Alright, first I want to say damn this show is still the best scifi tv show we have despite how old it is (and yes I know it's already a remake).
Now I have questions: > If Cylons during season 1 and 2 had clear plans about the humans on Galactica (especially after Hera is on board), why did they kept attacking and putting the colonial fleet in enormous danger they barely survived ? I mean if they really wanted to destroy the humans they clearly could have done it easily and if they wanted to just pretend, it was very reckless of them.
> Why everyone immediatly assume ALL humans in the colonies are immediatly dead after the nukes ? Nukes don't work like that. We see a very small resistance group around Anders but it's obvious millions of humans should be in the same situation. Yet they apparently did nothing and died quietly.
> Humans have a very efficient FTL drive and clearly it's not new. Why are they limited to 12 planets ? Why the 12 colonies don't have... colonies ? The same way, Kobol seems pretty near the colonial space so why nobody rediscovered it before the war ? Are they bound by religions to never leave the 12 colonies ?
The Cylons never had a real plan they spent their entire lives fighting and backstabbing each other. The only thing they ever all agreed on was the initial attack.
They needed to cut the fleet off from help or resources. They spend the rest of the show running into proof they're not the only humans left over and over.
This I'm not really sure about. I'm not even sure about the colonies themselves. 12 planets in one system all habitable? That's some Firefly shit. lol.
One or two of the planets where giant farms that could feed billions apparently. In the fleet they had ships that could do the same for them on a small scale.
Connor Phillips
it's not the best though, it started really strong then went to complete dogshit.
Owen Bennett
Name a better scifi show
It's not said the 12 colonies are all in the same system
Colton Miller
Is there no Battlestar related TV show in preparation ? It's a great universe and now they're rebooting everything, i'm amazed Netflix hasn't announced some first war prequel or other shit.
Henry Sanders
It's some fucky 4 star system where they all orbit the same barycenter or some shit like that. It looks super cool though.
>Why are they limited to 12 planets ? Might not be a fun answer, but I think it mostly just ties in with the whole religious aspect, not necessarily of the lore or anything, but more the actual themes and atmosphere of the series.
>How do they get food ? I think they have a few ships that are capable of growing a bit of food, other than that, rationing, I remember something about them eating algae or some shit.
Tyler Baker
There was no plan outside of the initial attack. I'm pretty sure the writers made it up as they went and just dropped it.
Gavin Cooper
One could say they "LOST" it
Mason Edwards
the writers just said the cylons have a plan, they didn't, it was bullshit. the cylons just attacked the colonies and then tried to create half human half cylon children. it's pretty stupid when you think about it and the explanations in the show are really half assed and mostly just end up being literally 'god wills it'
Michael Turner
Imagine the intro sequence with "And they have a plan. Kinda."
Charles Young
>Humans have a very efficient FTL drive and clearly it's not new. Why are they limited to 12 planets ? Why the 12 colonies don't have... colonies ? The same way, Kobol seems pretty near the colonial space so why nobody rediscovered it before the war ? Are they bound by religions to never leave the 12 colonies ? As established in the game (which is officially canon) there where many colonies before the first cylon war, but they where either destroyed or abandoned to get to a more defensible position. They stuck with it for reasons that aren't stated but are likely related to hunkering down and rebuilding.
Caleb White
user no Babylon 5 is the best and in fact many of BSGs best moments are lifted directly from B5 e.g. opening a hyperspace portal in a planetary atmosphere. Watch Babylon 5. If the shite SFX are a problem please just persevere. Season 1 is worthy but boring, but after that it's an incredible rollercoaster.
Tyler Thompson
What is even is B5 about? Sell me on it,
Bentley Jones
>What is even is B5 about? Who are you? What do you want? The circle made complete. It's a coming of age story, for entire civilizations. It's the best Odd Couple remake ever done, pic related.
The new movie isn't based on Moore's show. It's supposed to be a remake of the original series. I think it's in development hell anyway.
Parker King
It's a rare but not impossible stellar form IRL pretty neat that said the sheer volume of inhabitable planets in the system seems unlikely, but given BSG's themes it is not impossible these were terraformed into their current state
I'd say midway through season 2 with the Pegasus 2 part episode is the peak and then the decline begins. It stays decent for a bit but just gets worse and worse until that shitshow of a finale
Ayden Gutierrez
I'd say the mutiny act was the last flare-up of good BSG writing, only after that does it truly go to shit
Austin Powell
Wait despite the IP being active they've got a movie remake on the shelf? With the failed attempt to make a sequel series and the success of the reboot, why?
Wyatt Howard
>given BSG's themes it is not impossible these were terraformed into their current state In the finally Adama stated that Africa alone had more biodiversity then the 12 colonies combined, so they where probably terraformed.
Logan Perry
>despite how old it is what did he actually mean by this? do zoomutts really consider the mid-2000s old? has tv (particularly sci-fi) really progressed since then that you would have expected better sci-fi programming since?
what an oddball comment
Bentley Gray
Yeah, I'd agree on that. Especially because it brings back someone of the tension that the show was missing at this point.
Anthony Hernandez
zo0mers were not even alive in 2005
Colton Jones
CGI for TV-shows has evolved drastically in terms of scope and complexity this decade in theory this should have allowed for scifi-shows of unprecedented complexity and originality
in practice this obviously hasn't happened, but it feels like there should have been a high-budget scifi series that elevated the genre to a whole new level
Julian Ward
what's your favorite score from the soundtrack Yea Forums?
>Why everyone immediatly assume ALL humans in the colonies are immediatly dead after the nukes ? After the cylons attacked simultaneously every colony, there was no contact possible with the ground, the Galactica received an automated message that implied that everybody died.
The IP isn't active. The Battlestar series from 2003 and Caprica ended. There's no other show set in Ronald D Moore's universe. Like I said, someone wanted to do a movie based on the original series but after changing directors several times it's in development hell.
>stranger things >the OA >walking dead Tons of scifi since BSG has been superior. Yes I'd say 15 years is a long time, look at the graphics in bsg and the new lion king and tell me it hasn't improved.
Jordan Miller
Wait, are you judging the quality of a show by the CGI? Really?
Camden Hughes
ultimately, BSG is at it's absolute best when, ironically for a scifi show, it is at it's most grounded what made it stand out early on was that things like food, water, maintenance, crew-conflict etc were explicitly NOT handwaved as they usually are the show is at it's worst when it delves fully into mythological and philosophical topics (with a few exceptions sure) as it clashes with those more grounded themes that actually make it stand out as a show
Zachary White
>CGI for TV-shows has evolved drastically in terms of scope and complexity this decade not really, BSG CGI is still some of the best around in the genre. It's far better than garbage ps2 tier shows like the expanse for instance
>but it feels like there should have been a high-budget scifi series that elevated the genre to a whole new leve quality programming has NEVER relied on expensive special effects, just look at the movie industry. the most expensive films are garbage generic capeshit CGI and disaster flicks that belong in the bargain bucket bin at your local walshart
Luke Evans
Is the game any good ?
David Evans
>The IP isn't active Deadlock is active, still getting new story content that's official canon.
yes
Hudson Walker
CGI is a decent part of what makes scifi good after all, I think everyone has seen enough "Forest planet not-Vancouver"
Robert White
>stranger things >the OA >walking dead >Tons of scifi since BSG has been superior. this is bait right? BSG was probably the last genuinely quality sci-fi show ever made
>es I'd say 15 years is a long time, look at the graphics in bsg and the new lion king and tell me it hasn't improved. but what could be improved about BSG if it were remade now? the CGI still looks really good and tells the story just fine. who cares if it looks a little bit sharper, that doesn't make the show better you fucking spastic
Camden Wood
you're saying this looks worse than the fucking lazy cgi deer in The Walking Dead, or the fight scene in Black Panther? Fuck off.
and yet clearly you haven't seen enough of 3 seasons of that town stranger things is set in or the prison from the walking pleb
Brayden Russell
On the Caprica tv spinoff series weren't the criminal gangsters that looked Italian and Mexican from Tauron? Why would they have a darker skin color than the average Caprican when they are closer to the sun?
If you liked battlestar you'll probably like The Expanse, I loved both.
Bentley Ross
It's the Deadlock thing ? What is it ? RTS ?
Aaron Richardson
I don't think we'll ever see a sci-fi show as good as BSG ever again. there's just not the budgets for it, and pretty much all programming now has been ruined by SJW activism
Caleb Ramirez
>CGI is a decent part of what makes scifi good Not even close.
Nah, tried the Expanse, found it too slow and boring
Kayden Harris
Then why is the original Star Trek series still superior to any of those, BSG included?
Ayden Long
CGI opens up stories, settings and locales that are simply impossible to present with practical effects And Scifi does benefit heavily from being able to represent truly otherwordly visuals and characters
Regardless of what you think about it's story, Avatar is a good example of a movie that simply could not have worked without extensive CGI and it uses said CGI properly
Jason Lopez
The Expanse is mediocre garbage. If it was made 15 years ago when we didn't have a vacuum of sci-fi shows no one would care about it, the only reason it's getting shilled is because there's barely anything else airing
Joseph Harris
atmosphere
William Cruz
it really isn't, watch it again without nostalgia goggles neither the settings, storylines nor the characters are in any way superior to BSG
Hunter Foster
>CGI opens up stories, settings and locales that are simply impossible to present with practical effects it's a show set on a spaceship breh, they didn't need much CGI aside from the space battles
Justin Russell
Why didn't they FTL a civilian ship into a Cylon ressurection ship ?
Ryan Barnes
>CGI is a decent part of what makes scifi good No, it's the characters and the stories.
I'm not saying those are good, in fact given the advances made in filming technology that it looks crappy is downright appalling I'm saying that should a show PROPERLY use modern techniques, it would be able to dethrone all other scifi series by virtue of the sheer freedom it brings
Charles Gutierrez
BSG is probably the last sci-fi show i watched where I cared about any of the characters desu
nice to know others here still listen to the soundtrack. pure unadultered kino
Logan Bennett
those are important to, but many beloved moments from BSG would have been patently impossible without proper use of technology
The whole "escape from new caprica" storyline would have been worse off if things like the adama maneuver would have been technically impossible
Asher Allen
Reminder that tricia helfer is childless
Austin Robinson
It's turned based
Civilian ships are worth more then the bullets and missiles, and it'd probably be hard to do.
Blake Morris
>nostalgia goggles I was at least 20 years from being born when Star Trek was aired >they changed Starbuck to a woman >after season 2 it became scientology in space >storylines Season long story arcs have ruined a generation of TV shows Season 1 was fantastic but you're mad if you think it's a scratch on Trek TOS.
Chase Gutierrez
> BSG with bad CGI It's called Space 2063
Lincoln Taylor
>they changed Starbuck to a woman and the character was way more interesting (until they fucked it up late season 3) than the original Starbuck and if you look back on TOS, and not just watch the truly great episodes, you'll notice a lot of it is badly acted cheesy crap
what the fuck was their problem leaving that little girl behind bros?
Connor Wright
The plan is a lie and the show went off the rails and burst into flames after new caprica started.
Joseph Morris
The loli was already broken, she was waiting for her dead daddy.
Aiden Johnson
CGI is just a tool, you can tell a compelling story without top notch CGI. Compare the practical sets of BSG (Galactica, Colonial One, Pegasus) to those from The Expanse. The sets of The Expanse look cheap because most of the money went into the CGI.
There's still good characters moment after season 3. I like Athena in particular and Baltar last line in final season was heart breaking.
Also "I don't want to be human ! I am a machine ! And I can be so much more..."
John Johnson
Should I watch the Expanse? I've seen Star Trek, TNG, Battlestar Galactica, SG1, Farscape, and probably a few others I'm forgetting.
My favorite was probably Farscape, with the Star Trek original series as my 2nd favorite.
Jonathan Price
While CGI is a tool, it is a very powerful tool that has no true alternatives especially for genres like scifi and fantasy that can truly take advantage of it and the best work is only achieved when you properly utilize all your tools I never once said that the expanse is anything but a mistake, as they only use one tool and they use it badly at that and don't forget that many memorable sequences in BSG were only possible through CGI
what I'm saying is that it should be possible to find the same level of practical effects, writing and acting as used in BSG, and THEN use the vastly improved capacities of modern CGI to enhance everything and make an even-better series
Logan Cook
Watch SG:Atlantis and Universe
James Allen
>Should I watch the Expanse? The beginning is a bit slow but it's pretty good. You should also watch The Orville
Hunter Sanchez
Any fans of the show should pick up BSG deadlock when its on steam sale again its a really good game.
Logan Bailey
>I don't want to be human Is it a bad sign if you agree with that sentiment? The idea that I'll die with so much of the universe unseen, unknown and impossible to understand is at times maddening
Aaron Smith
watch it but it's mediocre and no where near as good as the shills claim it is. the characters are all muttskins and bland as hell too. abo main character in s3 can't act
Juan Campbell
I loved Expanse and I don't think there's that many shows worth watching at all
Brandon Russell
Sure there are decent moments right up to Baltar telling Caprica 6 he knows about farming. Doesn't mean those seasons are on the whole scattershot garbage. I've seen people reaching for handholds before falling to their deaths with more deliberate planning that BSG had.
Henry Torres
writer's strike ruined a lot of promising shows didn't it?
Ryder Gray
>and don't forget that many memorable sequences in BSG were only possible through CGI I know. The battle of the Resurrection Ship was one of the best moments of television. I wish their in-house team had more time and money for the CGI once they took over from season 3 to Caprica.
watch Lost, X-Files, SGU, DS9 and then you're pretty much done with quality sci-fi programming.
Jason Kelly
I'm kinda scatterbrained right now so this explanation might be all over the place. >why wasn't Kobol rediscovered before the war The colonials' religion said if any human was to return to Kobol, the punishment would be paid with blood. Head 6 told Baltar that God turned His back on the planet for some reason, which is why punishment is so severe. What made God turn his back on the planet, it's not really said. Head 6 mentioned something about human sacrifices IIRC. It's possible a war between humans and the humanoid cylons was the cause of the harsh penalty. Plus, the humans were living fairly comfortably on the 12 colonies before the second war began. >why only 12 colonies It's mostly a reference to the 12 tribes of Israel. According to mormonism, there's supposed to be a 13th colony, which I guess is supposed to be America? I'm honestly not sure exactly. The only reason this is included is because the original creator, Glen Larson, was a mormon. However, there are other planets/planetoids controlled by the humans, mostly for resources. >Why did everyone assume all humans died immediately from the nukes. The cylons were very thorough and nuked every major city and sent in cylons to pick off stragglers. Even if humans were able to survive all of that, without any radiation meds, they would just die out. Sanders and his group were able to survive for so long because they were on a mountain, away from the radiation, and eventually got a hold of radiation meds. >Humans have a very efficient FTL Not really. According to Adama, there's a lot of error when it comes to jumping beyond a certain point in colonial space. Roslin also says the cylons' FTLs are more precise than theirs. >How do the get food? There's a few ships that can grow produce and the Galactica can process its own food. In one episode, they harvest algae for its high protein content and they stop off at planets with natural resources.
Dominic Jones
Humans have a very efficient FTL drive and clearly it's not new. Why are they limited to 12 planets ? Why the 12 colonies don't have... colonies ? The same way, Kobol seems pretty near the colonial space so why nobody rediscovered it before the war ? Are they bound by religions to never leave the 12 colonies ?
The colonies had some distant outposts, but never expanded massive new colonies. The answer, I always supposed, is the same reason we have space travel but don't have any extra-Earth colonies. Why expand beyond the existing colonies when there are so many problems to solve on the colonies? There was a lot of intercolonial war pre-Cylons and I imagine there was just never any real motivation to expand beyond the solar system.
Brody Roberts
>Rudolph thread
Jason Morales
I hate how television turned into SJW/virtue-signal shows with Whedon quips instead of good stories and characters. Everything look and sound the same.
it's not just tv unfortunately, look at the nu-trek films. indistinguishable from tentpole capeshit in every way possible
Christian Myers
god I hate how much humor has devolved into quips regardless if they would be appropriate for their characters I swear, 50 years from now people will be looking back on that crap like we do on bad slapstick
Brandon Bailey
what really scares me is that the god damn AVATAR sequels may actually stand out because scifi standards have dropped that much
Colton Ross
It means you're emo
Nathaniel Morris
doesn't it bother you in the least that you'll never know what it's like for humanity to discover extraterrestrial life or to figure out what dark matter is?
Blake Young
Why didn't they just repair the ship before the next episode?
I still can't get over the fact that JJ and his company destroyed Star Trek. Thank gods there The Orville to bring back that optimism in science fiction.
bsg turns to shit when they're on new caprica and only goes down hill from there
Ian Robinson
what a time we live in we got to see both star trek and star wars die at the same time in the hands of the same people
Evan Gutierrez
>3 episodes about exploring new planets and stuff >12 episodes about exploring bortus' homosexuality
Aiden Roberts
That's a damn long strike
Charles Price
I like the expanse but it’s not really all that amazing unless you get a hardon from the idea of spaceships having to spin around halfway through a trip to decelerate. Hopefully the show runners use their Bezos bucks budget to pay for an acting coach for Holden.
Jaxson Foster
Yeah but it's comfy. After each episode you're left with a smile, with shows like STD you just want to throw up.
And now he has a $500 million deal with Warner. I hope Bad Robot stays far away from B5.
last season would have been perfect if they just cut to black when they landed on the real earth and discovered it was a nuclear wasteland
Kayden Taylor
You're forgetting the farm they spent what felt like 10 years on too. Glad I ditched that show what a piece of shit.
Justin Baker
Lot of things are like that now. Cars are another example. Fewer companies fewer choices in most cases. All cars look the same and everything in controlled by a handful of multi national corps. Hollywood is no different (Disney etc).
Tyler Gonzalez
B5, DS9, TNG, Farscape, SG:SG1
Andrew Foster
This, was just about to list off these exact shows. Except Farscape which I refuse to watch because fuck Browder and Black for ruining the last two seasons of SG-1.
Might even be two of the worst characters in the history of tv.
Sebastian White
i have to rewatch this
Michael Peterson
Suck it up farscape is a dream and those two are great in it. Sg1 was already fucked they didn't ruin it. Any show going on 10 seasons is going to burn out.
Christian Fisher
> being this much of a brainlet
Ryder Wilson
"I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next 10 generations that some favors come with too high a price. I want to look up into your lifeless eyes and wave like this [waves at Morden]. Can you and your associates arrange that for me Mr. Morden?" >youtube.com/watch?v=S0n2vurSBIQ
that's such a stupid reason Farscape was a much better show than SG-1 and I say that while liking SG-1. Despite what people repeat for some reason the characters are so completely unlike their Farscape characters that I don't even notice them
Pretty much everything up until New Caprica was great, but it was all downhill from there. I couldn't make it through the last season, all the character drama had devolved into a soap opera and the plot seemed fucked up beyond repair. >all tension between the president and Adama is gone and they start dating instead >everyone is still paranoid about Cylon spies but Athena gets a free pass for some reason >the president's cancer gets cured by magic but comes back when the writers remember it was important to the plot >pants-on-head retarded love quadrangle and other pointless relationship drama >characters getting killed off for no reason other than their actors didn't want to be on the show anymore >none of the Cylons ever do anything seriously subversive - the first seven are all nobodies who get revealed immediately after being introduced, the final five aren't actually a threat That's just off the top of my head. The frustrating thing is that the show had so much going for it. The setting, visuals, acting (except for Boomer/Athena), music, etc. were all top notch - the writers just had no idea what they were doing.
Gabriel Cox
orville is complete garbage and you're part of the reason entertainment is becoming such garbage
Liam Sullivan
I think the colony is serviceable scifi. But pretty much everything recent is real bad
Ethan Peterson
I remember Dirk Benedict writing something about the 2003 series being shit because it was grim dark and about family disfunction unlike the original
