Don't, or rather, avoid the shit that tries to explain where symbiotes came from. Venom Lethal Protector is a good start for Eddie stuff.

Not him but Knull is a stupid character and an even worse origin for the symbiotes than The Klyntar. A lot of people were happy with the vague alien goo being just that.

Everything being referenced in the event is all stuff from the Cates run leading up to it plus all the little one shots, so your best bet would be to read all of that stuff. There was sort of a loose symbiote history/origin established back in the 90s and then in the Space Knight run, but it basically got retconned recently to where it is now.
