Everything being referenced in the event is all stuff from the Cates run leading up to it plus all the little one shots, so your best bet would be to read all of that stuff. There was sort of a loose symbiote history/origin established back in the 90s and then in the Space Knight run, but it basically got retconned recently to where it is now.

While I do think Knull is not that great of an idea and Cates is pushing him a little too hard, he makes for a pretty decent catalyst plot-wise and at least gives the symbiotes something to work with. When the best Venom run is one where it's not even the same character, host and looks-wise, you have to get pretty creative if you want to do something original with Eddie Brock and Venom and have it go more than 20 issues.

Hard to say, but I'm wondering if he really needs the codex from absolutely everybody or if he just needs a certain amount. Needless to say I'm sure they'll include some pretty deep cuts as far as people or side characters we've totally forgotten have worn a symbiote.

Brock had the Anti-Venom one and then later the Toxin one while Flash had the Venom symbiote, then Brock got Venom back from Lee Price after Flash lost it, then Flash got the Anti-Venom and became Agent Anti-Venom before he died. Not sure about Conan and Eddie.

If you're interested in the mythos stuff read Aaron's God Butcher arc in Thor and then just read Cates Venom in release order including the one shots.
A few things get brought up but you don't honestly need any other prior reading as it's pretty good at telling you what you need without spoonfeeding.
