I mean, I've seen ship names evolve beyond recognition in other long-running fandoms. Given that the Invader Zim ship names are so inorganic, you'd expect the second a generation of shippers faded away they'd change. The fact that they haven't suggests that there's an immortal fanbase that never ever went away.

It always seemed to me that the more inorganic a ship name seems, the longer those naming conventions stick. Just look at YuGiOh and Pokemon ship names as an example. It's 2019 and they're still using that clunky ass fillintheblankshipping format. No real reason and the ship names are always stupid looking and annoying, but no one wants to go through the tag splitting that changing the naming conventions usually causes.

TaZr isn't very specific when two characters in the series share the same initial.

The biggest problem with the Zim ship names is that a lot of characters share initials. So you end up with shit like "use a lowercase g for gir and an uppercase g for gaz" and it gets confusing fast.

I'm surprised how versatile it ended up being, honestly. I originally thought it would be a format that would be broken the more ships existed, because there's only so much you can do with a four letter format using only one letter from both names, but it actually worked out oddly well.

I think it depends on the era a show is from. Trends pop up and fall out of fashion over the course of a decade or so, and if something is rebooted, people stick to the old name out of convenience.
Eg-
star trek: “The Premise”: some weird ass term for Kirk and Spock shipping
x files: MSR: mulder and scully romance
And then more recently people have started using portmanteaus like ‘dipcifica’ or ‘deckerstar’.
There’s obviously some sort of rhyme and reason to it, I just don’t want to be the guy to find it.

I think part of the reason portmanteaus have become the more popular choice in terms of ship names has something to do with the onset of internet communities and sites that use personalized tags to sort out the content of the site. The older style of shipping names, like The Premise and MSR, get lost in the fray of modern tagging systems because they're generic enough that a large amount of posters won't recognize it and post heaps of unrelated shit in the tag. With portmanteaus, they're pretty much made up words so no tag crossing occurs.

Imo the funniest shipping shit comes out of the warrior cats fandom, which absolutely cannot use XYr or portmanteaus due to the naming conventions within the books themselves. And that’s how you get shit like “ashenXsquirrel-Psunset”, which reads like a username on a mid 2000’s forum. It tickles me pink and I can’t properly articulate why.

Once the fandom got big, the names changed to be more conventional. Pepsicola became johndave for example. I'm pretty sure 2sp00ky also became arasol or solara to prevent confusion with erisol.

It really tickles my scholarly autism how different fandoms have their own overarching personalities and how it reflects in even the smallest of shit.

That said, I wonder if the Zim ship name convention came from the X-files one that you mentioned earlier. MSR is just one letter off from these ones (and I'm assuming it stands for Mulder Scully Romance).

He also pretty much abandoned an entire fleet of Irkens who were sending a distress signal (in the present) so those guys are probably dead too. And then it explained that, I guess, since Zim is technically part robot, he can also intrude into GIR's circuitry and thoughts. It also showed that he has a huge machine that he uses to create eldritch abominations and shit. And recap kinda is hinted that Zim and Dib are stuck in a timeloop. It also slightly goes into how Zim hates sucking up to the Tallest even though he constantly does it. The lore is all over the place though.
