I didn't buy it. There was nothing "gradual" about it. I didn't like how his transition was handled at all because it was severely neglected. Dumbass George just had to start Anakin off as a 9 year old doofus in TPM. He should've been a teenager before he was reluctantly taken in by the jedi to better mirror Luke's training (it's like pottery) and then 2+3 should've focused on his relationship with Obi, Padme and Sheev WITH MUCH GREATER FOCUS.
