Well, outside of Diamond Days where they arguably would've tried waiting for White forever only for Steven to die of starvation because she wouldn't let him go back for food. That bit of anarchy Connie introduced by getting them to dance was good and then how she was basically his Samwise carrying his broken body back to his gem half. More of that sort of thing in S6 would be good.

Okay look, we all give Rebecca some salt every now and again and she usually deserves at least some, but there is no way, no goddamn way she is so terrible as a writer that she would literally write the words "It will kill all organic life on the planet", make that thing the focal threat the entire movie, and then have that thing do what it was supposed to do to kill all life, and just say 'well it got resolved in this way that couldn't work.' Hell maybe if Sugar is ballsy have him indirectly shatter someone and that just leads him to an even darker path. Just a complete breakdown then finally at the end a redemption. Well then season 6 probably won't be that good. I can't really see where they should go from here. We're at a point where they basically did solve the major threats and problems and while there is work it's not nearly to the scale that we once saw. The only real room left to go is to see Steven face a struggle within himself with his momentous position as a Diamond. Because even though he may want to go back to being a normal kid going on adventures, he has the weight of taking care of the gems on Little Homeworld, Humanity, and maintaining peace within the Empire. It would only be natural to see him ripped away from his roots and losing sight of himself. Which I guess we kinda got from the movie but not really. Honestly, even though I loved Spinel, the movie didn't really give much credence to why Steven Universe should keep going. Spinel was awesome but she wasn't threatening and we all know they faced far worse situations and came out fine. I think the only way sixth season would be entertaining is if the villain is Steven himself, and its a battle within himself that he's gotta learn to deal with.
But hey I'm just a scrub on the internet, I don't write. So I don't really know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to share my thoughts about it.

Well I don't really have a problem with it in this case because mentally (and from what I thought, physically) the happy Spinel was of the same level as Steven was when he was a kid. And Punished Spinel would be a little older so I could see older Steven and her being together as appropriate. It's just I'm not sure the CN execs would like it because it's not very kosher to have their child protagonist dating a thousands of years old gem. But you're right, gem ages are irrelevant. Amethyst is practically speaking still a teenager. Pearl seems like she's in her 40s and Garnet and Bismuth like in their late 30s. It really isn't that bad.

Not a ton of time passed between Pink leaving to Earth, and the start of the Rose identity. Pearl was basically a novice at her job still, yet Pearl knew Spinel. The whole war would be a "relatively short" time span until the Diamonds declare gemicide. The long time gap was after the war ended, corralling monsters for 1000s of years. Easily, the galaxy warp had to have been destroyed early in the war, so there was no way to warp back to Spinel. The only way back then would be to use Pink's leg ship, which would blow Rose's secret identity. Whether she ever planned to go back for Spinel is unknowable, but clearly she valued her secret identity more than she valued fetching Spinel. At best Pink was an emotional coward, and at worst she was a self centered child.

We'll never know for sure what their intent was, but like I said, if it was to be platonic they screwed up the body language and all that. When you want to go platonic you go with expressions and motions of relaxation and comfort, simple, calm smiles and eyes. Body muscles get relaxed so you don't do weird motions that last longer than usual.
When you wanna go beyond platonic you go with expressions of euphoria and ecstasy. Tension rises so your character looks attentive, almost shocked at what their body is going through when they're looking at the other subject. They want to look at all of them and feel all of them for as long as possible.
This sort of stuff is near basic when it comes to learning how to draw emotion.

She was receptive to Steven caring on an altruistic level, but even in the garden she understood he was always just a little wary around her and she wouldn't make the best friend to him, even under ideal circumstances. Because, you know, it's entirely possible she just wanted to be a friend and cheer people up.

It's cheap because they would just cycle through animations like a loop and have very minimal change happening. To make it still visually entertaining they have to have the characters bounce around in a jovial fashion to make it look nice. So they would loop that around to make they're animations. In addition these things were black in white and were quite frankly minimalist. So that's why they were cheap to make. Commercial animation has always been about reusing assets and making things as efficient and non-time consuming as possible. Like the "calarts" style is really just a product of commercial animation practices to make animation cheaper to produce. Like He-Man was also designed that way, there's only a male model and female model, all characters look the same. It's always been about maximizing profit and minimizing cost. Artistic animation is very different from that where things will frequently change at become dynamic. So the movie probably went the extra mile to make things more dynamic with Spinel. Things didn't loop (unless it was intended to because of the reference to 30s animations like when she was toying with the Crystal gems).
To be honest I really do wish one day that a rich dude just decides to make a network for artistic animation, where it isn't really intended to make profit but intended to be art, where animators can go as big and unique as they want. But for now we have to contend with what the big networks want to dish out for their target audiences to make their cash.
