viewpoint, there is nothing for you to really lose.

Attached: no girls allowed.jpg (1280x1183, 413K)

I was exaggerating quite a bit, but still, it's exactly the spiritual connection that's difficult to obtain, and sex without it is no more worthwhile than a good masturbation session (that's probably rich coming from me the virgin but nevertheless). Fucking is technical, connecting to people is fucking hard, since you need to understand yourself, you need to understand, at least to some degree, another person, and then you need to construct an interface through which you can communicate and pretend at understanding each other, yet I fail at the very first task. Maybe I'm too greedy in my desires and shoot over what's considered a normal level of connection among people, I have no idea.

Can you dump the versions for other languages(German especially)

user i am also learning russian as my fifth language. reading Бecы has been extremely rewarding to me. you're gonna make it desu!

>tfw day 1 of nofap

How far into Russian are you? I would expect someone who's still learning to have great troubles with Dostoevsky.

pretty far into it lol. i use a dictionary pretty frequently but i've developed a technique for learning languages and i'm pretty much ready to dedicate my life to linguistics and literature so i can push through it. gonna eventually get a job as a professor and teach english in some other country, but for now i gotta do university lol.

Sounds cool. Good luck!

I think its pretty pointless honestly. I spent 5 years learning Japanese and 4 years learning Spanish and I hardly use either. To actually read a text in its native language and get all the nuances of it just isn't really realistic for most people, even after having learned a language for many years. There's really no point in learning a language you aren't going to use at least weekly, else you are going to forget it. Hence why Americans getting memed into languages like Russian is so stupid. They are never going to use it in daily conversation, they aren't going to immigrate to Russia, and they aren't going to learn it well enough to read high level classical literature. They will just end up regressing once they lose motivation.

i'm sorry to hear that you're a lazy chauvinist user!

>Lazy
>Self taught two languages for multiple years
huh

Neat coincidence - I'm also learning Russian and intend to read Бecы soon as the first full-blown novel in the language.

How do I decide which language to learn? I have an interest in French, Spanish, and Japanese.

I agree with the other guy that Dosto is hard to understand, read Anna K or something

Thanks, but I'm a Slav so it's significantly easier for me to read it. I did notice that Dosto is not as easy as some other writers, but I can almost always make sense of the passage as a whole, and can look up the (not numerous) words that I don't get.

Best way to learn ancient Greek? (native German)

Learn Mandarin Chinese

Not him but length of time in language learning means by itself doesn't tell me much about how good you are at those languages and effective your study methods are for learning. I've met lazy people who have been "learning" a language for six years and can't parse a Wikipedia article. I'll respond to your post here to make it look less messy.
>There's really no point in learning a language you aren't going to use at least weekly
For the most part I agree with this but I would say there are different reasons someone can want to learn a language and some of those reasons do not require an amazing facility with it. You could learn a basic bit of Latin because you enjoy philology and you like seeing where English words come from. You don't need very strong Latin to be able to get enjoyment out of it and it doesn't need to be constantly used. You could learn Greek to read philosophy and exclusively read bilingual editions of books which greatly eases reading. You might end up mostly reading the English pages until you come across a specific term or sentence that you swap over for to make sure you properly understand what's being said. This also doesn't require much practice to maintain that level of aptitude.

>Hence why Americans getting memed into languages like Russian is so stupid. They are never going to use it in daily conversation, they aren't going to immigrate to Russia, and they aren't going to learn it well enough to read high level classical literature
Why aren't they going to get to that to that level to read high level classical literature? This also ignores the plenty of other kinds of things you could read in Russian like the news, subtitles for movies, the internet.

Japanese is a very difficult language for an English speaker. French and Spanish are two of the easiest languages

Yeah no shit, it's a different language. That applies to every language, sometimes even dialects or writing systems.

No, there is evidence that learning another language decreases cognitive performance

theconversation.com/there-are-also-drawbacks-to-being-bilingual-56726

Unironically this
Japanese is the most aesthetic language
If you want a life-changing experience don't go for indoeuro-analytic-language B or C
>learning Japanese for 5 years
>not watching hentai every week without subs
>not playing eroge in original
Why did you learn it in the first place? You don't have to actually speak the language irl to be considered 'using' it

Do you have a flowchart for German?
