I miss it when Woody had a bit of an edge to him. Every sequel acted like he was pure of heart and was incapable of feeling animosity towards another toy.

Well he couldn't exactly go throwing toys out windows after that. That's the kind of thing you don't get away with twice.
Woody was a very nice and beloved character before Buzz's arrival. After learning to let go and accept sharing Andy, he came back to his old self.
What I miss when he and Buzz were power bros. TS3 and 4 made Buzz a joke again and reduced his role, after him being so mature in TS2. He used to be as important as Woody. We will probably get a TS5 in ten years or something that tells a story with Buzz now that Woody is retired but still, dang.
>in ten years
Pixar's already established precedence. I expect Toy Story 5 will come out a lot sooner.
Toy Story 4 had Buzz reduced to a running gag. It's fucking sad, really
Pixar probably didn't know what to do with Buzz after 2
They announced TS4 in 2011, man
I don't expect TS5 to release any sooner than in another 8 years at minimum. And I do want them to do so. Love the shit out of these toys.
The "edge" of Woody's characterization is a leftover from an earlier script when Woody was obviously the main antagonist.

Which he still is in the final film, but much more layered and nuanced.
2 is the best in the series and probably the best animated sequel made.
iI's frustrating because Buzz is the action guy when it comes to his brand of leadership. Woody has always been good at being sort of the heart and the brains, but Buzz is inspiring and prone to bold decisions. I liked that dynamic.
Indeed, Kung Fu Panda 2 is pretty close though.
Woody at least had a bit of sarcasm in him that seemed to completely disappear after 1. There were a lot of chances for him to say something snarky to the weird cast of characters in 4 and he never did.
I'm glad he didn't, because then it would have undone the character development from the first movie for a lazy rehash. His concerns in 2 and acts in 3 were organic advancements of the progression of his character, rather than lazy returns to old issues.
And then came fucking 4.
>Woody at least had a bit of sarcasm in him that seemed to completely disappear after 1.
He had it in 2, he still snarked at Jessie and Pete all the time.
Toy Story 1 will always be my favorite movie. Toy Story 2 was a fantastic sequel. Toy Story 3 was pretty good and definitely did NOT make me cry at the end, but Buzz was gutted as a character. Toy Story 4 was below average and practically removed half the cast.
Where was Bullseye? Jessie? Why was Buzz suddenly one of the fake Buzz's from TS2? I liked the Bo Peep thing, but what I didn't like was how I felt like I was watching another franchise. That wasn't Toy Story.
>And then came fucking 4.
4 is the culmination of that character development though.
He was in full dad mode during that movie, but he had to accept that Bonnie doesn't care about him. His biggest fear was being alone after his kid outgrowed him, but he found a way to be happy without that.
TS4 is literally the best finale the character could have had.
> Woody is retired
He will be back.
Realistically, it's because Joss Whedon didn't work in TS after the first one.
This, I don't think TS4 was necessary at all and I would have preferred if Andy's toys had a bigger role but Woody's character progression made a lot of sense.
Even disregarding that reel, we certainly dodged a fucking bullet with THAT Woody.
I loved the bit in 3 where he was all "He was putting you IN THE ATTIC!"
His patience finally wore off and he was trying to tell them that, guess what? After three fucking movies maybe listen to me when I'm telling the truth.
He was a pretty huge dick towards Jessie in 2 and then to his friends after he decided to go to Japan.
Was it an asspull?
But why is it that Woody is given the privilege of leaving when he feels he has fulfilled his purpose, but the other toys were convinced they either need to stay in the attic or be given away according to what Andy wants.
Because woody has not realized he can be independent
That's the whole fucking point of the movie. His duty as a toy was always in favor of his owner. Bo showed him he can live by his own free will.
>Every sequel acted like he was pure of heart and was incapable of feeling animosity towards another toy.
Almost as if the suits were much more in charge in the sequels and wouldn't greenlight their cashcow doing anything really bad.
But with this "discovery of independence" brings along the question of, "But what a minute, in the third movie, all of Andy's Toys could've been going through their own arc of independence and could have rightfully stayed at the pre-school where they could entertain a rolling door of kids for ages to come but Woody came by and stomped on that arc for his own selfish desire of NO STAY WITH ANDY".
The difference is that by the end of the movie, Woody's "Reject your independence" ends up being the core value of the movie. The fourth movie completely fucks up Woody and makes him look like a massive hypocrite.
so for toys, being played with feels like sex for us right?
defenestration is never a reasonable option
I just want them to do a dark parody of this woody for alternate tv movie version or something where he is just a complete sociopath that gets whats coming to him at the end.

yeah but that's not what the third movie was about
Also Woody had to see Bo Peep be independent and happy, as well as wanting to stay with her, what made Woody's self-actualization possible.
Is 4 worth a watch? It's critically acclaimed but I've seen mixed feelings about it on Yea Forums
Depends
Is your level of intelligence on par with the average of Yea Forums? Because if that's the case, don't.
It's a great movie. People who think it ruins 3 are missing the point.
Fuck off and rewatch the movies. In toy Story 2 Woody still had his dickish personality to him when telling buzz to go back when they tried reaching him from wanting to go to the museum.
Yes but even an asspull can be great with execution
I havent seen it but there isnt a snowballs chance in hell that its a *bad* movie, its Pixar.... dunno about story though. woulda been happy with a trilogy instead of the mouse dragging out their corpses again
its usually more frustration than dickishness, he's the captain america of the whole gang so when buzz is acting like a fucking moron or rex is running around screaming it really doesnt help get shit done.

Watch this scene. It showcases Woody's stubbornness
Welcome to an era where every viewer is a special little snowflake who only gives a shit about their own happiness or interests. "Finding meaning in others and the greater good? Fuck that. ME ME ME ME."
>yeah but that's not what the third movie was about
The third movie was all about loyalty, what are you talking about. Otherwise, they would've never returned to Andy.
This isn't quite the same as Woody knocking Slinky off the bed because he's jealous and petty.
