How did people get a new photo of him? I thought Pynchon was incredibly against being photographed.

Some magazine commissioned an artist to take a pic of a model who they think might look like Pynchon now based on his navy photograph and shoop the pic further to make it look like the imagined current year Pynchon.
There is no confirmed photograph of Pynchon outside the school and navy photographs.

It's just that famous old photo of him aged up. When you see those buck teeth it's kind of obvious why he is camera shy. You know what's weirder though is that despite this he was willing to do voice work for The Simpsons. So people have seen him and somehow no pictures of him have leaked out. I dunno how he pulls it off.

Side note, why on earth did The Simpsons do a Pynchon joke. Do they really expect their average viewer to know who he is?
